Live Thread: Pacers @ Cavs
2017-11-01The Cavs take on the 4-3 Pacers at home tonight. The Pacers are coming off a comfortable 18 point win against the Kings less than 24 hours ago. Yup, the Cavs get to play fresh against a team playing the second night of a back-to-back. This game really is Cleveland’s chance to start righting their early season performance issues.
Indiana is a team the Cavs shouldn’t struggle against. The Pacers take just 24.7 3s a night which is 26th in the league. That’s good because the Cavs are allowing teams to shoot 40.7% from beyond the arc so far this season. They’re also letting opponents jack 34.1 long balls per game. Both of those numbers are bottom three in the league.
And, as of now, Indiana’s shot blocking and 3-draining big man, Myles Turner, is out for this game due to the concussion protocol. In his only game played this season, Turner hit one 3-pointer on his way to 21 points, 14 boards, and four blocks.
Victor Oladipo has come on though and will definitely be a challenge for the Cavs. He’s shown the ability to jet up the court off of quick outlet passes, and he is 13th in the league in scoring with 23.9 points a night. He’s also shooting 45.7% on deep balls this year. He will shred the Cavalier’s perimeter players in isolation and will run the pick and roll a decent amount forcing Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson to make some tough decisions.
Still, the Cavs can load up on him and have a great chance of making this game a statement win. Yes, I said statement win. The Cavs are at that point right now.
If Cleveland can get out of this game healthy, show a dedication to at least running on close outs in their haphazard defensive trapping scheme, and consistently work guys open off the ball, tonight will be worth watching. I’m picking the Cavs 113-103.
The Recap is up guys!
One year ago Cavs just raised banner and World Series was in Cleveland. Even Browns seemed smart and hopeful, despite the record. One year.
Yup. It is really hard to get to, and then stay at, the top.
That is why it is such a bummer that the Indians filled the 2017 playoff roster with guys from the IR rather than the guys who won 22 in a row. They could be playing game 7 right now. No one seems to ask the question: “Who’s idea was it to fill the roster with guys who haven’t played in a long time”?
I mean Lindor and Ramirez didn’t show up. Aside from the grand slam, they basically did nothing. That couldn’t happen if this team was going to advance against an offense like the yankees. All they required was 2 runs and they couldn’t get it done at the band box that is Yankee stadium. However, Diaz should have been on the roster and Jackson should have played every game.
Also not convinced the Astros wouldn’t have shelled us.
The Yankees were a bad match up.
Tribe had vastly better pitching.
They could have shown up in the next round. In MLB, guys are always having five day hot streaks and cold streaks.
With Kluber injured they had no shot anyways.
They could have won game three.
Maybe. But Kluber says he was not injured, just his mechanics were off.
Two major blunders:
1. Brantley on PO roster. We love the guy and all, but he had not played, and should have been in pre surgery, not on the field in the playoffs!
2. Kipnis in CF rather than Alamonte. If Kipnis was not rusty (he was not) he is slightly better at the bat than AA. But AA is vastly better in CF. That is a no brainer.
Frye, Osman, Zizic, and Calderone played 0, and had entire rows of 0 in the box score, except a +/- of -3.
They played in garbage minutes
Actually, a garbage half minute.
Let me just say, Im becoming a Ben Simmons fan. Kid good.
really impressed. I wish that jumper becomes automatic early.
I would trade Shump and the Nets pick for him…
no.. way too much. Shump and Longbardi should be enough to snag him out of their team. /s
Glad they had That players meeting to get their spirits up. Otherwise we would have lost by 60
Two games. If they are competitive against the Wizards and by competitive I mean play good d and the game is a one possession game in the final 30 seconds win or lose, and beat the Hawks they get a bit more leash. If they lose the next two, and get blown out in one or both, then we reach defcon 1 in my opinion.
At that point I guess a change needs to be made before they dig too deep a hole. Unfortunately, I just don’t think a coaching change barring getting a legend will help all that much.
Dennis Haysbert wearing Dodger blue is just not right.

And still two months to go before LeBron’s annual January funk. It will be EPIC this season — if things haven’t totally blown up by then.
WELL AT LEAST ( WITH T.T. OUT —KARDASHIAN CURSE ) CLUELESS WILL BE FORCED TO PLAY FRYE / ANTE OR BOTH ——–HERE IS HOPING BOTH PLAY WELL AND MAKE CLUELESS LOOK EVEN MORE FOOLISH
I must admit that my inclination to cut Lue some slack (because maybe maybe he has a slow developing good plan) has about run out.
It might be time for a tough high school coach that will hold practice and make the players run some drills on basic offense and defense.
JOHNB IF HE IS GOING TO WALK ANYWAYS AND HE LET’S THE TEAM KNOW THIS ( AND PUBLICLY ANNOUNCES IT ) DON’T YOU AT LEAST GET SOMETHING FOR HIM WHY YOU CAN
Ok. If he actually demands a trade, then yes. At that point we are past defcon 1 and the nuclear Holocaust has already taken out 60% of the world’s population. Sorry I may have not seen that part.
As far as him saying he isn’t coming back, then I don’t think think this team can contend after that, so the same applies.
As far as coaching changes, I just don’t there just aren’t any guys out there who will make a difference for a Lebron led team at this stage in his career. Maybe Karl somewhat commands his respect, but if we are bad defensively now…well it has been a long time since Karl’s Seattle days.
Just don’t think there are any guys,
I really have to stop posting on mobile

Thanks Corby!
Huh. Not sure whats wrong. Old man team just cant compete and we never let our young players play
But keep up the good work longbardi – not like the high pick and roll is a staple play or anything
I GO BACK TO WHAT I POSTED EARLIER ——IF THE SEASON CONTINUES (DON’T SEE ANY REASON FOR IT TO CHANGE ) AND LEBRON AGREES —DO WE TRADE HIM —-YOU KNOW HE IS NOT COMING BACK NEXT YEAR —YOU CAN SEE IN HIS POST GAME INTERVIEW THE FRUSTRATION IS ALREADY THERE –LEBRON IS SMART ENOUGH TO REALIZE / KNOW THIS TEAM CANNOT COMPETE —SO YES I THINK TO THE RIGHT TEAM HE AGREES TO A TRADE
He’d look good on the Wizards with Wall. Otto Porter Jr and a pick.
Are you crazy? Come on. You don’t trade Lebron for anything less than a franchise player and we aren’t getting a franchise player in a contract year. Washington pick won’t even be in the lottery. The Brooklyn pick might not be a top three. You ride out the season and hope for the best.
Yeah I agree. Just thinking out loud.
I admit, I am more concerned than ever he will leave, but I would rather contend or gamble on contending for one more year than blow it up.
I’d rather contend too. It seems like the organization isn’t “All In” on contending IMO.
And why in the world would you say that? Because they didn’t sign Oscar Robertson? Because they didn’t trade Kyrie for Durant?
Yes that’s clearly what I’ve been peaved about. /s
With the Browns FO, we can say EXACTLY what we would have done better. I don’t see anyone with a suggestion of what the Cavs FO could have done better this summer. It is not like they got the paperwork in late on a trade, or something.
Lue’s been doing that a bit too.
Are you Crazy? No one will give a franchise player at this point. If someone gives you some serious rebuilding material, you have to go for it.
If LeBron gets to the playoffs in the east, they have a chance, maybe a smaller chance, but a chance nonetheless to get to the finals. A finals trip is worth it. That is presuming he hasn’t demanded a trade or said he for sure isn’t coming back which would probably kill the team’s already small chance of developing chemistry. Unless you get a franchise player, they have zero chance of making the playoffs by January, or LeBron demands out or says he isn’t coming back it isn’t worth a chance to go back to the finals.
No. You don’t trade Lebron, ever. Because he can walk anyway this offseason you will get pennies for him especially since he will only go to a contender with his no trade clause. If we are that bad we will end up with a lottery pick anyway. Get him into the playoffs and you at least compete for a round.
Question is for what/who?
Knicks won’t give up Porz. Bucks won’t give up Giannis. Maybe, maybe you get Kwahi, but I doubt it. So what would you be getting in return? Paul George from OKC and a pick?
I’ll be honest, I’m extremely upset right now so let me sleep and tomorrow I can think about what type of trades you can get for LeBron. Maybe we can have a thread about thar since it will definitely have a lot of different opinions.
You aren’t getting a franchise guy back in a contract year, just no way. I am pretty sure the Spurs are too concerned with the future and maintaining contending for the long term to to do that.
You could get a haul of picks and young players. And make it a package deal including Shump and Calderone.
I would say picks are only worth it for this front office if they are guaranteed top 10. LeBron won’t have his trade clause to go to any team that has that kind of pick.
Waive his trade clause
There other plans that have to be tried before thinking of trading Lebron, like trading someone else like Love or TT or next year’s own pick, waive some old guys, sign some buy out candidates at trade deadline etc.. Cavs still just one move away from finals.

That is an amazing stat and sure shows how absolutely miserable our defense is now. I may be follow your route EG and not watch games anymore. Don’t believe I feel this way.
That’s embarrassing.
At least Lebron telling it like it is: “a lot of teams are playing well, and we aren’t”
I guess the LBJ at PG experiment isn’t working… 8 turnovers…
They played their best ball with Rose, Wade/Smith, Crowder, LBJ, and Love at the five as evidenced by the bucks game. One game, small sample. However, I feel like love at the five was better than the current situation though I have been unable to watch the last three games. At this point I would do Rose, Korver, Crowder, LBJ, Love to start and hope the spacing is enough. Korver played ok defensively in the games I have watched. Love was better at the five when the cavs were competitive. I don’t know what to do about the bench but… Read more »

If this year ends badly, cavsdan will have the dubious distinction of losing James twice. Sadly, his ego is as big as his checkbook in letting Griff walk
yeah he’s gone. what reason would he have to stick around? A new terrible GM? A coach that can’t find him rest? This team is likely to turn things around once they get to know each other (Crowder always plays better when he’s emotionally invested…will take some time for that to develop). IT could come back and be amazing. But we are done with lebron after this year
He’ll start scouting guys from Detroit like Manny Harris, claiming them to be the next big thing.
I could see Comic Sans maxing out IT
Wouldn’t be surprised at all…
Grif is the reason this team sucks after spending all these millions, the reason TT and JR are being paid 30-35 mils annually and the reason Lue got a 35mil 4 or 5 year extension. He should be fired. Too many bad choices.
Maybe. It might be the case that LeBron sez that Klutch players must their deal. Not saying that is the case, but it might be.
I do agree TT got somewhat too much (he looked mighty good the year before, and the year after) and JR got way too much. (He had some really nice moments the previous year, nothing since).
I MISS COLS OPTOMISM—-” WE ARE GOING TOTHE FINALS AND BEAT THER FRAUDS “—THE ONLY THING FRAUDULENT IS SAYING THE CAVS HAVE A HEAD COACH / AND ANY SEMBLENCE OF DEFENSE —–LEBRON THIS IS NIOVEMBER !!
More fantasy/ propaganda than optimism…
I think the Cavs will try harder against the Bullets, but I just can’t see a different result…they can’t make shots, and they are beyond terrible defending in transition…only way they stay in it is if Love, Korver, or JR have a monster shooting game…
WHERE ARE YOU GEORGE KARL / RICK PITINO / MIKE FRATELLO ANYONE …..BUT CLUELESS—-PLEASE
I don’t know if a coaching change does anything for this particular team. Unless it is a guy like Poppavich I don’t see it making a difference because LBJ will have to get fully behind every single thing a new coach wants to install, change, and all of the discipline and accountability a new coach attempts to bring. If he doesn’t, coaching doesn’t matter for this team.
Well I’m glad we won a championship in 2016. It was a fun run.
Agree with Arch! (no mistake this time!)
IF VEGAS ONLY HAS WIZARDS AT SINGLE DIGITS ODDS/ FAVORITES —I AM GOING TO MAKE A WHOLE LOT OF MONEY COME FRI NIGHT
The Cavs spirit is doing well.
ARE THE CAVS SCHEDULED TO PLAY ON CHRISTMAS —-NBA SCRAMBLING TO RESCHEDULE THAT GAME—
Christmas day massacre agains the Dubs…143-91…
Coal and Cols for every Cavs fan!
Not enough black smoke. This looks fake.
I’d love to hear an interview with Corby…
HIS FAMOUS ” WE GOT TO WATCH THE FILM QUOTE “—I AM GOING TO FRIGGIN PUKE !!!!
A coach who watches the game & says that is either:
1) An idiot who can’t tell what happened w/out watching film. Or
2) Doesn’t want to call his guys out publicly.
He’s a nightmare. He’s Doc Rivers 1.5, and the .5 is he has Lebron on his team.
Lue: We did some good things. But we got to be able to sustain it.
? What game was he watching?
The best part is that Myles Turner didn’t play…
Lue out. Jeff Van Gundy.
The team is unwatchable. Lue is supposed to know defense.
I thought last year’s team was crummy to watch…this team has it all over them…not sure there’s a more unfun team in the NBA to watch…
MUST BE NICE BEING A BUCKS / TIMBERWOLVES / 76ER’S— EGAD I SAID IT—- CELTICS FAN RIGHT NOW AND THERE IS HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
They are starting to peak at the correct time.
Adding injury to embarrassment…

Well, they are officially in trouble if it is serious. They already were, but this could something that stretches them to the max and puts them in a deep deep hole.
2-3 weeks recovery. IMHO it will give them another excuse for losses. The next month is going to be very interesting.
That is not good. Maybe it forces Lue to play Frye/see what he has with zizic.
I don’t think either of those is a magic bullet for their problems though, maybe a bandaid to put on a severed limb.
Now even the iron man is out
honestly…he was struggling to make an impact anyway. Maybe this allows Frye to see the court to spread the floor and Zizic maybe gets some real opportunity. Although more likely Lue just doubles down on Kevin Love at center and burns him into the ground
Early look at this year’s t-shirt…
Looks like that is Browns colors!
OH BOY CLUELESS UP NEXT— THIS IS A MUST SEE—CAN’T WAIT TO HEAR THE WORDS OF WISDOM SPILL OUT OF HIS MOUTH
We have to be aggressive. Play faster. Get in better shape. That is what he said, right.
Of course, playing fast with the oldest team in the league is kind of stupid, yes?
I mean, is there a team we can beat?
“We did some good things in the first half”…”our starters have to play better”…
Can we send Wade, Green and Crowder to Chicago for Markkanen?
I would do that all day, all week, all year…even the Bulls aren’t that stupid…

Losing by 17 and giving up 124 to the pacers after getting blown out the past two games, I don’t know…mmhm, mmhm, mmhm. It would be one thing if there looked to be an easy solution but….if they can’t defend or can’t be hyper efficient on offense, they are going to lose, and lose a lot this season. I will give them two more games to turn it around. After that I will officially start to question whether this team has the personnel or coaching to contend for the east, and maybe even make the playoffs. This is the performance… Read more »
Don’t forget they were on a second night of a back to back…
Like I said, they look and have looked like a lottery bound team.

Wonder if Gilbert ever gets tired of looking like a fool…
I’m sure he’s preparing for his visit to the WH once this game 7 is settled.
I want to see if the Wiz can score 200 points against us on Friday!
If Cavs miss a lot of shots, they may be able to fast break to 200…I think the Cavs can hold up their end of the bargain…
