Podcap: Cleveland 115, Detroit 112, OT (Or, Tristan’s no Slug)
2020-01-10Tristan Thompson was phenomenal on the court, in the huddle, in the post-game interview… just everywhere. His fingerprints were all over the most exciting win of the season so far as the Cavs came back on the Pistons multiple times in the fourth quarter. Tristan Thompson had the highest scoring game of his career with 35 points and 14 rebounds to boot. TT used that poutine push shot to go 15-20 from the field, and then a huge 5-6 from the line (including 4-4 in crunch time and OT) in a whopping 45 minutes. He countered Andre Drummond who also had a huge night with 28 and 23 boards. Also exciting was Darius Garland who led a bench unit that was balling in the early fourth as he put up 20/2/7 and had a stretch of three straight dimes to get Cleveland rolling.
#RT @SportsCenter: Tristan Thompson had himself a night.

It was an exciting final seven minutes and a MUCH needed victory as TT, Garland, Sexton, Love, and McKinnie had huge moments down the stretch. Nate Smith and David Wood got in the podcast booth to break down the game and the state of the Cavs as a whole. We went over TT’s monster night, Beilein outcoaching Dwane Casey, the slugs/thugs debacle, Andre Drummond, “yay” or “nay?”, who should be in the all star game, what it’s like to get cooking appliances for Christmas, and our favorite topic, the infuriating Collin Sexton.

AGREE WITH BOTH OF YOU——KLOVE -( WITH THE RIGHT ATTITUDE ) AND NO TEAMS GIVING US FAIR OR BETTER VALUE IN RETURN IS MORE A POSITIVE IN A CAVS UNIFORM ——-BELIEVE THE CAVS HAVE NO INTENT AT RESIGNING T.T. TO A LARGE CONTRACT —-IF YOU KNOW YOU COULD RESIGN AT A ‘BARGAIN ‘ CONTRACT THEY WOULD PURSUE —BUT REALLY THINK T.T. IS TRADED –IF HE KEEPS ON PUTTING UP STATS LIKE THE LAST GAME HIS STOCK WILL SOAR ………..IS KOBY SO AFRAID OF UPSETTING / FEAR IT MIGHT AFFECT HIS CONFIDENCE …Y.B . THAT HE WON’T AT LEAST “EXPERIMENT ‘… Read more »
Perhaps I am delirious after 1 win, but I would be OK with seeking out being a facilitator in a bigger trade.
I still have hope Love & TT could stay if the backcourt improves, and Garland is showing some potential & vision. And I do not want to give Love away for pennies.
Still down on YB but hoping he makes a Triatan transformation.
Agree. If Love is ok with staying, I would prefer him here since any return is probably pretty useless. But that is a huge if and likely dependent on Koby pulling his head out of his rear and allowing Sexton to be moved to 6th man. TT is probably out no matter what due to him being expiring. More palatable since he would need to be resigned likely on an inflated contract compared to his value.
Definitely looking forward to see if Garland takes the next step in his game, and starts demanding the ball like Sexton does LMFAOOO
but seriously, Garland needs to take that next step, demand the ball, control the game… if I were him, I’d run pick and roll every time with Love, and finding ways to get him the ball to play off of him… Coach Beilein mentioned that was the pet play (that Delly discovered and coached up Garland and Love) to get good looks at the end of the game IIRC.
same was said by someone about Cedi come to think of it… but Cedi could activate himself by getting some more rebounds on the defensive end to initiate transition offense… his defensive rebounding is abysmal and it would kill two birds with one stone for him if he hit the boards and ran the break himself.
The Wiz won tonight vs Atlanta without Beal.
Jordan McRae was their leading scorer.

Huh. It’s almost like someone started tracking this a month and a half ago.
That being said, the war is garbage because the Cavs are trying to lose.
Does getting rejected count as a TO? It isn’t but it kind of is.
If not, look at Sexton’s numbers:
A) Assists = 86
B) Rejections (72) + TOs (77) = 149.
His assist to FU rate is nearly 1:2. Not good for a PG.
MIKEO/ NATE / “CHUCK ” / SHAQ——THANK YOU FOR SOME MATURE / INTELLIGENT OPINION’S / EVALUATION’S ON BELEIN AND THE ‘THUG ” DRAMA ————-SO FED UP WITH THE SO CALLED ESPN REPORTERS TRYING TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING —DON’T EVEN TUNE INTO THEM ANYMORE ————-REALLY THOUGHT WE WERE DONE WITH THE DRAMA WITH KYRIE / LEBRON LEAVING ………………..WHICH IS WHY IF YOU WANT TO GET MATURE / INTELLIGENT BASKETBALL / SPORTING NEWS ———YOU FOLLOW ALL OF US HERE ON CTB
The ‘thugs’ story is such an air biscuit. If it were some other coach saying it, it might be meaningful, but with Beilein it’s pretty much dead solid certain he just misspoke and didn’t even notice. Sexton even said he’s described them as slugs in the past. Also, the most hilarious description of this team’s play is ‘thuggish’.
What’s more interesting is how the story got out. Most likely one/ some of the players either telling their agent or whoever, and then it gets its way to Woj. All the nonsense constantly surrounding this franchise is exhausting.
The inside the NBA stuff last night was really good. Barkley pretty much said that no one has a bad word to say about Beilein and when a guy is a weasel or a racist or whatever, EVERYONE in basketball knows. There are no secrets cuz everyone knows everyone and everyone talks. He said he’s never heard anything about Beilein and this was mainly about guys who don’t want to practice or have long film sessions trying to get one over on Beilein. Shaq said the Cavs should wish they played like thugs.
Yeah, most likely someone with a grudge leaked it. Frankly, I think Woj reporting it was a pretty chickens*it thing to do, but he’s done that kind of thing in the past.
Espn needs content. Whether it is dumb or not, real or not, their bread and butter is gossip, and manufacturing drama. They are a soap opera network.
Good stuff Nate just as I suspected. I’ve listened to every beilein presser and he has a bit of a stuttering problem… That’s what I figured it was and his explanation made more sense than just randomly calling the team thugs.
East
Starters
Kemba, Butler, Siakam, Giannis, Embiid
Bench
Lowry, Brogdon, Beal, Tatum, Bam Bam
Dinwiddie, Middleton
Siakam is the most important player on Toronto on both ends and is averaging 25ppg.
West
Doncic, Harden, Kawhi, James, Davis
Reserves
Dame, Mitchell, PG, KAT, Jokic
CP3, Gobert
Good picks, but Butler is listed as a F not a G. Weird how they change those year to year. And your reserves have 3 Gs & 2 Fs. Can’t do that either.
Starters: 3 Gs & 2 frontcourt
Bench: ditto
Then: 2 at any position
If I had tp pick today:
East: Kemba, Beal, Siakam, Giannis, Embiid
Bench: Brogdon, Brown, Butler, Middleton, Bam
+2: Lowry, Sabonis
Just missed: Tatum, Dinwiddie, Young, Simmons
Injured: Irving
West: Doncic, Harden, Kawhi, Bron, Davis
Bench: CP3, Mitchell, PG13, Jokic, Gobert
+2: Russ, Dame
Just missed: KAT, Aldridge, DeRozan, Gallo, SGA
Ah. I wasn’t going by their rules. Feel like they should break it up into pgs, wings and bigs. Makes more sense to me based on how the game is today.
Should need at least four bigs, at least two points, and at least four wings with a lot of flexibility on position. Bigs should need to be at least 6’7”. Wings at least 6’4”. Points could be any height. Think that would allow much more positional flexibility.
DG coming along. Definitely showing some potential to be a decent pg with sone range. Other than some flashes of vision he shows, the thing I have been most excited with is his rather advanced (for a high schooler) understanding of hesitation in p and r combined with some clever moves around the bucket. Not a great finisher, but he has shown flashes of the nash no gather scoop as well as some nice up and under moves. Gives me some hope he may become a decent finisher for a pg despite not having great athleticism.
I’m really kicking myself for not titling this “attack of the killer slugs”
I do not have the tech ability to do it, but I am thinking:
1) A yellow (gold) banana slug, close to the UC Santa Barbara banana slug mascot of Pulp Fiction fame.
2) Being ridden by a wine clad swashbucker with a lance instead of a sword. In a jousting posture.
3) The Excalibur music they play pregame being played in the background.
4) All for slug and slug for all.
