Live Thread: Cavs @ Mavs
2016-01-12The Cavs are making moves again for the first time since the Brendan Haywood, Mike Miller trade with the Portland Trail Blazers that resulted in sizable trade exceptions. According to Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com, the Cavs sent Smokin Joe Harris, cash, and a 2017 protected second round pick from the Sacramento Kings to the Magic. Orlando is giving the Cavs a 2020 second round pick, which originally belonged to the Portland Trail Blazers. Haynes also mentioned these key details:
The deal will save Cleveland approximately $3 million in luxury tax payments and open up a roster spot.
For players who obtain a buyout, Cleveland would have room.
The Cavs play the fourth game of their six game road trip against the Dallas Mavericks tonight. The Mavs have been a surprising team this season. They are currently in fifth in the West with 22 wins. After losing Tyson Chandler and Monta Ellis in free agency during the off-season, many people thought they would fall out of the playoffs. However, they replaced those two with Zaza Pachulia and Wes Matthews and haven’t looked back since.
The Mavericks are posting a net rating of 1.7, which is 11th in the league, and Dirk Nowitzki is still playing at a very high level, despite being 37 years old. The German is grabbing 6.7 boards a night to go with 17.7 points. He’s hitting 39.2% of his threes this season. Kevin Love will have his hands full, as he tries to stick to every single Dirk screen without giving up an easy driving lane to the basket.
The Mavs are 3-3 for the month of January, but this veteran team is the only team to beat the Warriors besides the Bucks. They know how to capitlize on every little mistake a defense makes. If there’s a lane to the hoop or an open shot, they will take advantage of it.
Three Things To Watch
- The Cavs have trouble making multiple rotations down low. As Dirk pulls Kevin Love away from the hoop by setting screens, will Tristan Thompson and Timofey Mozgov be able to slow the Mavs’ ball handlers down so the Cavaliers’ guards can stay in plays? If they can’t, the Cavaliers’ bigs will fall victim to easy dump offs down low, as the they have to commit to driving Dallas guards at the rim.
- Kyrie Irving scored just eight points against the 76ers and took 15 shots. He needs to show up tonight against Deron Williams and J.J. Barea.
- LeBron scored 37 points against the 76ers and hit three of his five threes. The 76ers couldn’t sag off of him at the three line. If the King can continue shooting 57.8% from the field like he has during his previous six games, the Mavericks are in for a tough game. Otherwise, they can sag off of him and give him all the shots he wants, much like they did in the 2011 Finals.
Mo Williams will miss the game tonight to deal with some family issues.
So many Mavs can make a 3!
If Dallas goes big, I wanna see Moz here.
They don’t often give continuation for that!
Third step. Good call.
Nope. It was on his third step.
Should be continuation…
Lebron thats what happens when you wait too late into the shot clock you can’t pass
Terrible possession…
Not a great Le-iso…too tough
One sequence to late Blatt
Matthews was playing out of control there. But whatever!
Bad call but we’ll take it.
I can’t believe Blatt doesn’t have a Big in there against ZaZa
Yep. And that’s why Delly should be in.
Delly for JR, please………
Kyrie got bailed out a little… but will take it given all of the calls that have gone the Mavs’ way…
Bailout. Gotta get Delly back in. Irving getting lucky
Ball lies! Kyrie makes both.
They called the same foul on Shump earlier. We’re even now.
WHEW.
Closing minutes, tight game, no Delly not a great idea
Brutal 3 by Matthews…
Good play out of the TO. SHump just missed the shot.
Come on Shump! You filled your quota!
Michigan hanging on right now
I think the Cavs should go at Dirk like Shump just did.
So did Blatt it seems
Wanna see Delly here instead of JR. Find a way to play Moz.
Delly and Moz for JR and Irving?
Can’t sit Irving. He just puts too much pressure on the opposing D.
Defensive rebounding is never a bad ideas guys…
Honestly have no idea where Kyrie’s head is. Run the offense!!! Stop milking the clock, you re killing the momentum!!
Delly for JR? or ride the lineup you got?
Next time the Cavs get an O-board, they don’t HAVE to take a quick 3.
Mavs with their own rebounding sequence…
Cavs gave them too many chances there! Blatt should’ve called a TO earlier when Love grabbed that board.
This game is hideous.
The kind of game you really, really don’t want to lose…
But beautiful at the same time…
Gotta hand it to Kevin… beasting on the boards right now…
It’s a make or miss league but he still is contributing
Kevin Love grabbing some boards!
Kevin Love is allergic to FGs…
HAHA. What an ugly/beautiful possession.
Great drive by Shump!
Love is battling like a man all night. Love to see that from him on an absolute miserable night
Yeah, missed a ton of shots, but he’s battling
How is this a small ball line-up?? Zaza pretty damn Big. No TT or Mozzy in
Well they get some opportunities there!
SOMEBODY PLEASE HIT A SHOT!!!
Rebounding clinic by the Cavs
How is that a foul? arghhhh
Ref didn’t call the foul till the ball didn’t go in. But it was a good call.
Refs bail out Patchouli Oil… smh…
Grabbed him with the off hand.
Some one throw some dreadlocks on this guy!
That was some serious cheese by Pachulia
Michigan and Maryland in a good one on ESPN for commercials
“make-or-break” for mozgov
AC is blaming Lebron on that one. Hmm
I’d blame him, too….he should have taken that one to the hoop
You don’t pass to a big on the break where he has to do anything but finish. No idea what LeBron saw on that.
Agree. Glad he said it.
LeBron thought Moz was going to the corner?
LeB just throw a DWill pass!
Dammit LBJ…
That was a travel on Lebron but Im not complaing
MFQ is back!!!!’nn
Wow, maybe Irving is actually alive…
KYRIE!!!!!!
Great to see Moz with this type of response after the benching last game
Apologies for the low audio… but here is the Moz Russian hat and bear commercial for those who didn’t see…
WOOOOOOOWWW!!! That was EPIC!!!!!!!!
Moz at +17 now….and he’s looking like last year’s Moz
Great showing for him to hush the doubters
Arch going Cols-Delly Style with the Love hate
Nope! Love stinks. He needs to get in shape! — my best Cols impression
Lots of balls to keep firing love and Irving. Big 3s! Come on let’s end this cavs
Okay lets play some basketball!!!
Please sit Love!
Okay never mind!!!!!!
LOL!
He can stay in after that shot
Hey Arch, how’s my a** taste?
Shaq, is that you???
Kyrie struggling with his shot but breaking down the D and dishing some serious dimes.
GD it, Kyrie.
Cannot go under that screen.
Don’t mind him going under Barea for 3.
This is what you got to do. Feed the beast!
Great D by Moz… and THROWS THE HAMMER AND SICKLE!!
Like the way Moz is finishing tonight….best he has all season
Sweet pass to Moz by KI!
