Live Thread: Cavs @ Timberwolves (#Loveless)
2017-02-14Is there a sadder way to spend Valentine’s Day than without Love? Well, that’s the predicament the Cavs and their fans find themselves in tonight as they close out this year’s holiday with the knowledge that they’ll be missing Love (Kevin that is) for about six weeks as he recovers from knee surgery. The painful irony doesn’t stop there either, as the destination the Cavs will be spending this normally romantic evening is the same place that Kev called home for the first six years of his NBA career. You can bet Love would have enjoyed firing threes like Cupid’s arrows from deep in the Target Center in Minneapolis, or showing his heart and desire pulling down rebounds like so many valentines from the admirers he probably still has amongst the Minnesota faithful.
Probably the most heart-breaking thing for Kevin himself, is that he won’t be able to take part in the All Star Game this weekend, after working hard to put together his best season to date in a Cavs uniform. And, while it’s certainly a tough break for both him and the team… it’s not the end of the world (though the angsty, love-stricken teenager in all of us might be tempted to feel that way). No, the Cavs’ hearts will go on… and they’ll pick themselves up, and carry on to try and take down the young Wolves on their home court where they’ve been close to .500 this year (14-17).
Minnesota has had some misery of their own recently, having lost Zach Lavine for the year with an ACL tear, and forward Adreian Payne indefinitely to illness. Yet, despite a sub-par record, they do feature two young stars of the game in Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony Towns. Wiggins, who was spurned by the Cavs for Love to start his career, always seems to get up for the team that drafted him. He scored 23 points against the Cavs a couple weeks ago in Cleveland, and is averaging 22.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Towns is averaging 23.7 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, and also had a big showing against the Cavs with 26 points and 12 boards.
The Cavs do get some good news tonight, as Iman Shumpert returns to action, and is reportedly not on a minutes restriction for the game. This should help cover at least some of the minutes lost with Love out. In Love’s place, Channing Frye will get the start.
Cavs probable starting lineup: LeBron James, Channing Frye, Tristan Thompson, DeAndre Liggins, Kyrie Irving.
Timberwolves probable starting lineup: Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, Brandon Rush, Ricky Rubio, Gorgui Dieng.
Catch all of the heart pounding action starting at 8pm (EST) on NBATV, and write your love letters in the space below…
Prediction: Despite their lost Love, the Cavs lift their spirits and break a lot of hearts in Minnesota while pulling out a 123-118 victory.
Just gonna leave this right here….
That was a two man charge right there…
HEY I HAVE AN IDEA HOW ABOUT LIGS ON WIGS —-JUST AN IDEA
+1Billion
TT the garbageman!
Good IQ from James. Attack the rack some. Awful mechanics on his FT.
JFJ not going to stop Wig…
Bron just 3-6 from FT…
It is what it is at this point. Hopefully he shoots better in the playoffs.
Shump cold. Missed 5 in a row.
Woves are right in it. When Frye/James start to run out of gas, I think we could have an issue.
Shump cooling off…
4 on Kyrie.
AGREE WITH THE NO MORE SHUMP TRADE TALKS —-UNLESS GRIF WORKS HIS MAGIC FOR A COUSINS / LOPEZ OR PLAYER OF THAT MAGNITIUDE WHICH WE KNOW IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN –SO SHUMP STAY !!
Maybe Bron should guard Wiggins
Someone should…
If only Shump could have had a third try at the three…
Cavs down two starters. Hi hum.
Do you hum when you’re hi?
I thought the All Star Game wasn’t until Sunday… the D on both sides is wafer thin…
Von Wafer thin
Holy cow that was deep Ky!
Nice move by Rubio… too bad that’s his first bucket of the night…
LBJ pulls off a reverse layup and all I hear is Kevin McHale talking about his muscles… #ThisIsNotWhyWePlay
I super hate NBATV games… they talk so much through the action…
Shump & a deep Frye gets the lead to 11 again. Shump is 3-3 from deep.
3-5 actually… but still pretty good

Hot Frye!
SHUMP! Man… glad he’s back…
Yes. Let’s stop talking of a Shump deal. He stays.
Chicago stomping Toronto by 19 in the 3rd
Shump over pentrates. D still shoddy. Long night for James, methinks.
Remember when we worried about Wiggins’ offense and not his defense?
Such the opposite… crazy
Any possession that includes both Shump and Channing dribbling is probably a lost one…
More than two, for certain. One or none is preferred.
LBJ starts the second half with a three from his favorite spot…
DWill had three boards, and should have had four (Channing outwrestled him for one)… that’s an improvement
THE MIGHTY QUINN WITH 35 / 13 TONIGHT —-“-MY MAN MORELAND “–24 / 8
Someday they’ll call those dudes up NOMAD… maybe even before they change it to the G-League…
I thought our D improved in the 2nd, it didn’t , we gave up 31.
Do like that Cavs are winning the board war (even without Love), and have 17 assists already…
Think the Raps need more than Ibaka down 19 to the Bulls at the half. Maybe a bowling trip or team yoga class
Bulls absolutely taking it to the Raps… 58-39 at half…
For some reason, they own the Raps. If that is 2 vs 7, I’ll take Chicago. Even with the Serge deal.
Unless Bulls deal Taj or Jimmy…
Regarding Liggins. It seems he either starts or doesn’t play. There is no middle ground. Or perhaps Lue feels he knows what he has there & wants to take this chance to look at D-Will as much as he can to evaluate the 10-day.
We’ve played 8 guys + 4 min for Champ. I’d expect the rotation to expand tomorrow vs. Indy. Playing Channing 36 a night can’t continue for long. Couple games is fine.
I’m sure it’s got a lot to do with Shump coming back and them still wanting to see what they’ve got in DWill… but yeah, Lig would be helpful against the young/athletic Wolves…
Channing may be calling 911 tonight if he plays 36 minutes !
Channing certainly making the most of his start with 14 and 9…
Wow… Cavs scored 43 points in the second…
” DEEP FRY ” HAS ANSWERED THE BELL VERY WELL—-ALMOST A DOUBLE / DOUBLE THE 1ST HALF
He sure looked gassed, and asked Allie what was the altitude in Minneapolis. Played solid but already more minutes than in most games. Frye needs to borrow James nitrogen or whatever chamber
I MEAN WEREN’T WE ALL RAVING / POSTING ABOUT LIGS STAT LINE THE LAST GAME —DOES TY HAVE THAT SHORT OF A MEMORY SPAN —-HE CAN GAURD ABOUT 3-4 DIFFERENT WOLVES PLAYERS —THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT GET ME UPSET WITH TY —AND WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE ARE YOU SENDING TO LIGS —TRYING NOT TO BE NEGATIVE BUT IT IS B.S. !!
It’s probably got more to do with Shump being back and wanting to see more of DWill…
Agree 100%. Lue likes guys that can shoot. He doesn’t really value D as much as some other coaches. Still, Korver & Shump have played pretty well. Hopefully Liggins gets some run in the 2nd half.

Deep Fryer for 3 at the horn. Frye with 14-9 at half.
Relax on the minutes police. We’ve got a week off after the next one. Though I am kind of disappointed we couldn’t push this to 10+ at half. We were on the verge there. Love a stop here. 4 in double figures (James, TT, Frye, Ky). Up 25-20 on the glass.
Still a great run to end the half… 8 point lead isn’t bad given how porous the D was…
FRYE time!
That’s a lot of points for a half…
If you bet on this game, you should have taken the over
Wondering if my prediction was too conservative…

Wiggins with 18. Lead down to 2 from 9. Hammer down.
Not missing dunks tonight !!
LIGS “TOOTHACHE ” MUST BE ACTING UP AGAIN —CMON TY HE DESERVES SOME MINU TES
Agree 1000000000000%
Lue is nuts not giving Ligs minutes after the way he has played
I honestly can not remember the last time we held a team below 50 for a half.
I’m with you and I hope it changes come March.
The King… throwing the hammer down!

Dunk fest.
Oh my! Hammer down!
Wow! That alley oop was pretty!
Corner Kraken!
Some really good movement from the O this game. TT FTs
Enchilada with a couple boards already…
KAT with a good pass falling down. Still up 6.
YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW THIS BUT LEBRON IS FAST !!!
Hit those FT’s please!
As Chief of the Minutes Police, it is my duty to report that LBJ is at 17 right now, meaning he is already more than halfway to the suggested 32-34 minutes with over 2 to play in the first half.
Excuse me, 3 minutes to play. If he plays the rest of the 2nd, he’ll only have 12 minutes left for the game.
With the all Star break coming up I guess he will not be cutting down those minutes.
KAT moved his pivot foot about three times on that possession…
Kyrie needs to shoot that. Everytime we get up 5 or so, we screw up a couple times.
UNCLE DREW… Feeling it!
Too many passes.
Let’s see that again… right through Wiggins wickets…

And that’s why you weren’t in the letter kid… ;)
JUST GOT HOME FROM DOING MY VALETINES DUTY —-LOVE THE ENERGY OF ENCHILADA ( LEBRON ACTUALLY MUSSED HIM ON THE RIGHT FOR AN ALLEY OOP _ AND DON’T THINK WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HIM BEING ACTIVE ON THE BD’S -LOOKS VERY ACTIVE TONIGHT )——SAW A SIGN AT THE RESTAURNAT FOR COLS –” 24 HRS IN A DAY —-24 BEERS IN A CASE —-COINCIDENCE ? “
Never too old…

Up 5 with Kyrie & James 5-14. I’ll take that.
