Preseason Live Thread: Cavs vs Wizards
2017-10-08Well, no LeBron again. This time though, no Love, Smith, Wade, Rose, Crowder, Shump, or TT. Not much going on here tonight. What will be good to see is Lue work with guys who aren’t usually in the rotation, something he didn’t often employ last season.
The Wiz Kids are still a good team this season. Contrasting Cleveland’s own off-season, not much changed for the Wizards this off-season. Their bench is still weak, but Beal, Wall, Gortat, and Otto Porter will have another season under their belt. They’ll be good enough to compete in this very weak Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, the steep drop off after the starters will make things tough. They’ve added Tim Frazier, Jodie Meeks, Mike Scott, Devin Robinson, and Michael Young. If you are shaking your head and thinking that those additions don’t sound that impressive, good. Because they aren’t. This season will probably, ultimately, end about the same as last season, barring any significant moves.
Not much on the line this game, but at least Lue will have the opportunity to evaluate the back half of the lineup today. This will likely go a long way in deciding the final player to get cut to make room for Wade.
Sounds like Bauer is pitching game 4.
That is certainly what I would do.
Well then we are in trouble /s

You da Man!
Well, that has been two totally different one-run games.
Ugh! Hopefully the Tribe remember how to hit tomorrow.
The bats are going to have to wake up for them to win this series. We are probably not going to be able to limit NY to 1 run either tomorrow or game 5 if it comes to that. The lineup has to produce. It is as simple as that. You couldn’t ask for much better pitching. I mean they gave up one run and couldn’t get it done. That is just not going to be enough if we want to advance.
No doubt. It’s concerning.
Carlos, don’t swing from your heels. A single ties it.
Rally time?
Ok, that was a good AB by Ramirez even before he put the ball in play. A step in the right direction.
When Joe Smith’s slider is good, like the last one to Judge, it looks like it breaks two or three different times before it gets to home plate.
I thought Carrasco pitched great, he just couldn’t get any help.
Okay Kipnis just blew an outfield catch. This isn’t happening tonight. I think this series goes 5 games, unfortunately.
Kinda of getting that feeling. I would not start Tomlinson tomorrow. Would rather start Salazar or Bauer on short rest.
Tomlin
Yeah either way it’s not ideal.
Keep this second run off the board, then just need one swing in the 9th.
Steal the base!
Pinch tun Allen here. Chapman cannot hold runners and has a long delivery. I would try to steal here immediately. Might try for 3rd.
Yep, though his 102 heat makes gives the catcher a bit more time, especially if they pitch out.
Reds fan too. NL teams stole at will. Watched it for years. Real cautious from Tito there. I guess Lindor leads off now. Didn’t like burning Chisenhall. I’d have let him hit.
Yeah that was odd.
Let’s do it!
I hope Chisenhall drills that wife beater Chapman, with a line drill to the face.
Or even better, he hits a homerun.
Yanimal in now.
Brantley is a worthless spot in the roster.
Yeah. Can’t help but think Chis might do better. Not sure why he didn’t play today. Ajax left, Kip center, Chis right, and Bruce do.
Dh
Well my jinx sort of worked as he drew a walk.
Kudos, now they gotta capitalize.
Got a walk. Getting his timing back will have worth in the long run.
I hope one day the World Baseball Classic no longer exists. It always seems to screw Indians pitchers. Such a dumb event, that no one cares about.
Damn. Miller not quite himself after coming back. Agree JRam is pressing. We have a couple guys who are out there but not themselves. JRam. Miller. Brantley.
Three words. World. Baseball. Classic.
Yeah but again, they have to score to win. Even in the 8-7 game they didn’t hit the ball consistently and had only 5 hits the first game. The comeback cam down to a couple big hits in the midst of long dry spells. The bats gotta pick up the staff every now and then.
You are correct sir!
Down one thus far. It was always unlikely they would shut out the Yankees in NY. The offense is anemic and has been really since the last couple regular season series. That has to change.
Ramirez needs something good to happen. Hasn’t been himself at the plate or in the field yet this series.
Completely agree. He seems to be pressing.
He had two decent series last year and one abysmal against Toronto. We are not going to get far unless he is himself though.
Yes, Miller bails out Carrasco on the loaded bases.
Sweaty palms time!
Pretty awesome!

He only team I may hate more than the Yankees is the team down 2-1 to the Astros.
“THE” —– iPhone stutter.
Bleep the Yankees!
LINDOR just got robbed of a 2-run home Run by a basketball player.

It would be nice if Judge had IT’s body.
Ha! Yeah, or Felder.
It was a nice play no doubt, but in most other parks that has no chance of going out. They have to string some hits together. Tanaka isn’t walking many. If Jose woke up, that would really help.
Probably Fenway.
Nice play, not great. A high fly ball that he had time to wait for.
For most other guys it would be a great play, because most other guys aren’t 6’7″.
It’s funny that MLB has Doosan as a major sponsor. Doosan is a Korean company and they have their own baseball team, the Doosan Bears. I think Shin Su Choo played for them.
MEANING R.J. STAYS ALSO
Hope so.
I wonder how bad Encarnacions ankle is? I kind of don’t believe it’s day-to-day. Brantley has been ineffective thus far, but so has Ramirez.
Too bad they didn’t keep Yandy Diaz. Maybe the Rangers will loan us Napoli!
JUST READ IN CAVS RUMORS THAT TY ALREADY HAD A CONVERSATION WITH CHANNING TELLING FRYE—-” BARRING INJURIES YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PLAY TOO MUCH THIS SEASON “–ARE WE WAISTING A ROSTER SPOT AGAIN ?
Nah! We’ve gotta podcast to run!
No. We just are only going to play 10-11 guys and Frye is not one of them.
Starters: IT, JR, Crowder, James, Love
Rotation: Rose, Wade, Shump, Korver, Green, TT.
Non-rotation: Frye, RJ/Calderon, Osman, Zizic.
It seems like every pitch Tanaka throws lands on home plate.
Problem is it appears very difficult to differentiate the splitter from the fastball because of the late break to down and to the right. Seems like it will be a strike and then boom out of the zone. It is a nasty pitch and he seems to have control of it tonight. Based off some things I read on a Yankees blog, seems like his struggles earlier this year were based off control and inability to keep it down and out of the zone when it breaks. Going to be tough. Hopefully they adjust. So far it seems like he… Read more »
Yeah I’m positive it’s very difficult to discern. But I would just hold off swinging at anything, even if it looks like a strike.
Yeah. Tanaka has done a great job of getting ahead in the count, at which point the splitter becomes a devastating out pitch. They may have to try to jump on some fastballs earlier, or be disciplined enough to lay off anything down in the zone with 2 strikes. Of course that might lead to some looking ks. They have to get to him before he can throw that split out of the zone at 2 strikes. Easier said than done because he seems to be throwing it fairly consistently after the first strike.
Carlos Santana has the right idea, as he gets walked.
Yep. Ajax had a pitch to hit, just missed squaring it up. Shows you how small that band box is. Brantley, unfortunately, looks rusty as heck. That’s two double plays so far for Tanaka.
If I’m the Indians, I don’t swing at any of Tanaka’s pitches. They’re all balls!
That was the big problem tonight. Swinging at way too many bad pitches.
Let’s go Tribe!
Carrasco sharp in the first, including a 3-pitch K of Judge.
So far so good. He will need to continue because Tanaka is going to be really tough tonight. That splitter is dirty.
YEAH MAYBE –I.T. —CAN SHOW HIM HOW THE “SMALLS ” SURVIVE IN THIS LEAGUE HOPING KORVER IS WITH CEDI EVERYDAY IMPROVING HIS STROKE —–THINK IF SHUMP DOESN’T SNAP OUT OF HIS 2 YR “FUNK ” HOLLAND WILL GET MORE MINUTES OR SHUMP WILL BE GONE ( WE WILL NOT GET MUCH IN RETURN )—-“ZZ” IS RAW POTENTIAL BUT I LIKE HOW HARD HE PLAYS
Shumps $10M / Y is what will be important in a trade.
Heavy rotation: James, Love, Crowder, Rose, Wade, JR, TT, IT.
Light rotation: Korver, Green, Shump.
Out of rotation: Frye, Osman, Zizic, RJ/Calderon, Holland.
Perhaps IT can be the Felder whisperer while he is out?
I have been impressed with Holland every time I’ve seen him. Seems like he can play both ways & is pretty heads up.
WAS THINKING THE SAME ON FELDER ( OVER TAVARES ) ON 2 WAY———-CRAZY THOUGHT ( MAYBE TOO MUCH ADULT BEVERAGES AT GRANDSON’S BIRTHDAY PARTY ) WOULD WE KEEP PERKINS OVER FRYE —-CHANNING HASN’T SHOWN UP TOO MUCH IN PRE-SEASON —HE IS PRETTY MUCH 1 DIMENSIONAL PLAYER ( SHOOT THE 3 ) —-O.K. I WILL TRY TO SOBER UP —-THINK JOSE IS ON HIS WAY OUT —-HOLLAND HAS SHOWN HE CAN PLAY ( WOULD TAKE HIM OVER SHUMP ) AND YES THE “MIGHTY QUINN ” WOULD LOOK GOOD IN A CAVS UNIFORM RIGHT NOW —-GO TRIBE !!
Missed it. From the box score, looks like Green was pretty good. Felder & Osman decent. Holland Good. Calderon hit some shots. Some TO issues for Felder, Zizic, & Osman have some TO issues, but for young guys playing there first games (Osman, Zizic) it is to be expected. Zizic struggled at first in Summer League and then got better. This is another step up. Looks like Lue will use the last two games to get the first unit/2nd unit rotations down, sans Shump. Looks to me like Tavares is behind Felder in the race for the 2nd two-way. Though… Read more »
What’s a TO issue?
Turnovers
Thanks. My brain fixated on Time Outs.
Nice pull up by Cedi.
Felder is so worthless in the pick and roll.
Man. RJ cannot buy a call.
Love me some Donald sloan. Talk abound an nba grinder.
Preseason refs: ugh.
Zizic with a nifty post move followed by a. Block!
Cavs bench looks better today and Felder isn’t abjectly awful.
Zizic needs some stickum.
OK I HAVE GRANSON’S BIRTHDAY PARTY —YOU GUYS ARE ON YOUR OWN—-ENCOURAGED TODAY ON THE PLAY BY THE RESERVES —–” GUNSLINGER ” GOT HIS STROKE BACK—–GO TRIBE !!
Wow. Some dumb plays here.
Plenty to go around…
Really nice run by the cavs here. Wizards a little shell-shocked cause of the mac injury.
That no call on RJ was ridiculous. Should’ve been a flagrant one.
FELDER WORTH / GAMBLE FOR 2 WAY CONTRACT ——INSURANCE IF WE CUT JOSE ??
No.
Sheldon Mac in my prayers tonight. That was awful.
DO NOT TRADE CEDI—-HE DOES NEED TO WORK ON HIS “D ” THOUGH
He’s shown some good transition play so far.
My oh my Jeff Green just skied for a slam.
Green with the coast to coast!
Wish the Cavs had stuck with Quinn Cook.
