Live Thread: Cavs @ Thunder
2020-02-05Oklahoma City has been a trouble spot for the Cavs. The Thunder have won five of the last six in the series and a 148—124 drubbing in January of 2018 still stings. Should be an interesting dynamic tonight as both teams deal with trade rumors. Cleveland is without Thompson, who is officially listed as nursing a quad injury. I’m surprised Henson is playing, given the Cavs’ desire to move him. The Thunder are surprisingly healthy, missing only Roberson, though Nerlens Noel did fracture his face last week.
I expect a drubbing here. But maybe Kev and Co. decide to show out. Go Cavs – and if this is the last night we see Thompson sitting on the Cavs’ bench, it’s been a hell of a run.

Tristan almost assuredly won’t he resigned this summer, too bad we couldn’t have flipped him today, going to be tough to get minutes for all 4
We have cap space and are not landing a big FA. So the price tag does not bother me much.
Look, we need some help on the wings, a combo forward, a big who can shoot not named Love, and our PGs need to mature. But Love, Drummond, Nance, and TT ain’t chopped liver up front.
We are not contenders with Drummond, but we are better than we were yesterday. A better base from which to build.

Well, I was on this a bit back. I like it for a couple reasons. 1) We are not giving up anything. I like Henson but he was likely leaving after this year and is nowhere near the player Drummond is. Knight never played and is expiring. GSW’s 2nd in 2023 is still likely to be in the 50s. 2) We are not tearing it all down. Hopefully this move puts a smile on Love’s face, and possibly on TT’s as well. A chance to retain him. And perhaps some decent vets in FA. 3) Like it even more if… Read more »

I guess we didn’t trade anything really but just a weird move

Well that’s interesting at least?
Wow. Interesting deal at the very least. We didn’t give up anything of value, but I don’t think Drummond moves the needle. Also, you have to pay him in the summer and it’s gonna be a boatload of money. At least, I have heard nothing bad about his professionalism all these years playing for mediocre teams in Detroit. Also, if TT stays, between Drummond and TT we are going to be the best rebounding team in the league. That’s something.
This makes even less sense now.

Interesting that Drummond shares an agent with Love…
Really not expecting the Drummond thing.
Still wrapping my head around it.
Drummond has a player option for 28mill, is that correct? Probably would opt out?
In. See above.
almost no chance he opts out.
I read this wrong. But yeah. He’s taking it.
Wow…did not see Drummond happening…at least Garland will have someone to throw oops to…

Hard to argue with this…
Ha, the @NOTSportsCenter twittern handle just posted that Detroit traded Drummond for a corn beef sandwich, half a diet coke, and a used sock worn by Lebron in 2015. I like this deal moving Knight, Henson, and the pick for Drummond. Feels like the Cavs got a steal, no?
i think this is a freaking steal.

DRUMMOND ON THE WAY?????

Not sure what the point of keeping him is, assuming that Klutch Paul already told them the salary expectations and the Cavs said no.
https://twitter.com/twithersAP/status/1225489387431104512
No one wants him at his salary. Even as a rental.
I think there are teams who want him, but Cavs are probably asking too much….and they will end up getting nothing when he leaves this summer…
I’d rather have the ‘smart’ Morris brother, if we can ever determine which one that is…

Wow, that seems like a best case way to get DLo for the TWolves…not saying it’s necessarily a great idea to get DLo, but dumping Wiggins for him? Sign me up.
pretty good deal for Minny IMO
In other words, Rockets owner is cheap.
https://twitter.com/chrisbhaynes/status/1225472789810827264?s=21
Untrue. It just doesn’t fit into their exception. It’s gonna be Henson.
MIKEO YOU ARE CORRECT ON THE GRIZ—-MAN THEY HAVE MADE ALL THE RIGHT MOVES —SPEARHEADED BY THEIR ALL STAR GD / MORANT
Dumping Dion and Johnson isn’t nothing, I guess.

Just saw a Reddit comment regarding Iggy: “Bored man gets paid.”
Funny stuff. Riley gave up way too much, imo. But if they by some miracle get to the Finals, I guess I’m the dumb one. Wish the Cavs were the Grizz…they are set to cruise…
What does anyone hear about possible Love deals? I kind of want him to stay and TT and maybe Henson and Brandon Knight go? ugh no one wants them. I feel like we could pry Levert from Brooklyn but no cav wants to play with Kyrie Irving.
Not hearing anything. I think TT gets moved today.

Jabari was always destined to be a King.
You can improve handles. Look at Delly and Bron. Both light years from where they were as rooks.
Yeah…You can improve any skill. It’s ridiculous to say you cant.
Improve yes, to a certain, limited extent. That improvement is not guaranteed even for gym rats. Dribbling requires hand eye coordination. Hand eye coordination is a natural talent. Having touch is a natural talent. Having vision is a natural talent. Understanding angles, space, etc, is a natural talent. Assuming that it is a given that any players can improve fundamental bball skills or knowledge to a meaningful level in the nba demeans the natural talent behind so called purely “non-athletic” skills. Shawn Marion shot ok for a few years on wide wide wide open treys set up from Steve Nash,… Read more »
bro…i respect your opinion. I’ve coached several sports. The odds are always slightly against someone working their way to improving a “skill” they don’t seem to possess at first. But Michael Jordan got cut from his high school team. The Goat wasn’t talented enough to impress a high school coach. Jason Kidd was a horrific shooter early in his career. He was a constant threat by the time he retired. The Marion example is a great refutation to your viewpoint: steve nash gave Marion wide open looks consistently for several years early on. He never had to work on a… Read more »
Steph Curry had amazing handles in college and ok vision by the time he was a junior. 5.6 assists in college is a fair amount. Go back and watch some of those tourney games. Kidd eventually was able to hit wide open set shots, but he wasn’t what I call a knock down shooter coming off screens or off the dribble. I am not saying guys can’t improve, but not everyone is ever going to have elite fundamental skills like shooting or dribbling no matter how much you practice. You still have to have natural touch and hand eye coordination… Read more »
Ooof. Didn’t say they couldn’t improve, just not that much. What improves is knowing your strengths and how to use them. You can tighten, but you aren’t going to turn someone like Sexton into a ball on the string guy, or a high ast to tov pg. Delly isn’t a great example. We’re talking minimal improvement. He still has to turn his back to minimal pressure a lot. Bron’s handles aren’t advanced and haven’t gotten much more so. He just focused on lowering the dribble and using the physical attributes he has. He isn’t crossing people or pulling advanced fakes.… Read more »
well it was a fun one at least, competitive against a very solid playoff team. the defense really tightened up nicely in the 2nd half and the passing on offense has really gone to another level. Just need to do better in situational basketball, nature of the beast with a ton of young guys getting heavy minutes.
If we trade love/tt I want vocal and “take no s$&t grinders coming back.” Tough love. Disicpline.
Man CP3 is tiny. Sexton has 2 inches on him.
dad bod helps! lmfao
I’d like to say coach needed a to there. But you have to save that Ina 2 two possession game for possible last shot.
Sexton does not have the handles to be a PG.
Schroeder schooled him no doubt
That wasn’t as much Schroder as it was Sexton
Schroder’s pressure definitely caused the turnover… because he knew Sexton would crack.
Not only that, his constant end to end pressure on Sexton slowed movement up the court so Cavs lost half the shot clock before getting into their sets. It had a big impact on the outcome.
yup agreed… also make the offense initiate farther from the basket, making it more difficult to get a closer shot.
Nope. People have said you can improve handles. Yeah maybe a little bit, but there is a natural born hand eye coordination factor. You either have a tight handle or you don’t. By the time you reach the nba you might tighten a bit, but you aren’t going to be much more than you were.
right.. .that’s the conventional wisdom of scouting… player’s really don’t change once they’re adults.
Yeah. What changes most is the understanding, and know how. Not so much the fundamentals, of which dribbling is one. Shooters can become better, but you have touch or you don’t. You have coordination or you don’t. You’re mentally quick and capable at understanding space and tactics or you aren’t. You’re physical or your not. You see angles or you don’t, etc. People reference shooting, but that is a bit of a fallacy. Shooting improves in terms of people hitting wide open set practice shots. You won’t turn a guy with no touch into someone that can shoot off the… Read more »
yup agreed.
Bad TO night yet again
Jesus. Come on
Give yourselves a chance.
Nice execution out of timeout.
Real nice screen Sexton to free up kev for the triple.
Not done yet guys, c’mon!!
so glad they’re finally being competitive…. need these situations to get better.
So bad at closing games. I feel like there is nobody we can trust with the ball in a one possession game in the fourth qtr. Wish Love didn’t have trump hands.
Gotta quick 3 here.
Why is Sexton not in Schroeder’s face like Schroeder is him??
Ugh another loss. At least it was competitive?
damn… just a couple of plays is the difference.
Arghh. So maddening! We lose this game 99/100 times. I wish they would coach to win a few of these. Larry and Sexton were great!
Adam’s basically bear hugs love with an illegal screen and it destroys the whole d. Leads to a Schroder 3
oh man… Love crucial TO
Fvck! Well, good fight.
Think this team is better on the road…
Thunder getting away with ridiculous amounts of contact.
WOW, BS call,
Maybe TT was the issue.
taking too many shots and not passing the ball.
Lol
Bad call boo!!!
NANCE!!!!
WOW WHAT A PASS…. Sexton gotta flop to get that call.
Larry!
HELL YEAH PORTER STOP THAT!!!
In order to win these tight ones with smaller inferior talent we need someone to go unconscious
No TOS, please
KPJ in for defense not sure it worked.
These touch fouls are getting stupid.
