Breaking: Cavs (Finally) Complete Kyrie Irving Trade with Celtics
2017-08-30We waited nine days to find out whether the Cavs/Celtics trade was going to go down or whether the Cavs were going to walk away due to Isaiah Thomas’ hip issue. Turns out that adding a minor piece to the deal was enough to get it done according to this WojBomb.
Boston will send its 2020 second-round pick via Miami to Cavaliers to complete the trade, league sources said. Boston would budge no more.
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) August 31, 2017
The final deal terms will be as such: Cleveland will receive Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, Brooklyn’s 2018 first-round draft pick, Miami’s 2020 second round pick, and a $5 million trade exception.
Personally, I hated the deal nine days ago and I hate it now. Unless the Cavs flip the Brooklyn pick for another guard, Cleveland is done competing for championships unless Isaiah Thomas or Derrick Rose learn how to play defense (and Derrick Rose learns how to shoot). Still, there’s always that possibility, and an outside chance that the Cavs roll through playoff crunchtime with ‘Bron at the point.
I also hated the nine day delay because the Cavs look like a team that is going to jerk you around for 10 days only to eventually cave if you stick to your guns. It looks bad on two fronts and the loss of face was not worth a 2020 second rounder from Miami.
But now, we can finally, formally say goodbye to six year Cavalier, Kyrie Irving, an enigmatic brightspot during LeBron’s exodus. Irving helped fuel one of the greatest comeback in American pro sports history and hit the biggest shot ever in an NBA Finals. He, LeBron, and the rest of that magical 2016 Cavs team propelled Cleveland to its only championship in the last 53 years. We will always remember him for that. Best of luck in the future, Mr. Irving. May you have a long & healthy career as an Eastern Conference runner up.

There is one scout’s comment that everyone (except Cols) will really like.
RAOUL—GUESS I HAVE SOME CATCHING UP TO DO ——GUESS US OL FARTS NEED TO “HANG TUFF TOGETHER “—HA-HA
Yep. Definitely at the age where you see the wisdom in your father’s long ago comments, like “you only see your old friends at funerals”.
THANKS PHIL!!
ANY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THAT GAME——–RAOUL ALTHOUGH YOU MIGHT BE GETTING A DECADE OLDER I AM BETTING YOU ARE STILL FAR YOUNGER THAN ME ( PUSHING 7 DECADES )
Sorry, Nomad. I can’t find any highlights. But Happy Birthday anyway!
Beat you there.
Euro update: Cedi with 11/7/4/2/2 in a Turkish win.
Doncic with 8/8/0 in game 2. 22/5/3 in game 2 for 3-0 Slovenia.
Doncic looks a little plodding — more so than Cedi. I’m not sure if he’d be too slow to do well in the NBA, or if he’s one of those guys who’s in control and the game slows down for him.
YOU ARE THE BEST EVIL !!!!——–THANK YOU !!!——YOUR BIGGEST FAN IS THE MRS NOMAD —–ENJOYS YOUR CREATIVITY ———–SAW WHERE RODNEY STUCKEY IS HEALTHY AND LOOKING AT TEAMS—IS HE SOMEONE CAVS SHOULD LOOK AT FOR INSURANCE ( WAIVE CALDERON ) —JUST WONDERING
Nah… he stinks!
ALSO ISN’T HE ( MCCALLUM ) A CANTON AREA PLAYER—–HEY GUESS WHO IS A YEAR OLDER ( NOT WISER ) TODAY—( THOUGHT I WOULD THROW MY OWN PLUG IN )——–MY MOTHER SAID SOMETHING ABOUT A STABLE / A VERY BRIGHT STAR / AND 3 STRANGE MEN BRINGING PECULIAR GIFTS WHEN I WAS BORN —–HEY HOW ABOUT THEM INDIANS –GO TRIBE —O.K BACK TO MORE BEER / GRANDKIDS / BARBEQUE AND LATER ON MRS NOMAD’S “SURPRISE PRESENT “—-” LIVING THE DREAM BABY “—-

The cake is a lie.
A week from today I will be a decade older. Official “older than dirt” country.
Think the only guy I might move that Brooklyn pick for is McCollum. Young guy, good two way play and four years left on his deal.
Is McCollum much of a defender? Haven’t dove into his stats but I have the opposite impression. Plus, a bit undersized for a 2. I would not trade Brk pick for him. Though that contract is attractive.
Would be playing the one. They play a dual combo guard set up. He’s an average defender. Much better than lillard, Irving, or thomas.
Frankly, I just don’t get all the impetus for another PG. We have 3 on the roster. 4 counting Felder. That isn’t counting Bron. If IT is out, then possibly. Super premature there. I would want 2 way players who can guard multile spots + another versatile big more.
Unless or until Thomas can play, the Cavs have a problem. Rose can’t hold up playing big minutes. Calderon is in decline. Felder hasn’t shown any sign he’ll be effective.
Asking LeBron to run the offense is one thing. But having him be the guy to bring the ball up for 25 or 30 minutes a game is a good way to wear him out. Opponents will press him to make him work. And the support will be…JR? Shump?
Right. LeBron should not be bring the ball up on a regular basis.

I wish we still had Liggins. That was so dumb. WTF Griff? Or was that on GM LeBron?
Eh. The only guy liggins beats out on this squad is Maybe Calderon
Liggins was better than Shump last year. At least a tie.
Also true.
He beats out Shump for $9 million less. He is Shump insurance for cheaper. Better team defender & stays in his lane on offense. Better passer. Plus he can help vs GSW & play next to Rose/IT for cross matchups on D.
Certainly more useful than Dahntay Jones. Maybe he’ll be able to help the Clips
Is Jeff Greem useful in anyway? What are the chances Green has a positive plus minus this year? Slim to none I think.
any way
You must be a huge fan of the D-league.
It’s hard to know the value of the Nets pick before the draft lottery. But we know Marc Gasol and Boogie Cousins as players. Neither of them will give the Cavs a definitive edge against the Warriors. Gasol is 32 and past his prime. He has perhaps 2 years left as something better than a replacement player. I love his game, but I wouldn’t give up a major asset (e.g. Love or the Nets pick) to get him. Cousins is more intriguing but his attitude and fitness are too inconsistent. And, I suspect he’ll be more interested in joining Wall… Read more »
Agree 100%. No way do I want Boogie. And even if I did, Love + Nets pick is way too much. Pels didn’t give up nearly that much.
Like Gasol much more.
One caveat, I am not sure you can beat the Warriors going small. Green + Durant + Curry + Klay + 1 ( Iggy/Liv) is amost impossible to top. A part of me thinks going big is the answer. Spurs were killing them until Kawhi got hurt. LeBron Smith Crowder. Love/TT + Gasol/Boogie is BIG. Throw Korver in for shooting. Or Osman if he works out.
The Calderon signing confounds me. What was the rush? I’d the rather the Cavs sign a wing defender (maybe even old man Tony Allen). Lebron, Love, Crowder, JR, Allen. That can be a nasty lineup.
If IT is ever healthy and scoring, what about flipping him to Utah with Schump or Fry for Rubio and Mitchell?
Utah loves Rubio. He’s not going anywhere.
1- Delly
2- Crowder
3- Osman
4- LeBron
5- TT
“Length and D Lineup”
No buckets lineup…
I don’t know how bad it would be. 3 shooters around LeBron & TT on the glass and rim running. It would be interesting, imo
The Anagram Machine is not kind to the new additions… The best it came up with for Jae Crowder = A Crowd Jeer For Isaiah Thomas = Asia Ham Hoist Only one result for Ante Zizic = I Zeta Zinc I can’t remember if I ever ran Dan Gilbert through the Anagram Machine, but some interesting options… Bad Ringlet, Garbled Nit, Badger Lint, Tabled Grin, Tabled Ring, Bared Glint, Ribald Gent, Bland Tiger, Drab Tingle, Table Grind, Brat Dingle, Ardent Glib, Darling Bet, Gland Biter, Darn Giblet, Great Blind, Rating Bled, Gnat Bridle, and Grab Lend It… just to name… Read more »
By the way… Cedi Osman = Comedians
And just in case you were wondering, there are no anagrams for Jeff Green… and that’s how he likes it…
I like Asia Ham Hoist
Derrick Rose…
Sicked Error… Sorcerer Kid… Record Skier… Irked Scorer… Sick Reorder… Rockers Ride… or Dicker Sorer
How about: Sick Error Ed?
Jose Calderon = Cajoled Senor or Colored Jeans…
For Zizic I like: Zeta Zink I
Certainly a lot of flexibility for Dan Gilbert! Great to convey context-dependent emotions. For instance, with the firing of David Griffin, I would go with Garbled Nit or Great Blind.

I want videos of Shump shooting thousands of corner 3s.
I wouldn’t hold your breath on a trade involving either 2018 pick anytime soon. We have a lot of new pieces. Have to evaluate how they fit (Crowder, Rose, Green, Calderon), if they are ready to contribute (Osman, Zizic), and how recovery goes (IT).
Once we have a handle on that, or James’ thinking, and how the Nets look, and how the prospects look, then it is decision time.
rose, green, calderone, zizic, it have no chance
Joe Thomas has changed his Twitter bio to this. The replies on the tweet are pretty good too.

Tribe rolling winning 10 straight!
Tribe is amazing. Can’t wait until Miller and Brantley are back.
PHX has got to be interested in something that we have. The two picks, zizic, cedi, shump, IT- something’s gotta be worth Bledsoe. LAC gotta be interested as well for Beverly.
I’d give our own first, Miami 2020 2nd, Shump, and any of (IT, Kay, Tavares).
Also would include Rose, and/or Calderon
I would give a lot for Bledsoe…not the Nets pick, though, unless they throw in Jackson…
Is IT in the Tavares/Felder category now?

Vardon reported Cavs fielding offers on Brooklyn pick!! Once they add another piece, the KI deal is going to be a slam dunk. I am very excited. I really don’t want them to sit on th pick.
Where did he say this?
It was in one of his articles. Nothing definitive, but says they have already fielded calls about it.
“As owners of Brooklyn’s No. 1 pick, which could be a top-five pick in next year’s draft, Cleveland has fielded numerous calls already about a potential trade. It could be a part of a major trade package for the Cavs later this year, or, conceivably, the Cavs could make that pick next June.”
Yes what Mike O said below. Dan Gilbert will use that pick next June.
If Lebron doesn’t tell them he’ll be back, I would be shocked if they trade it.
What is the basis for you guys thinking this? I am just curious. Was there ever any articel with sources that said Cavs didn’t want to move the picl?
I mean, I agree it’s possible they hold it. But the FO has been aggressive in trying to make moves. So it seems likely they will try to move it. They may not get what they want, and may ultimately hold it, but I think they will actively try to move it.
Yeah, all the articles/ tweets stating that Gilbert cannot get assurances from Lebron, and he wants the pick so the Cavs aren’t at ground zero if he leaves. I totally believe this, fwiw. And frankly, I don’t really blame him.
Fair. But lots of those articles indicate he likes the pick because he could use it to add another player OR hold it if they can’t make a major move. So I agree it’s an insurance policy, but I think they will actively see if they can pull off a blockbuster with it.
We’ll see.
All the Cavs beat writers have said publicly that Dan Gilbert is holding it, in the event LeBron bolts off-season. LeBron won’t commit, it’s not how he operates. Now perhaps next offseason, if LeBron were to resign, Dan could draft a player, then do a similar thing that’s they did with Wiggins.
If you have LeBron I think you try to win every single year and not worry about what happens next year. Without him we suck so why keep the pick
Well, yeah people are calling about the pick. That doesn’t mean the Cavs have any interest in trading it. I’m sure Ainge took calls on it all the time.
Of course they are calling about the pick. Almost every team called about KI. Not many actually offered anything reasonable.
