Playoff Live Thread: Cavs vs. Raptors, Game 1 (#TimeToWakeUp)
2017-05-01[Yawn…] …is it the second round yet? Seems like the Cavs have been off and resting for a month now. It’s actually been eight days, but that’s technically more time off then they’ve had collectively since October. They had similar downtime for the All Star Break, although both LeBron and Kyrie were working that weekend. Given how much this team was in need of some extra time to rest, recuperate and actually have a practice or three together, you’d have to believe the extended break was a positive development for the Cavs (especially given the number of vets they number on the north side of 30, not to mention Kyrie’s achy knee).
They may need all of that rest for the road ahead as well. Even though they swept their way through the first round against the Pacers, the games were all fairly close. And, their round two opponent is (on paper anyway) an improved version of the team they faced in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals. The only team, by the way, to take a game off of them before the Finals. This is not to sound the alarm, however. The Raptors earned a few days of rest themselves by finally dispatching the upstart Milwaukee Bucks in six games instead of seven. Maybe even time enough to help Kyle Lowry get his wrist healthy. Yet, though they’ve added Serge Ibaka and PJ Tucker to help with their scoring punch and defense respectively, they’ll still need transcendent games from their two All-Stars and some luck to even extend this series as far as last year’s.
Both teams struggled with holding leads against their first round foes… the Cavs due to defensive holes and the Raps due to stretches of stagnant offense. The Cavs averaged a franchise post-season record 112.5 points per game against Indiana, but gave up almost 109 points per game on the other end. Toronto’s series against the Bucks was much lower scoring, with the Raps averaging barely more points (93.8) than they allowed (93.2). So, the real difference in this series is likely to come down to whether or not the Cavs can elevate their defense, or the Raptors can get their offense going. Which is why the key matchup might actually be between shooting guards J.R. Smith and DeMar DeRozan.
As far as Game 1 goes, though, Toronto typically has a hard time winning them. The Raps are just 1-11 in series openers in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Cavs are 15-1 at home in the playoffs since 2015 (the only loss coming to the Bulls in Game 1 of the Conference Semi-Finals that year). As long as the Cavs don’t decide to sleepwalk through this first game, the odds are significantly in their favor.
Probable starters: Cavs: LeBron James, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, J.R. Smith, Kyrie Irving. Raptors: DeMarre Carroll, Serge Ibaka, Jonas Valanciunas, DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry.
Prediction: The Cavs answer the bell, stay woke and run away with a 115-105 Game 1 victory.

Is RJ hurt or out of the rotation or being preserved for the Finals?
Odd Man out.
Raps D looks worse than Cavs D tbh…
An 18-point lead down to 5 back to 14 at the half. Toronto is inconsistent, and the Cavs play down to their opposition. Should make for some big swings from quarter to quarter and game to game.
Nice finish to the half. No RJ. Went with nine.
Would have gotten this wrong. Hi scorer: Kyrie. Most assists: Kyrie. Not what I thought I saw.
Ibaka kept raptors in game without him raps down by 20 at least
By design though
Totally agree and I love the traps…force other guys to beat them
Raps really playing sloppy…as they often do…
Despite putrid shooting cavs scored 32 in that qtr
Lead back to 14… great close to the half!
Great D leads to run out!
Korver is johnny on the spot
Haha that block of irving’s layup was his best pass of the game
Great recognition by Love of Toronto’s early offense pass to JV.
Kevin Love has been awesome on both ends of the court. First half mvp.
Block three!!
La Flama Passa!
Great pass, Kyle!
I don’t think I’ve seen LeBron get stuffed that many times at the rim recently…
Love an animal on the D boards.
Kevin hitting the glass hard!
Ky-jacking. Lead down to five. Time to start attacking. Bron in transition. Love on the post after a switch.
Ky-jacking… Nice ;)
The Cavs need to stop forcing 3’s and just let them come to you.
Cavs offense is hard to watch no one is driving to basket
I know LeBron uses game 1 as a feel out game, but I’m hoping he’s more aggressive in the second half. Not really trying to score
Kyrie Irving just pissing me off. Man does he take bad shots.
Can copy and paste this comment from half the games every season…
I know. Never moving him though. He’s a total bargain right now.
Sit Kyrie and bron in Deron.
TT arriving to set a pick is like WTF? when Kyrie passes him the ball.
DeRozan still can’t hit threes…
Cavs a victim of their bad offense right now not their defense
JV on floor should have been a travel…
Lowry grabbing Kyrie’s jersey on every pick and roll…
Yeah Irving is kind of half engaged. Letting Lowry out physical him on both ends of floor.
Jab step three is not your friend Kyrie!
3 dumb threes… WTF
Two stupid shots in a row. Just move the ball.
That was annoying… JR almost rips the steal, but leads to an Ibaka three…
Safe to say that LBJ’s three is rusty…
Nice post moves by Love.
Love rolling on offense this half.
I love KLove hooks…
Nice shots grom JR & Love. Much needed.
Surprised only 2 comments
Way more than that…
Refresh your page…
I just did haha
Can’t complain about Cavs missing open threes. Bench needs to keep taking them.
Ball movement has died.
Too many threes lol
Sweet stroke from klove
Timely KLOVE BOMB!
Timely JR SWISH!

How do they have a 19-3 run with LeBron on the floor?
Shooting differential+energy lull.
Kevin! Foul him a second time there! They don’t call two!
Terrible call… travel by Lowry
Time for Love & Ky. Too many 3s.
I pretty much ALWAYS feel like Lue waits one possession too long to take the “Stop the bleeding” timeout.
Ky and Love back…
Too many threes…
Time for some points in the paint
Deron Williams missing shots he was hitting last round.
They keep mentioning the 16 point margin of victory we had vs pacers that tied golden state’s 16 point margin in a series in ’75. Didn’t the warriors win the title that same year?
Yeah, that was the Finals…
2 pointers exist fellas.
Missed threes for Cavs and Raps scoring in transition…
Cavs hunting threes too much
Gotta do a better job on Ibaka…
The switching D giving him open long twos. Not sure there is a counter for that.
I wondered how long it would take for TNT to put up the “fewest points margin in sweep” graphic… smh
We stopped attacking. 3 straight 3pt misses. Lead from 18 to 10. Decent looks. Lets get some layups.
Great looks for Korver and Frye. Misses leading to transition 3s for Toronto
Bad shot from LeBron. No need to get baited into an off rythm three. Pass it or attack.
A couple too open threes.
This is the group Cavs should be driving and kicking on…
Raptors starting to make threes…
I didn’t love that three try from LBJ…
