Live Thread: Cavs @ Mavs
2016-01-12The Cavs are making moves again for the first time since the Brendan Haywood, Mike Miller trade with the Portland Trail Blazers that resulted in sizable trade exceptions. According to Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com, the Cavs sent Smokin Joe Harris, cash, and a 2017 protected second round pick from the Sacramento Kings to the Magic. Orlando is giving the Cavs a 2020 second round pick, which originally belonged to the Portland Trail Blazers. Haynes also mentioned these key details:
The deal will save Cleveland approximately $3 million in luxury tax payments and open up a roster spot.
For players who obtain a buyout, Cleveland would have room.
The Cavs play the fourth game of their six game road trip against the Dallas Mavericks tonight. The Mavs have been a surprising team this season. They are currently in fifth in the West with 22 wins. After losing Tyson Chandler and Monta Ellis in free agency during the off-season, many people thought they would fall out of the playoffs. However, they replaced those two with Zaza Pachulia and Wes Matthews and haven’t looked back since.
The Mavericks are posting a net rating of 1.7, which is 11th in the league, and Dirk Nowitzki is still playing at a very high level, despite being 37 years old. The German is grabbing 6.7 boards a night to go with 17.7 points. He’s hitting 39.2% of his threes this season. Kevin Love will have his hands full, as he tries to stick to every single Dirk screen without giving up an easy driving lane to the basket.
The Mavs are 3-3 for the month of January, but this veteran team is the only team to beat the Warriors besides the Bucks. They know how to capitlize on every little mistake a defense makes. If there’s a lane to the hoop or an open shot, they will take advantage of it.
Three Things To Watch
- The Cavs have trouble making multiple rotations down low. As Dirk pulls Kevin Love away from the hoop by setting screens, will Tristan Thompson and Timofey Mozgov be able to slow the Mavs’ ball handlers down so the Cavaliers’ guards can stay in plays? If they can’t, the Cavaliers’ bigs will fall victim to easy dump offs down low, as the they have to commit to driving Dallas guards at the rim.
- Kyrie Irving scored just eight points against the 76ers and took 15 shots. He needs to show up tonight against Deron Williams and J.J. Barea.
- LeBron scored 37 points against the 76ers and hit three of his five threes. The 76ers couldn’t sag off of him at the three line. If the King can continue shooting 57.8% from the field like he has during his previous six games, the Mavericks are in for a tough game. Otherwise, they can sag off of him and give him all the shots he wants, much like they did in the 2011 Finals.
Mo Williams will miss the game tonight to deal with some family issues.
Sweet pass and finish from Lebron to Kyrie…that was beautiful
Delly to Lebron was sweet too
Gosh dang it. Want to, but you can’t hate Dirk.
GREAT play!!
No surprise Delly is leading the +/-.
That was a stupid double team. Delly had him pinned to the baseline.
Good D on Matthews, and they get a wide, wide open 3 from Dirk….sigh
They over-gambled
KLOVE MAKES AN INSIDE BASKET!
Geez, Kevin, dunk that. It almost rolled out.
Great pass and great finish that time!
In other news Porzingis leads Knicks in scoring tonight, and Jerian Grant has a breakout game as a rookie.
I’m loving this game. Cavs struggling with shots vs an elite offensive team and still competing
Is the Manitawoc County Sherrifs dept. officiating tonight?
Good one Arch!
Both shump & Delly with 4 fouls each
Eff that. If that’s not a foul on Parsons on the LeBron dunk, that’s not a foul on Delly.
Delly got mostly ball there…
That was another horrible call.
This game is making me ill
Cavs have had a frustrating abundance of multiple shots at the rim that don’t fall…
KLOVE padding his rebound stats.
Doesn’t matter if KLove has missed all game… as long as he can hit in OT…
Big shot by Love!
KLOVE!
Cavs just being outsmarted tonight.
and by themselves sometimes
I really hate no TT or Mosgov
Didn’t love that first possession
LeBron missed JR in the corner.
Michigan with the upset over #3 Maryland
Lebron 37, Kyrie 34. What say we on minutes?
It will be 42 and 39 real soon here.
I was a few points off in my prediction of 95-92
I was just about to mention that!!! ALMOST!
Man you really nailed regulation. Now for my 11 point win prediction to pan out
Really bad pass LBJ. Let’s hope the Cavs have enough energy to finish this game with a W.
Gotta pull this one out now…
Shump and Delly together are really good perimeter defense
THE BOMB!!!! I love how he stripped it, Delly collapsed on it and the ball rolled on its way to Shump
Have we won an overtime once this year??
Not that I can recall
Why was Bron inbounding? That was goofy. At the very least he’s going to draw more traffic out on the floor.
Unbelievable they didn’t call a foul there.
If they had I’d have flown to Dallas and set off the fire alarm in their hotel
Horrible inbounds!
Really nice play from Shump!!!!
WHo should take it??? JR or Kyrie???
Great adjutment by the Cavs. Blatt is a really good coach and Shump has top 5 hands
Oh sh**!!!!! I don’t want an OT!!!
Yeah it’s a bad attitude to have but I never have a good feeling either.
Here comes the switch again and Deron will end up one on one vs TT again.
Wow! Despite getting elbowed in the face, Shump still was able to snag the ball.
It is old w these no calls for lebron he takes a beating! Nice take to the hole
GREAT play by shump. CHANCE TO WIN!
Shump the master of the strip!
SHUMP-TASTIC!!!!!!
ZOMG SHUMP SLAP!!
Wow how in the world that is not a foul?
You’re never gettnig that call with 20 seconds left. Never.
Lets give Blatt some credit for a nice call right there
Beast Mode time
I take that back. You’re NEVER going to get a weak body foul with 20 seconds left. That’s the NBA.
Refs screwed him again!! Refs really hate him this year
I agree with AC the Mavs knew that switch was coming and they used it to their advantage.
Lebron is really good at basketball
LEBRON JAMES WITH NO REGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE!!!!
That was crap. Lucky he didn’t get a tech there, but that was ridiculous.
Yeah LeBron got hacked there! Give me a break!
Actually not as bad as I thought.
Yeah, there was a bump, but not that egregious
How many people was LeBron fouled by on that dunk?
Ok, just one foul. Parsons whiffed.
AC is dead on. That’s on LeBron. Absolutely no reason to switch there.
The scouting report is we will switch everything so they know they can get that too
Hooooly sheeesh. That was awesome but can’t believe Lebron didn’t get T’d up there.
AC is having a melt down on TT in there
No, the meltdown is on LeBron.
Yes I heard that too. I didn’t get to finish my comment. Got cut off and I said oh the heck with it. Glad you finished it
Terrible right there. Too easy to make that switch. There wasn’t even a screen
When will the Cavs learn to take away the drive to opposing guards. Better look out for Mathews.
Congrats DWill you made a basket! You’re still a scrub tho!
TT got pwned there
I love the cavs ability to go offense defense in situations like this
Got to defend against the quick shot here. Mavs will try and go 2 for 1
Huge fts there. Shouldn’t of needed them but that was huge. No fouls Jr
I love when AC rightly says “You gotta get player movement, ball movement here…”, and the Cavs move neither…
He gets a lot of practice saying that.
Delly went in for Shump, not JR. Or was I seeing things?
Your eyes saw right.
