Live Thread: Cavs @ Timberwolves (#Loveless)
2017-02-14Is there a sadder way to spend Valentine’s Day than without Love? Well, that’s the predicament the Cavs and their fans find themselves in tonight as they close out this year’s holiday with the knowledge that they’ll be missing Love (Kevin that is) for about six weeks as he recovers from knee surgery. The painful irony doesn’t stop there either, as the destination the Cavs will be spending this normally romantic evening is the same place that Kev called home for the first six years of his NBA career. You can bet Love would have enjoyed firing threes like Cupid’s arrows from deep in the Target Center in Minneapolis, or showing his heart and desire pulling down rebounds like so many valentines from the admirers he probably still has amongst the Minnesota faithful.
Probably the most heart-breaking thing for Kevin himself, is that he won’t be able to take part in the All Star Game this weekend, after working hard to put together his best season to date in a Cavs uniform. And, while it’s certainly a tough break for both him and the team… it’s not the end of the world (though the angsty, love-stricken teenager in all of us might be tempted to feel that way). No, the Cavs’ hearts will go on… and they’ll pick themselves up, and carry on to try and take down the young Wolves on their home court where they’ve been close to .500 this year (14-17).
Minnesota has had some misery of their own recently, having lost Zach Lavine for the year with an ACL tear, and forward Adreian Payne indefinitely to illness. Yet, despite a sub-par record, they do feature two young stars of the game in Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony Towns. Wiggins, who was spurned by the Cavs for Love to start his career, always seems to get up for the team that drafted him. He scored 23 points against the Cavs a couple weeks ago in Cleveland, and is averaging 22.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Towns is averaging 23.7 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, and also had a big showing against the Cavs with 26 points and 12 boards.
The Cavs do get some good news tonight, as Iman Shumpert returns to action, and is reportedly not on a minutes restriction for the game. This should help cover at least some of the minutes lost with Love out. In Love’s place, Channing Frye will get the start.
Cavs probable starting lineup: LeBron James, Channing Frye, Tristan Thompson, DeAndre Liggins, Kyrie Irving.
Timberwolves probable starting lineup: Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, Brandon Rush, Ricky Rubio, Gorgui Dieng.

Prediction: Despite their lost Love, the Cavs lift their spirits and break a lot of hearts in Minnesota while pulling out a 123-118 victory.

Remind me who all the people are who were bad rapping signing Williams LAST WEEK! Three games in, and he is already a FINISHER, which is more important than being a starter.
All year long we were hoping that Griff could do some magic again. Well, he obtained 40% of of the finishing lineup for Dunleavy + Mo! Does he have another one in the next 8 days?
Awesome win.

Probably a bit of a break for the Cavs that Lance went down with the ankle early… he was looking good and also probably had a chip on his shoulder from not getting signed…
So with Stevens coaching the East all Stars is like how many minutes will he try to play LeBron and Kyrie?
Why is stevens coaching?
Weird rule that coaches can’t repeat. Ty Lue gets to sit this one out.
Lovely. So we get that douche.
Oh… you mean… this guy?
I like how he rarely wears the glasses anymore…probably because it makes him look more like a ‘badass’…
Looks similar to Michael Douglas in Falling Down
Pacers just 9-17 on the road so maybe we can win a b2b
I’d still sit LBJ…
Agree for sure. But Lue will probably play James another 40 mins
DWill has certainly helped cut down RJ’s minutes…
The DWill handshake is pretty basic so far…

DWill and KK have been great additions for the Cavs so far. Let’s hope the Cavs can find a solid playmaker and a decent big just to get thru these last 2 months and a half.
KK & DWill over 10 ppg. That’s pretty strong for the reserves. We have 3 reserves averaging 9+ ppg. Shump, Korver, Frye, RJ, W-ill, Liggins + a PG & a C makes for a really solid 13 active players for the POs.
Well, let’s get home & rest up for tomorrow. Good win. Frye & D-Will really played well, James, Ky, & TT were themselves.

Timberwolves are a future monster and they are fun to watch. KAT has been super efficient lately
Only if they can learn how to play D from Thibs…
It’s Thibs, he will get through eventually
Wiggins & LaVine are extremely one dimensional: scorers only. Little things don’t get done.
+1. Wiggins averages 4 rpg in 37 mpg and he is 6’8″.
Game over. 15 pts in 4th for Minny.
Kyrie in the locker room already…..
Six boards for DWill!
Can we pay for some counseling or something for Wiggins to help him get over being traded by the Cavs? Enough with his personal Super Bowls.
He’s just a scorer at this point… hurts his team by not rebounding or assisting…
To that point his PER is a whopping 16.34 this year. Of course there are limitations to PER but basically no superstars have PERs below 20. 15 is league average.
+1…I’ll chip in…
Did not fill the stat sheet with 3 boards and just 2 assists

Plus LeBron did this to him tonight:

He does have the athletic potential and build to be an incredible defender but not sure he reaches that potential anytime soon. Think on the cavs he would have matured much more quickly in that regard with LBJ’s presence. Those first couple years on Minny really stunted him and the rest of those young guys in that regard.
Channing Frye game ball tonight… dude was awesome!
Agree – revounded and defended – a rare site from Frye
17 points allowed so far in the 4th quarter.
… And that’s the ballgame.
Kyrie is 10-27 & Love & JR aren’t playing & we are gonna take this one. Zero TOs for Ky, however. I’ll take that.
Ball game
Were the Wolves even on the floor for that last possession?
Korver so solid on boxing out
He’s not a great athlete. He is real fundamentally solid on each end.
Ky’s deep J hasn’t connected this game. Still, I think we’ve got this one. Put the FT shooters in.
Nice board by Korver
Yep… he’s got 5 and so does DWill… Good rebounding production from the wings…
