Live Thread: Pelicans @ Cavs
2023-01-16Good afternoon CtB!
The Cavs welcome the New Orleans Pelicans to the shores of Lake Erie for a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day matinee performance between two of the elite teams in the NBA. The one downside to this premiere matchup is the fact that Herbert Jones, Zion Williamson, and Brandon Ingram will all be out with injury, so it will be the CJ McCollum and Larry Nance, Jr. show. In spite of those absences, the Cavs would be sorely mistaken to take these hospital Pels lightly.
What will the Pelicans try to do today? They like to push the pace, move the ball on offense, and crash the glass. That’s how they’ve ended up 6th in the NBA in offensive efficiency. The Cavs defense will have to control the pace, force turnovers, and box out in order to have any chance at a win.
Tip off is scheduled for 3:00PM Eastern time and will be broadcasted live on Bally Sports Ohio/Great Lakes, Go Cavs
MLK DAY BOOK RECOMMENDATION
Read his words, what he said and wrote. What stands out about the words of Dr. King was his consistently clear vision of what it means to be a good person, and how that clarity informed his political beliefs and action. R.I.P. Dr. King.
Just no on Beasley.

Koby has done a great job of bringing in coaches and players of high character. I can’t believe they’d even think of bringing this guy into the fold.
I doubt they would unless he’s completely turned his life around, but I imagine it would take a lot of background info.
I am all for 2nd chances, but I am a no for in the court stuff AND now off the court as well.
I’d rather keep Caris, develop Diakite, hope Wade/Stevens get better, scour the G-league, make a good draft pick in the 2nd (or try & trade up), and/or see what we can get on the MLE next year, than get Beasley.
agree, agree, agree.
Character is key to this team.
Can someone explain the upside of trading Caris for Utah’ s Beasley? A lot of chatter. They shoot the same from 3, Caris is taller and a better defender…. I totally don’t get it
Beasley has better career numbers (38% to Caris’ 33%) and takes 4 more a game. That is the upside.
I don’t get it either.
I’d do Cedi + Windler, though.
Give me Cedi all day over Levert. Half as expensive and doesn’t need the ball. He’s a worse creator in the half court but we have plenty of that. And he’s a more natural wing.
don’t forget D
Beasley is down and Caris is up to 35% this season. I guess that’s what I was looking at.
NOT GOOD NEWS ABOUT SPIDA—-WOULD SIT HIM AGAINST THE GRIZ—–THEY ARE THE HOTTEST TEAM// NBA // 10 STRAIGHT WINS// PROBABLY BE A LOSS ANYWAYS—GET HIM HEALTHY FOR THE NEXT GAMES—I MAY EVEN DECIDE TO REST KLOVE —-GIVE LLAMA// 3-A-KITE SOME MIN’S // EXPOSURE
Kev played pretty well those two games he had to start and has been crap since.

Need to preface this post by saying I love 45 and would do the trade again in a heartbeat. THAT SAID… seeing the play in the 4th Q last night with Mitchell out was such a welcome throwback to the team play of last year. Ball movement was great. Guys seemed in synch. Everyone was scoring, assisting, defending, having fun. Defense was seamless. It confirmed my sense that the Garland and Okoro regressions, Mobley stagnation and unsteady Caris integration can all be largely attributed to last year’s guys trying to figure out how to integrate Donovan into what was a… Read more »
good point. it does take a long time to get the parts working together.
The big difference is the chemistry between Allen/Mobley and Garland. Garland is so good at positioning himself to score on a floater or make an easy lob to the bigs. Every trip down the floor is basically an either/or decision and Garland has complete control. Mitchell adds a complicated element to that equation when they’re all sharing the floor. I agree, once they figure out how to incorporate all of the elements fluidly, the sky is the limit for the offense.
Allen was getting ignored a ton early this year. That has been happening a lot less lately.
Good post. Agree on 90%.
I don’t think Mobley has stagnated, he’s better. Look at the FG% and rebounding. And willingness to shoot in crunch time. And he’s efficient in crunch time. Okoro hasn’t regressed, either. He started off terribly, but he’s been trending upwards for a while now. It was not just a last night thing.
I will say I think does better as a starter. Coning off the bench is hard.
Garland feeling is real self at home. Nice work by Caris in the first half and Rubio in the second. Good win!
Let’s keep this group and give the Rubio Effect some time to work.
Wise words, Charlie E!
Caris was -14
DG’s home/road splits are huge.
I second that emotion.
Watching the end of the game on replay. Cavs really struggled against the full court press. Not sure why JB didn’t put in another ball handler to help out Garland?
IAM A ” NO ” ON THE RUMORED TRADE —CAVS GET BEASLEY FROM THE JAZZ—-JAZZ GET COLLINS FROM THE HAWKS—HAWKS GET CARIS——-I WILL TRADE CARIS —POSSIBLY —FOR COLLINS STRAIGHT UP
I would also vote no. Beasley is badically a smaller version of Hardaway. Shoots more 3s than Caris. Has a higher career %, but about the same this year. 3 & D guy who does not create much. Not sure he is a better defender than Caris, but he is a guard. Not a SF. I want a 6’7″, 6’8″, 6’9″ guy back, not 6’4″.
Beasley is a huge volume three shooter. One of the highest per minute in the league. I would take him for that alone. Of course, a 6’7” or 6’8” wing would be preferable, unfortunately not seeing any out there who are realistically obtainable by the Cavs.
shooting a lot at a low percentage is NOT a plus
He’s a 38% career 3 shooter on 9 attempts per 36 min. That is great shooting!
This year: 35.5% on 8.6 per game.
LeVert is 35.3% on 4.1 per.
He’d probably get more open looks with the Cavs.
who makes up those trades? this is dumb AF
Im really encouraged by Okoro’s and Mobley’s upward trend. There have been times when JB was questioned for playing them as much as he does, when they were struggling. Those struggles and the learning that comes with it are already paying dividends and will truly pay off in the playoffs this year and moving forward. We’re not contenders, but we sure as hell can scare the shit out of the top of the east. Gotta have a long view. We’re only going to rise as high as the young kids play. Spida can win a game, but he can’t win… Read more »
The way we become contenders is for Mobley & Okoro to level up. Garland, too, but he’s already taken a leap up. Mitchell & Allen can improve around the edges.
I love Cedi & the Llama, and they can help us win games presently. But they likely are what they are at this point. Any marginal improvement does not alter our franchise ceiling. But if Okoro turns into a passable 3PT shooter and Mobley isxa threat on O? Lookout.
I’ve been thinking, I think our pace blunts Mobley’s impact somewhat. He has a hard time leveraging his height in half court possessions. But when he can get the ball on the move on cuts or in transition he’s almost unstoppable.
Go Cavs!!!
cRaps beat the Knicks. Cavs now have a 3 game lead on Knicks. Now we need the Clips to beat the 76ers tomorrow, so we can climb back to 4th place.
bummer the 76’ers won last night. if Russ would have gave LeBron the ball on the last possession, …
LET’S NOT FORGET ABOUT LEVERT WHO SINGLEHADILY KEPT THE GAME CLOSE END OF 1ST BEGINNING OF 2ND QTR —–ONLY PLAYED 15 MIN’S// SHOULD HAVE HAD MORE ———IS NETO EVER GOING TO SEE THE FLOOR AGAIN ——STILL THINK THERE IS MIN’S FOR HIM TO GO BE A ” 2-3 MIN PIT BULL ” AGAINST TEAMS
POSTED DURING THE GAME—-MY FEELINGS WITH KLOVE // WITH HIS PAST ANXIETY ISSUES—HIS RECENT PLAY IS MORE MENTAL// EMOTIONAL THAN PHYSICAL// ALTHOUGH I AM SURE THAT THUMB ISN’T HELPING HIM EITHER —–BUT RIGHT NOW // WITH HIS PLAY // HE IS ALMOST UNPLAYABLE AT TIMES// HURRY BACK DWADE OR THINK ABOUT 3-A-KITE OR ‘ELDER ‘ MOBLEY// LLAMA
AC SAID IT BEST —-RICKY ” CALMS ” THIS OFFENSE DOWN// DIRECTS THE TEAM TO ACTUALLY RUN A PLAY ———YEP AGREE JASON—-JAZZZ WITHOUT ALOT OF KEY PLAYERS BUT CAVS NEEDED THIS WIN // WE WILL TAKE IT
Missed it. But a needed win. Still, no Zion or I gram at home, we should win.
Is Mitchell still looking under the weather? Love still cannot hit a shot? What else?
Is the population of Okoro Island increasing?
NBA SCHEDULING—WTF —HOME FOR 1 GAME AND THEN BACK ON THE ROAD —JUST CRAZY !!!
BELIEVE IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WCC POSTING ABOUT ICE ONLY BEING 21 AND HAS STEADILY BEEN MAKING PROGRESS —–MIGHT BE TOO EARLY TO GIVE UP ON HIM—-AGREED——THAT LATE CORNER 3 WAS A CONFIDENCE SHOT AND HUGE AT THAT TIME —-HOPE HE CAN KEEP IMPROVING AND STAY CONSISTENT !!
WOW AFTER DEPARTING BEFORE HALF—OUT OF FRUSTATION —TO THROW THE BALL AROUND TO GRANDKIDS AND ALSO TO THROW SOME “F” BOMBS OUT DELIVERED AT THE CAVS 1ST HALF PLAY —-GRANDKIDS AND I “RELISHED ” WATCHING THE CAVS COMEBACK—” MAKING MEMORIES AND MAKING YOUNG CAVS FANS ” —-” MORE BEER … AND GATORADE PLEASE “
Rough stretch of games to finish the week: at Memphis, vs Golden State, vs Bucks
Knicks and CRaptors going to OT. Actually rooting for the cRaptors, to push our lead by 3 games ahead of the Knicks.
When we decided to play hard they couldn’t stop us
Missed most of the 2nd half. Will have to go back and watch it.
Was at work, and couldn’t watch most of this one, but good win.
Put the stake in, DG…
Yup
Dumb
I counted JV’s time in the paint on the replay. It was basically 4 seconds.
Rubio is so damn good. Everything’s better when he’s on the court
DG BALLING
Another bullshit jump back three
man our defense without kevin love on the floor is so much better .
llama >>> love
100%. If he’s not hitting 3’s he’s a liability
Good things happen when you play hard
The Llama steals one
Finally broke the wall, tie game!
LOL. That foul on Nance was a gift. Love just fell over his walker.
Fortune favors the bold… or the old
hahah well do ne
Nice pass LeVert.
We’ve reverted back to refball.
RICKY
Garland cooking.
That was a terrible call.
Haha, take what we can get
DG again. Maybe something’s brewing
ridiculous move garland
JFC. Just some dumbass turnovers.
Valanciunas looks like the henchman from a western.
Feel like the Cavs could use some Neto Minutes in the early fourth.
WCC CAVS HOPING AND AGREEING WITH YOU ON ICE ——-KLOVE’S —– WE ALL KNOW HIS “ANXIETY ISSUES “—–MIGHT BE PLAYING INTO HIS TERRIBLE PLAY OF LATE —–JUST MY OPINION—-HE NEEDS A PHYSICAL –BUT MORE IMPORTANT–MENTAL BREAK
That’s a really interesting thought. KLove definitely seems in his head. He’s too damn good to be playing the way he is.
DG sweet finish
Agreed.
mccullum looks on now
Because we’re switching DG on to him
Garland struggling.
so afraid for loves inevitable return
Lol. Big V just pushed Allen OOB.
great cut, ice
Okoro holds CJ to 2/9. His offense is improving, good finisher, great finisher on the break and his stroke from three looks great. I think the team’s patience with him is going to pay off.
Still only 21.
Considering how poorly we played, down three is really all we could hope for.
Did Garland McCollum was a lefty?
garland starting to look like trae on defense
Only down 3.
Spida!!!
Wow. Athletic finish, Allen.
Another 4 point miss.
Valanciunas is a big baby!
Okoro not a movement shooter yet, but his form really imroving.
Put Alvarado on his ass!
wrf is garland doing on defense – he like jumps out past alvarado all the time its crazy
Officiating is abysmal
If the Pelicans had their full lineup they be crushing us
lamar and ice amping the defense intensity
Ugly game.
Sloppy
ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT
You kidding me? That’s terrible.
how?
Glad Ice caught himself.
