Cavs: the Podcast, Episode 53: Summer League Review, LeBron, and the Madness of Love
2014-07-21Tom and I attempted to keep this podcast svelt, like a slimmed down Anthony Bennett. Sadly, we failed. This pod was trip to a Las Vegas buffet — we just couldn’t help ourselves: discussing the Summer League, LeBron, Aaron Craft, the melancholy of the the new Cavs era, what’s driving us nuts about Kevin Love trade talk, and so much more. You can listen in on SoundCloud at https://soundcloud.com/ctb-5/summer-league-review-lebron … enjoy.
Bennett, Waiters, #1, Contract X to make $ work, for Love. Nothing more. The Twolves have NO LEVERAGE and giving up Wiggins and taking back garbage contracts is just plain dumb.
The leverage they have is making a trade with a different team. Still, no way we should give up Wiggins.
They are blowing smoke. The Warriors haven’t changed the initial offer they made two months ago. I’ve read now that Chicago is offering a deal around Butler and Taj Gibson. THAT’S our competition? A couple of role players (albeit good ones)? If that’s making the Wolves think twice, then I’d pull Wiggins off the table. I can’t believe the Cavs are scurring around like little puppies trying to find more to convince the Wolves to do a deal. You know what will convince the Wolves? This: “Hi Flip. It’s David. How’s January treating you? In three months, your best player… Read more »
Just read the latest rumor from Woz, which looks like this: Wiggins, Bennett #1 pick for Love, Barea, Martin….with Cavs trying to find another team who will take another #1 for a center. OK….now this is starting to get silly. I’d like me some Love & all, but not only do we have to give up the best talent that ANY team is offering (Wiggins)….but we also have to take back two more SGs that can’t play defense, in addition to Miller & J. Jones. That is starting to sound like a HORRIFFIC supporting roster for Lebron. And in the… Read more »
I agree!!! We are trading a future star who wants to be here for someone who essentially said EF U when asked about coming to Cleveland. He wanted nothing to do with us unless the stars line up just perfectly and then he may be willing to stay for awhile. I am going to have a hard time rooting for him. He not only screws, our bench, our future picks, he takes an extra ten million in cap space too. We waited all these years and they give everything away fora few years of this jerk who hates Cleveland.
A trade would probably be a mistake for THIS year, and very likely a disaster for the future. Driving back from lunch, I heard the Bulls are joining the Love boat. Given that they have no young talent to trade, it is likely a scam to try to trick the Cavs into trading Wiggins + ?? for Love. If the Cavs DO NOT make any dumb trades, they are likely to win the division every year for a decade. The Bulls only chance is to trick the Cavs into shooting themselves in the foot. In the sad event that such… Read more »
No young talent to trade?
How about Taj Gibson, Jimmy Butler, Mirotic, Doug McDermott, Tony Snell…
I find the entire Love situation fascinating. There is clearly a time where teams need to acess what they have a build for the future – collecting assets etc. There is also a time where you spend spend spend to go after the championship when in ‘win now’ mode. I think adding LeBron and the Love potential has really moved us from one extreme (collecting assets for a rainy day) to the other (spend now for a shot). It seems almost to soon to make this jump. I feel like we did well to collect assets and now we need… Read more »
Everyone who doesn’t want the Cavs to sign free agents or make trades is going to be sorely disappointed when we sign more free agents and make trades over the next few years.
As for me, I will root just as hard for Mike Miller, James Jones, and LeBron James as I will Dion Waiters and Kyrie Irving.
I have to admit I fell asleep the last 20 mins of podcast. I really did. LoL FIrst part was good though.
we’ll have to market it as an exercise in relaxation!
Does anybody else feel like getting Lebron and then possibly trading for Love parallels playing a game and putting so much work into building a roster and then all of the sudden you end up putting a cheat code into the game. All the hard work starts to disappear and its just unfair when you play any one.
I don’t feel bad about getting LeBron back, but I think that “cheat code” sentiment is a big part of the reason I don’t want the Love trade. I just spent the last 7 years hating the Celtics and Heat for the same reason. I don’t think winning is the only reason to follow sports; it’s also nice to actually enjoy watching “your” players.
No. Once a player becomes a Cav, then he’s “your” player. This nonsense that trading and using free agency is somehow cheating is really really dumb.
The longer a player is with your team the more the sentiment grows. When a player grows on your team from a young age the sentiment is greater. During the draft, there are so many options that one must spend countless time researching and scouting a player to conclude that he is the right fit for the team — enhancing the sentiment of being “yours”.
Cols what is so hard to understand? Are you a robot that can only use rigid logic to define intangible qualities?
Ya but Wiggins isn’t yet one of our guys. And me and Nate have spent as much time scouting Wiggins as we have looking for the perfect trade piece. And I was a Parker guy. But I have been on the Love train for 18 months now. Longer than anyone has been on the Wiggins train. So he’s just as much my guy (and Nates guy) as anyone
I’m 100% with you bumsquare.
No. To reiterate a point. There are 3 ways to improve your team. Draft, trades, and free agency. One is not better than the other. You use all three to build a great team.
No. Applying strict logic to sports fandom is dumb. Dion Waiters is my favorite NBA player; I think Anthony Bennett could score 15 a game this year; I hate every sports team from Boston; I think getting Kevin Love would cheapen my Cavs experience. None of these things strictly make sense, but they make watching basketball fun.
Every team ever has been build by draft, free agency and trades. That’s how it works. If that’s not good enough for you maybe you’d be better off watching little league or something where there isn’t free agency and trades.
Every single team that has won anything of consequence was built by all three methods.
Do you know any cable providers that carry regular season West Denison League? I had to give up on the Old Brooklyn Youth League ever since Peter Diaz switched from the Dina’s Pizza-sponsored team to Mad Hatter Muffler. That kind of player movement just rubs me the wrong way. Either way, I really treasure your advice!
If embracing the irrationality of being sports fan isn’t good enough for you then go compute math equations or calculate rocket trajectories
hahahaha, bumsquare. classic response!
cwzagger: Actually, computing math equations and calculating rocket trajectories is my job, and I still embrace the irrationality of being a sports fan!
I’m 100% with you bumsquare.
That’s a really sad way to go through life.
I’m with you 100% bumsquare and Underdog.
Getting Love would cheapen it more than getting Lebron? Getting Lebron is awesome cause thats the only way we were join win. But I would have rather done it without him. He’s the Guy I rooted against as much as anyone in my life. If I can live with that you can live with getting the guy that the Cavs front office has coveted for 2 years now.
The (secured) link does not work for me.
I did like the talk on Love. Trading for him presents many issues in his camp, Minny, and Cleveland. That’s a lot of pieces that have to work together. TBD now with Wiggins signing this week.
While I don’t think Nate articulated it particularly well, I get what he is saying…
The past 4 years we have been the poor old rebuilding Cavs left in the wake of the LeBrocalypse. It was interesting to see a young roster grow and debate the hits and whiffs of upper management. You really had to be a true Cavs fan to be interested in this team.
Fast forward to July 11th, LeBron is back and the bandwagon is starting to get pretty full, probably going to need new tires soon.
I’ve heard variations of this opinion lately and I think it’s really a stupid thing to be worried about. If your team is good it will attract more fans. There’s no reason to be upset or mad or act like their fandom doesn’t count. I hope we get tons and tons of bandwagon fans. I hope that people everywhere start wearing Cavs jerseys and go to games and all the rest. There’s no reason that this can be construed as a bad thing. We have a fun young team and we just got the league’s best player to sign with… Read more »
I agree with you cols but I still wish that cars the blog had a commenting section for cars fans that watched the 26 game losing streak
This is not on itunes.
No. It is not.
Is it not going to be a normal download into the Cavs the Podcast section then?
Working on it, but no guarantees. Mallory and I have different Soundcloud accounts. But I’ve submitted it for approval to the itunes store.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I complain alot, but I appreciate the time it takes to do this stuff.
They did and it gets better but you have to listen until the end!
Ugh. I’m totally skipping any discussion of a nobodies like Aaron Craft. Since we do we discuss non-Cavs players who are probably not even D-league material.
Lol Cols714 has to be the saltiest guy on here. “WHY THE HELL AIN’T THIS ON iTUNES? WHO CARES ABOUT AARON CRAFT! I’M PISSED!!!”
Love you Cols haha.
I was interested in their take. Don’t worry it’s not like the topic dragged on for very long. I do hope he gets a shot somewhere.
Please tell me you aren’t really going to waste time discussing Aaron Craft. Please please don’t do this.
