Live Thread: Cavs @ Timberwolves (#Loveless)
2017-02-14Is there a sadder way to spend Valentine’s Day than without Love? Well, that’s the predicament the Cavs and their fans find themselves in tonight as they close out this year’s holiday with the knowledge that they’ll be missing Love (Kevin that is) for about six weeks as he recovers from knee surgery. The painful irony doesn’t stop there either, as the destination the Cavs will be spending this normally romantic evening is the same place that Kev called home for the first six years of his NBA career. You can bet Love would have enjoyed firing threes like Cupid’s arrows from deep in the Target Center in Minneapolis, or showing his heart and desire pulling down rebounds like so many valentines from the admirers he probably still has amongst the Minnesota faithful.
Probably the most heart-breaking thing for Kevin himself, is that he won’t be able to take part in the All Star Game this weekend, after working hard to put together his best season to date in a Cavs uniform. And, while it’s certainly a tough break for both him and the team… it’s not the end of the world (though the angsty, love-stricken teenager in all of us might be tempted to feel that way). No, the Cavs’ hearts will go on… and they’ll pick themselves up, and carry on to try and take down the young Wolves on their home court where they’ve been close to .500 this year (14-17).
Minnesota has had some misery of their own recently, having lost Zach Lavine for the year with an ACL tear, and forward Adreian Payne indefinitely to illness. Yet, despite a sub-par record, they do feature two young stars of the game in Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony Towns. Wiggins, who was spurned by the Cavs for Love to start his career, always seems to get up for the team that drafted him. He scored 23 points against the Cavs a couple weeks ago in Cleveland, and is averaging 22.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Towns is averaging 23.7 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, and also had a big showing against the Cavs with 26 points and 12 boards.
The Cavs do get some good news tonight, as Iman Shumpert returns to action, and is reportedly not on a minutes restriction for the game. This should help cover at least some of the minutes lost with Love out. In Love’s place, Channing Frye will get the start.
Cavs probable starting lineup: LeBron James, Channing Frye, Tristan Thompson, DeAndre Liggins, Kyrie Irving.
Timberwolves probable starting lineup: Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, Brandon Rush, Ricky Rubio, Gorgui Dieng.
Catch all of the heart pounding action starting at 8pm (EST) on NBATV, and write your love letters in the space below…
Prediction: Despite their lost Love, the Cavs lift their spirits and break a lot of hearts in Minnesota while pulling out a 123-118 victory.
I’m going to have to go back and catch up on the ‘Closer Look at Derrick Williams’ post.
It’s a good one… Mike did a thorough job…
Ditto
Great finish!
James has had 3 charges on him. They’ve all been a poor calls. Last one was in restricted area. 13 pts on 5-7 from D-Will.
D-Will with a winning play!
The whole enchelida! The steal and the bucket!
Dagger 3 from James.
DWILL so fast!

LBJ with a money shot there…
Enchilada getting crunch time minutes…
Second flop taken by Dieng…
Holding our own on the boards tonight without Love.
Ky just 2-10 from three… couple have been rattle out variety tho…
Karl Anthony fat face gets called for the loose ball foul
Wiggins is automatic on that J.
Wig just hit 40…
LBJ two boards away from trip double…
So sick Uncle Drew!
RJ, D-Will, & Liggs need more minutes next game. James & Frye a touch less.
DWill with 11 pts and 5 boards now…
James with awesome D on KAT. Can’t back that down.
Williams reminds me of Jamario Moon
How so? Jamario could hit the three…
Zinger!
Oh my Derrick
Dwill can run the floor I’ll give him that
LOVE that oop from Bron to DWILL!

Kibg & TT return. Up 3.
Bulls lead down to six over raptors.
Anyone see Kyrie barking at a courtside Wolves fan after that bucket? Guy responded by giving him the travel sign.
Cavs outscored them 12-8 without LBJ on the floor…
Bron coming back… so prolly 39-40 tonight…
KAT is really good.
Rubio is so good. God I hate love that guy.
Kyrie Bank shot is so nasty.
Rubio might get 20 assists…
I love the way Ky uses the glass…
Korver for 3. Up six!
Korver said, “get that weak shit out of here!”
Channing Frye is huge this game!
Korver with some D!
Nice D there by DWill and Kyrie…
I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THAT MIKE ( DWILL ) LET’S GIVE HIM MORE THAN 3 GAMES BEFORE WE LIMIT HIS SKILLS AND WHAT HE BRINGS —-I AM GLAD WE HAVE HIM RIGHT NOW I KNOW THAT
Just going by his entire NBA career…that is basically what he’s always been…
He’s never played with a winning team… or with LBJ…
Fair point, but he has also played a part on never playing on a winning team. I am hoping for the best. The Cavs could really use rebounding while Love is out.
He had six and got a couple stolen by teammates… I’ll take that every time
Wow! KK with the rejection!
Ky not looking to pass… bad sign…
Cavs got lucky with that non-call there…
Liking Derrick’s athleticism & energy. He definitely brings something.
He brings those two things. That’s about it, unfortunately.
He’s got four boards tonight too…
Gets a little tiresome Wiggins always going off on Cavs.
It’s his biggest chip on his shoulder though… I get it…
He should use that chip every game, if he needs it, not just against Cavs.
IS THAT CHANNING LOVE OR FRYE ” CHANNELING HIS INNER LOVE “
I’ve noticed that Korver is sneaky good at rebounding…
He boxes out.
Yeah, he’s just a smart, solid player. Defensively, too. He’s not great defensively, but he’s okay, and he’s not dumb.
YEAH IS THIS GAME IN FEBRUARY MORE IMPORTANT THAN A PLAYOFF GAME IN APRIL /MAY OR HOPEFULLY JUNE—GRIFF NEEDS TO HAVE A TALK WITH TY

Again I say….
Channing Love!
Frye double double now…
57% FGs for Minny.
How to blow a 14 point lead & get James no rest. James is hunting assists instead of attacking. The Wolves are playing the pass & not the shot.
Kyrie getting 4 fouls messed up the rotation. I’d expect him to lead the 2nd unit to start the 4th.
I’m having a flashback to the Wiz game with Liggs sitting as we get torched.
Thinking the same thing when Liggins needed for the D. I just do not understand what Lue is thinking. Maybe he will bring in Felder to guard Wiggins
Wtf with these calls
Ty Lue is just full of alternative facts… LBJ is already at 33 mins… Def going for 40+
Why is this a tie game? 93 points allowed in 3 quarters. LeBron will never get to rest if this continues. The Cavs are just outscoring the opposition. That will work in the season but it won’t work in the postseason.
Lets just play James 1-2 minutes in the fourth. Who cares about this game and why? Or the 1 seed? Or the two seed? Or the three seed? This team doesn’t need to win consistently in the regular season until mid march.
You know that’s not going to happen… why torture yourself?
I dunno. Feels good to vent I suppose.
I would play him in the last 5 minutes if the game is within reach or the Cavs have the lead.
That’s what you get for playing LBJ the whole quarter Ty… too gassed to make layups or passes… or guard Wiggins…
I am starting not to believe anything Lue says
I know the all star break is coming, but 33/36 minutes for James? Ty said he wasn’t going to run him into the ground? Maybe 36/36 is running him into the ground
I can’t figure why we aren’t willing to sacrifice games in the regular season. Hey Lue, take a page from cols book. The regular season barely matters for this team until late march. Tank some games by sitting out starters. Who cares if we get the fourth seed?
Wtf is Lue doing tonight. When isn’t liggins playing Wiggins. Like at all?
We are too 3 happy.
LBJ has played the entire third quarter…
That’s the 3-4th awful call this game. All against us.
Way too much sauce Bron…
Wiggins might go for 50…
Guess they’re not going to call two charges in a row…
James has played the whole 3rd so far. I was OK with heavy minutes. Heck, some rest in the 2nd half is needed.
