Live Thread: Cavs @ Thunder (#LikeIts2011)
2017-02-09In case you maybe missed it… the Cavaliers added a player this morning to fill the 15th spot on their active roster. The identity of this new player should bring back fond memories of the days leading up to the 2011 NBA Draft… and the heated debate (at least in some corners) over who former GM Chris Grant and the team should choose with the number one overall pick that year. It was an important decision to get right, since this player would very likely be the new face of the franchise to replace the departed LeBron James. In the end, the Cavs went for the Duke freshman point guard with the sick handles, Kyrie Irving, over the Arizona sophomore forward with the slash to the rim game, Derrick Williams. In hindsight, it was possibly the best decision Chris Grant ever made on a draft pick, as Kyrie has gone on to become an All-Star and helped lead the Cavs to their first championship… while Williams has suited up for four teams in the last five years, and has been unable to fully realize his potential.
Though they passed on Williams in 2011, he might just fit the bill for what the Cavs need in 2017… especially on the second night of a back-to-back where the team might have limited bodies in action against the Thunder in Oklahoma City. Granted, it’s just a 10-day deal, but given Lue’s rededication to trimming LBJ’s minutes as the season wears on, Williams should have a prime opportunity to eat up some time backing up the King while also reducing Richard Jefferson’s workload. He played just 25 games this season with the Miami Heat, averaging 5.9 ppg and 2.9 rpg in just 15 mpg, and had fallen out of their rotation in recent weeks before being waived last week. The Cavs probably hope he can recapture a bit of the success he had coming off the bench for the Knicks last season when he averaged 9.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg in 17 mpg, shooting a career high 45%.
Despite Coach Lue indicating last night that he was thinking about resting his big three of LeBron, Kyrie and Kevin… it sounds like everyone will play in tonight’s nationally televised tilt with the Thunder on TNT…
Per Coach Lue, everyone's playing tonight in OKC. Guys are on a good roll and want to keep it going.

It also sounds like Williams will be with the team and will be ready to go…
Derrick Williams is here and playing for the Cavs tonight. He'll wear 32 tonight, and then switch to 3, I'm told

I don’t care what number he rocks… mainly because I can’t wait to start using his nickname (one of the best I’ve seen)… The Whole Enchilada from La Mirada.
With Williams in the fold (at least for the next 10 days), the Cavs now have three of the top four picks from the 2011 draft on their roster (Tristan Thompson was #4 that year in case you forgot). Even the third overall pick (Enes Kanter) should be in the building, although not on the floor as he’s still recovering from a broken arm suffered in a fight with a folding chair. Three other members of that draft class will also be represented with Iman Shumpert, DeAndre Liggins and Kyle Singler. It remains to be seen if Shump will suit up with his ankle sprain. If he doesn’t, then Lig will likely take his place again in the starting lineup at SG.
While it might be a surprise that the Cavs aren’t going to rest the big three, it’s not a surprise that they want to keep their win streak rolling (they haven’t swept a road trip of four or more games since December of 1994 according to Elias Sports Bureau). In an odd twist on the Thunder side of things, they actually have to resist the urge to look past the visiting NBA Champions, since they will host their former teammate, Kevin Durant, and the runner up Golden State Warriors on Saturday night.
It should be another fun one, as both teams can light up the scoreboard and stuff the stat sheet, and the Thunder (if they can keep their minds off of KD’s return) should be looking for a bit of revenge after getting blown out in Cleveland a week ago.
Prediction: In honor of the draft class of 2011… Cavs sweep the roadie 120-111.
Catch all the action on TNT (twice in one week!) at 8pm EST (5pm PST).
Payne… His Air-ness
Bron is clearly tired…
Absolutely a travel by Oladipo there…
This will be a tough win, but OKC isnt a good enough team to give me any pause for concern
Billy Donovan calling the timeout Cleveland needed. Good job, Billy.
Eddie Munster… earning his pay
Someone explain to me the need for Orange Julius to jack up a three when guys like Korver and Frye are on the court?
Abrinas has very stupid facial hair
Nothing like airballing a layup Payne…
WITH SOME QUALITY REPS IN PRACTICE– BELIEVE “ENCHILADA ” CAN GIVE US SOME POSITIVE MINUTES / ENERGY OFF THE BENCH—–
Korver doing the old Dunleavy play… but successfully!
Korver… Gunning

Well, down 4. We lost the 3rd. Closed a little at the end. Gonna have to grit this one out. D-up. Hit the glass. Execute.
Irving, Korver, James, Love + 1 to finish it. TT I’d assume. RJ with a lot of rest today.
That Johnny Depp cologne commercial. Just wow.
I wanna punch the guy from that DQ commercial in the face
Not as bad as the Sprint guy tho…
They should be made to fight to the death.
DWill has played pretty good for a guy who just showed up today with no practice… Unfortunately, one of the reasons to have him is to help cut down LBJ’s minutes… yet he’s only been out there when LBJ is on the court too…
Not just. They played him sans lebron at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters
10-4 OR edge for OKC.

Great pass from The Enchilada… terrible shot by Frye…
And Frye’s misses have been mostly bricks
Adams eating TT’s lunch…
If we lose this, Lue will be more convinced to rest these guys next time.
What are you, the minutes police?
… Sorry. Channeling my inner Lue and lashing out like you’re Joe Vardon.

That 10 minutes Reggie and CWebb spent ignoring Russ vs KI to talk Oak vs Dolan? Pure television gold.
Korver… yet to take a shot…
ESPN Stats: James with 1552 career dunks and just 56 missed dunks, Just three times has he missed two dunks in one game entering tonight
I hope Thunder fans give KD the LeBron treatment on his return… i can hear the chants of : “O” “K” Hates” You”! ….”O” “K” “Hates” “You”!
OKC hates everyone. It is Oklahoma.
Why do they have a team in Oklahomastan? Oh yeah they stole it from seattle
Still no DR to complete the stop.
KLove with double double…

This game is getting away from us. Russ is killing Kyrie. For all his struggles on O, McRae played some decent D on Russ.
I think Russ was just missing honestly…
TT is the Cavs best perimeter defender right now
JR, Shump, & Lig out hurts the D.
Adams giving us fits on the glass.
Just a brute
Williams getting a lot of run.
He’s looked rougher this half…
Three fouls on Kyrie now…
Not sure why he’s guarding Russ?
It’s that, kay, or mcCrap
That was a lousy offensive interference call
McRae has struggled some in this quarter.
Understatement alert…
Can’t let Morrow get going…
Love just owned the French guy that drive…
McRae is awful
D-Will playing some 3 with Love & TT in.
The Mamba really is awful tonight.
Orange Julius airball…
Out of sorts on O. As Kyrie nails a 3. 10 pts in 6 minutes.
Reggie and Co continue using the network as their soapbox. There’s a game going on guys.
Irving has 0 fear. 0.
Kyrie!
https://twitter.com/cavs/status/829884173473046528
McRae is useless if he’s not hitting shots…
King Kong wouldn’t have missed that dunk, King James! LeBron and Charles Oakley are going to go see that movie together and share a popcorn
The Oakley Exit… opposite of the Irish Exit…
Reggie Webber Marv is my least favorite broadcast trio
Mine is Hubie Brown and anyone…
We scored after each of the misses. McRae got 3 instead of 2.
James with a great rejection.
I think you might be on a delay Jason… are you watching on line?
Wonder when the last time James missed two dunks in a game?
Wow… second missed dunk of the game for LBJ…
Get that weak stuff outta here Roberson!
3 on Russ. Awful pass from Kyrie there.
You can’t just let Sabonis go coast to coast like that…
Oh, man, Kyrie. That pass was beyond lazy.
That KG portion of TNT Halftime show needs to be reexamined. I’m watching it and I just want to yell “Cut!” and go give KG a hug or something. He looks so uncomfortable. Like LeBron-at-Phil Jackson’s-birthday-party uncomfortable…
That’s funny.
That segment sure needs some work. Pretty awful
TT just threw that one in…
OKC is playing us like GSW does. Stick to the shooters. Don’t 2xteam in the post. Make James & Kyrie go iso.
O.K. WE CUT DOWN OUR T.O’S IN THE 2ND QTR (BRING CAMERON “KORVER ” PAYNE BACK TO EARTH—-KEEP WEST SOMEWHAT UNDER CONTROL / TRANS BASKETS —-AND ” REHEAT KORVER “–LIKE OUR CHANCES —WANT TO SEE MORE OF THE ” ENCHILADA ” ( NEVER COULD SPELL THAT WORD UNTIL TONIGHT—THANK YOU EVIL )
LeBron. Better shooting threes than Durant this year. Have I mentioned that?
Yeah… but you can’t again…
Cavs caught up on the boards that quarter… and improved at the line…
I have to go drink beers. I hope they win!!
Reggie Miller actually said in the pregame that Billy Donovan is probably happy the Big Three are playing. Why? Because then Donovan knows better how to prepare for the game according to genius Miller
Reggie + Chris + Marv (Bite me) Albert. The stooooopid makes my head hurt. It took them 3 minutes to figure out McRae started instead of Durant. I’m sure a producer yelled it in their ears.
When I switched the game on late in the 1st, this commentary team failed to mention what was happening on the court for a full 5 minutes. They do seem to love their positions and their voices over the game itself.
In honor of all the jump balls tonight… This is poor-quality video, but it’s the opening tip from Michigan State-Notre Dame in the 1979 NCAA tournament. Magic is the middle man in this sequence.

Meanwhile, Russ has 10/9/8 already, so seems like a safe bet he will trip/doub again…
Darn, That would have been cool if it would have counted. Still, I’ll take it after the sluggish start. McRae & Felder have played well enough. D-Will as well. Kyrie & James warming. Love a tad as well after missing his first five.
Everyone who is available has played save for JFJ.
Felder got pwned by Payne.
Everyone got owned by Payne. Stop the hate.
No. It was mainly Felder
Tristan looked a bit tired banging with Adams.
He looked a bit short to me…
28-14 run to end the half… Cavs score 36 in the second…
Cavs lead at half by two… and Threezus hasn’t even taken a shot yet…
And OKC was going all out. Cavs spent a good chunk of time in chill mode.
