Playoff Live Thread: Cavs vs. Raptors, Game 1 (#TimeToWakeUp)
2017-05-01[Yawn…] …is it the second round yet? Seems like the Cavs have been off and resting for a month now. It’s actually been eight days, but that’s technically more time off then they’ve had collectively since October. They had similar downtime for the All Star Break, although both LeBron and Kyrie were working that weekend. Given how much this team was in need of some extra time to rest, recuperate and actually have a practice or three together, you’d have to believe the extended break was a positive development for the Cavs (especially given the number of vets they number on the north side of 30, not to mention Kyrie’s achy knee).
They may need all of that rest for the road ahead as well. Even though they swept their way through the first round against the Pacers, the games were all fairly close. And, their round two opponent is (on paper anyway) an improved version of the team they faced in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals. The only team, by the way, to take a game off of them before the Finals. This is not to sound the alarm, however. The Raptors earned a few days of rest themselves by finally dispatching the upstart Milwaukee Bucks in six games instead of seven. Maybe even time enough to help Kyle Lowry get his wrist healthy. Yet, though they’ve added Serge Ibaka and PJ Tucker to help with their scoring punch and defense respectively, they’ll still need transcendent games from their two All-Stars and some luck to even extend this series as far as last year’s.
Both teams struggled with holding leads against their first round foes… the Cavs due to defensive holes and the Raps due to stretches of stagnant offense. The Cavs averaged a franchise post-season record 112.5 points per game against Indiana, but gave up almost 109 points per game on the other end. Toronto’s series against the Bucks was much lower scoring, with the Raps averaging barely more points (93.8) than they allowed (93.2). So, the real difference in this series is likely to come down to whether or not the Cavs can elevate their defense, or the Raptors can get their offense going. Which is why the key matchup might actually be between shooting guards J.R. Smith and DeMar DeRozan.
As far as Game 1 goes, though, Toronto typically has a hard time winning them. The Raps are just 1-11 in series openers in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Cavs are 15-1 at home in the playoffs since 2015 (the only loss coming to the Bulls in Game 1 of the Conference Semi-Finals that year). As long as the Cavs don’t decide to sleepwalk through this first game, the odds are significantly in their favor.
Probable starters: Cavs: LeBron James, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, J.R. Smith, Kyrie Irving. Raptors: DeMarre Carroll, Serge Ibaka, Jonas Valanciunas, DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry.
Prediction: The Cavs answer the bell, stay woke and run away with a 115-105 Game 1 victory.

Tucker, Ibaka, Powell and Lowry came to play…
Yep. I could see them starting Tucker for JV next game. Or even Powell. Try to give DeRozan more room.
LeBron’s adventure with the server…

Their bench has outplayed the Cavs bench… but that’s about the only positive they can take away right now…
Man, Tucker loves that 2 with his foot on the line…must be his third one…
Tucker is taking the most foot-on-the-line 2s I ‘ve seen in a while.
Yeah… channelling Dion…
Cavs always give teams hope it’s so weird
Cavs seem to start quarters slow (after the first) and then go on runs…
Cavs old guy lineup getting destroyed again.
Exactly, maybe this is why the Cavs always struggle in 4th quarters.
Tucker is channelling Dion with these long two pointers… that’s like three of them tonight…
Grr. Wtf with giving Powell threes.
Gotta stay on Powell…
TT destroying the Raps tonight.
I bet the Raptors start Powell in Game 2 for JV…
Yeah. Seemed like a brain fart by Casey.
Reposting this highlight from early on for the multicultural appreciation…

Hack-a-TT? Make em pay!
I expected a win. I didn’t expect it to be like this. Hope the focus continues through the fourth
Raptors suck in game 1s
1-11… looking like 1-12…
LBJ! WD-40ed his three point shot at halftime…

DeRozan would be so much more dangerous if he’d just take a summer to learn to shoot threes…
He would literally be Kobe light
Some of that nice ball movement. Kyrie found a way to get it there.

…our GM knocks on his head between free throws?
Concussion protocol…
That was a nice sequence there. Overall, we’ve taken care of the ball & passed pretty well. 20 dimes already. Keep it moving. Let’s try to put foot on throat this time. They went 19-3 after we got up 18. They went 10-1 after we got up 16.

TT did some ballet on the layoff!!
Great catch and dime, TT. To uncle Drew…. For three!
Great ball movement!!
Don’t look now… but Kyrie has 8 dimes…

Nice. Look Irving!
LBJ fighting for rebounds…
Great delayed give and go with TT…
Turnover because neither Love or JR wanted to take the shot…

Again ty Lue is one possession too late in calling the TO
Right now the Cavs on offense look like five guys in a pickup game who have never played together before.
So weird the lack of driving by cavs did raps lead league in blocks??
We are scared of Ibaka & Jonas rejected James 3 times on 1 possession.
We gotta learn to foul harder…that’s at least two and-1s that should have been 2 free throws with little effort
That was an awful foul by TT…hate those dumb touch fouls as a guy goes for a layup or jam…
JR still not looking for his shot…
JR leaked out there. Cost us 3.
Please stop giving Ibaka open looks. Thanks.
A low-energy start to the half until James smacks the ball away from DeRozan.
LEBLOCK!!
Ibaka giving the Raps a dimension they didn’t have before with these threes…
Good sell job by KLove
I love Area 21 and have no idea why
That’s a lot of old Pistons on that segment…
Ben Wallace picking his Cavs.
Cavs need to drive more and force raps bigs to foul constantly shooting 3s is risky game
Mila Kunis still hocking Jim Beam. This commercial has been aging for four long years.
If you’re going to get beat by ibaka long jumpers over shorter players, so be it.
Good and salient point…
Man the Raps are just inconsistent. The get a great run and momentum going and just fizzle…
To be fair so are the cavs
Ha true. I guess it’s all about gettingthat first lead.
