Live Thread/Not A Recap: Cavs @ Pistons (Or, Tuesday Night Redux?)
2020-01-09The Cavs are facing the Pistons for the second time in less than three days. They’re in Detroit this time though. John Beilein is hoping the team has a better showing in his first return to Michigan since leaving the Wolverines. He doesn’t want to regret his decision.
The Cavs entered the final frame Tuesday night with an 11 point lead. Kevin Love already had 24 points on 10-13 shooting. He had gone 3-5 from deep in the first three quarters and had four assists! Yea, he was having himself a night.
He shot just two more times the rest of the game for six points. Meanwhile, Darius Garland and Collin Sexton went 1-8 in the fourth and scored just six points. Derrick Rose, the guy they presumably were matched up against much of the quarter, scored 11 points including a go head floater-winner where he scooted around an Andre Drummond screen to get past Matthew Dellavedova with 26.1 seconds left in the game.
It was the same story it is many nights. Kevin Love doesn’t get the ball when he should, and the Cavs come up short. Love is a pro. He’s a very good pro. The young guys on this team need to realize this.
I cheated and watched this game picking my spots, looking at the box score, and watching the recap. All of those things just furthered the narrative that Love is the best guy on the Cavs. He is space. When he pops, he sucks a defender out and leaves a wide open lane against a slower big for one of the guards. Or, he’s just open and hits his shots for the most part. Sexland will need to realize this if they want to win.
Here’s a fact: Sexland went 1-8 in the fourth quarter. Collin had their only make when Kevin Love flashed up to screen just enough to make Derrick Rose stutter and then slipped out immediately to 3-land. Collin then had a lane as Thon Maker stayed home on Love. None of Sexland’s other shots used Love as a screner. None of Garland’s did. Come on…
Oh yea, I forgot. You can always drive by a larger defender into a giant guy like Andre Drummond and try to dunk. See, Sexton did it below.
Collin Sexton what are you thinking 😐

Sexton doesn’t want to give the ball to the 6’10” guy standing behind the arch who is 4-6 from deep and just canned a three ball less than 30 seconds ago and has a 6’3” guard on him. A 6’3” guard that is cheating away from him for some reason. NO WAY. Or, even use that tall 3-bomber to screen. THAT’S RIDICULOUS.
Everyone in the universe sees this stuff. What is Beilein seeing? Why doesn’t he just bench Sexton and Garland for a game and make them watch film for the duration of a game of what happens when Love is involved? Some wins might follow.
The Cavs left one out there. The Pistons grabbed it. Nonetheless, the Cavs should bounce back tonight. The Love lack of touches talk is loud and clear right now. Love even apologized for being upset over it ultimately. This is the start of a great turnaround story…I can hope.
Cavs 110, Pistons 101. Love gets 35.
So…am I alone in thinking we have nuked Sexton’s development by adding garland to the priority list? I am a Garland fan in a way…but trying to get both of them to improve this year while breaking ina rookie coach…seems foolhardy at best.
Maybe we see the jump in effectiveness that sexton made last year by Garland and see sexton regress? Or worse we see sexton regress and garland doesnt progress much and next year both have sophomore slumps? Again I dont think I’m the only one to see this problem coming…
It’s a natural concern – who gets the minutes. I don’t think Sexton’s sophomore slump is on Garland (that may not be what your saying) – and I truly hope he snaps out of it. His form late last year where he was an inside and outside threat was exciting. But I’ve seen enough of Sexton’s heavy minutes this year to see that it’s not going anywhere good. Garland needs time on court to develop – my opinion is that Garland has more potential / more slings in his bow than Sexton. Another way to look at it is as… Read more »
Maybe. But I think it is more likely Sexton’s ball-hogging is stunting Garland’s development (and ticking off Love & TT) than the other way around.
Not much 2nd unit stability. Injuries (Henson, KPJ, LNJ), trades (Clarkson, Exum), and rotation changes (Knight, Delly, Zizic, Henson, McKennie).
With more expirings, or Love, likely to be dealt, there will likely be less continuity going forward. So they aren’t good together but it is hard for them to find their footing apart.
I think there’s a concern that you’re not developing Sexton as a passer, but he’s getting MORE usage this year at shooting guard than last year as the point guard, AND his passing has gotten worse.
So i think Sexton’s lack of development is more about how he’s really a ball hog who refuses to pass and he’s one of the worst defenders and 3pt shooters in the NBA to boot.
Jazzed after the win, though the Pistons are nearly as bad and more injury riddled than we are.
Still, career night for TT, Love makes a clutch 3, Garland 20 with 7 dimes on efficient shooting, and Sexton made winning plays on D & on the glass.
With trips to Denver & 2 in LA, probably gonna get tougher soon.
Garland is coming along nicely. He had not topped 6 dimes all year and has now done it 3 times in the last 5 games. In those 5, 27 dimes, 11 TOs. Over 2.5/1 Assist to TO is really good. Not Point God territory (3/1 or better), but really good. His FG% is still hovering around 40% (40.5%), but the 3PT% is up to 37.2% after a rough start. He can pass & shoot. In the NBA. 40 games out of high school. He is never gonna be a great defender, but maybe he can develop into a smart one.… Read more »
He certainly has some vision. An up and coming stroke. Put a strong defensive team around him and you will mitigate his weaknesses.

HOU-OKC on TNT…OKC is actually a super fun team to watch…
put some cash on OKC.
Agreed. Point God is back. Leading the association in clutch scoring (I think). SGA is developing nicely. Aquaman is a rock. Schroeder has been killing it off the bench. Gallanari is having a borderline all-star season (at least offensively).
Is Aquaman a thing, because that should be his nickname
Maybe Cedi was looking for a second overtime so TT could pad his monster stats.
ICING THE BEER DOWN RIGHT NOW TO WATCH REPLAY LATER TONIGHT ——-” BELIEVELAND LIVES ” !!!!
Beilein actually out coached Casey. Bad look for casey.
Casey got outcoached in the playoffs a few times…..
Luck >. Skill
Sexton reminds me of year 1 TT. Some nice quickness but frustratingly clueless a lot of the time.

Is it me or are they freezing out love?
just you… they’re shading double coverage on him, Love passing out of those situations immediately, which is correct IMO.
Our young lads no match for Rose’s experience.
GD it Sexton
TT is the best player on the floor
Fire Sexton into the sun.
You know I agree.
LMFAOOO Sexton hard earned bucket there.
Next one not so much.
TT with a great contest
Wish we has Exum…
TT an all star tonight
nice help defense TT, someone has to help him get the rebound.
Garland, Love, TT with some good chemistry there on the offensive end.
what was Sexton doing??? staring at the Love mismatch, never passes it.
Sexton just refuses to pass to the place the play dictates
Brown is an annoying player…
Cavs defense horrible in the 1st half, elite in the 2nd half.
Nice to see KPJ on the bench…
Nice D on Rose. McKinney’s length worked.
The guy we just signed on a 10 day is our #2 wing and #1 wing defender.
