Draft Profile: Jalen Suggs (or, mini-Scottie Barnes with a bag?)
2021-07-01Hello CtB!
We continue with our draft profiles series, and today we’ll look at the highly touted Gonzaga freshman, Jalen Suggs. Let’s dive right in…
The Pros for Jalen Suggs
As with Scottie Barnes, what immediately jumps out about Suggs is his mind for the game of basketball. He’s a coach on the floor, with elite anticipation on both offense and defense. Suggs ranked in the top 10 of the West Coast Conference in assist percentage as a freshman point guard. Suggs showed off elite defensive playmaking with a 3.5% steal percentage (ranked second in the WCC). There is very little that Suggs can’t do on a basketball court.
The second thing that stands out watching Suggs is his overall athleticism. In spite of a lack of extraordinary length (6’3″ without shoes with a 6’5″ wingspan in 2018 according to nbadraft.net), Suggs is the ideal size for a NBA point guard and has OK size as a small ball shooting guard. He’s built like a tank and can leap out of the gym and throw down lobs in transition. Suggs’ physical play style will fit seamlessly into the NBA.
The third thing that stands out watching Suggs is his ability to score and make plays in the half court. Suggs has a bag of moves off the dribble to create space for himself and for his teammates to score. Suggs demonstrates the ability to shoot off the dribble at an elite level (1.103 points per possession, 93rd percentile in the NCAA according to Tyler Metcalf of Hashtag Basketball). He also demonstrates the ability to get to the rim fairly consistently posting a .370 free throw rate, which is a higher rate than guys such as Donovan Mitchell (.260 FTr at Louisville) and Jamal Murray (.283 FTr at Kentucky). Suggs also has a knack for finding space off the ball for easy buckets. Suggs is the type of perimeter offensive player that is coveted in today’s NBA game with his combination of scoring and playmaking. As this statistical tidbit shows, Suggs projects to be a dynamic scorer in the NBA:
Only 8 freshmen since 2008 meet these criteria:
FT% > 75
usage% > 22
block% > 0.5
steal% > 2
at-rim FG% > 62.5
at-rim unassisted% > 601) Anthony Edwards
2) Bradley Beal
3) Jayson Tatum
4) John Wall
5) CJ McCollum
6) Josh Christopher

The Questions for Jalen Suggs
The biggest and seemingly most obvious question about Suggs is his three point shooting. Suggs only shot 33.7% from three this season. Two bits of context add some nuance to that number. First on the positive side, the film shows that Suggs generally took high degree of difficulty shots from three off the dribble. He was rarely spotting up and shooting, which is an easier shot to make. Unfortunately for Suggs, he’s pretty bad at the catch and shoot three, averaging 0.919 points per possession, ranking in the 39th percentile in the NCAA (h/t Tyler Metcalf, Hashtag Basketball). Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report reported that Suggs averaged a dismal 29.7% in catch and shoot situations. While catch and shoot threes are one of the easier shots to work on, if Suggs doesn’t improve that aspect of his game it limits his offensive versatility and will cause a clogged paint when he plays off ball against a set defense. Luckily for Suggs, the catch and shoot three is an easy shot to improve with practice. His free throw percentage (75.4%) is indicative of a fundamentally sound shot technique and the film shows a fine shooting stroke.
Perhaps of greater concern than Suggs’ shooting is the level of competition he faced while playing for a mid-major powerhouse in Gonzaga. Layne Vashro of Nylon Calculus compiled a ranking system based on the strength of competition among basketball leagues across the world. The West Coast Conference wouldn’t even rank among the top 50 leagues in the world (check out the article here). The lack of NBA competition Suggs faced does show up on film. For instance, while Suggs shows ambidexterity with his ball handling and finishing, he was rarely forced to his weak hand to finish around rim. I expect a lengthier-than-usual adjustment period for Suggs to familiarize himself with such a steep upgrade in competition. Fortunately for Suggs, his NBA body and athleticism won’t be a cause for concern, just his skill level as he sets out on his developmental NBA years.
Final Thoughts
The apparent concern for Suggs’ ability to score among online basketball fans seems exaggerated. Suggs is a bucket with the ball in his hands, and even better than a bucket, he’s also a problem with his ability to create easy shots for his teammates with the pass. The real concern about Suggs on offense is whether he can be effective without the ball in his hands especially as a spacing jump shooter. Adding the catch and shoot jump shot will make him a complete offensive player.
The larger question is how fast can Suggs adjust to NBA competition. I expect him to struggle for a bit, and how fast he can develop will determine how high his ceiling is. As with Scottie Barnes, I can’t see Suggs washing out of the NBA with his ability to create his own shot, pass, and defend at a high level. But can he become a franchise superstar player? At the end of the day, Suggs is worth a gamble. Why? Because the combination of NBA athleticism, scoring ability, and innate feel of the game are the ingredients necessary to become a superstar. For Suggs, it isn’t about becoming a completely different player, it’s about fine tuning and doing the things he can do better and more consistently.
As for the draft, I think the Rockets are gonna take Green (look, they stole our backcourt!), and we will have a Mobley/Suggs choice.
I say we take Mobley (though I’d prefer Green) and the hunt for wings continues. And Sexland lives on.
I hope Love goes nuts at the Olympics.
Yup… agree with you, I think Rockets take Green, and Cavs most likely take Mobley.
GOOD FOR YOU BUCKAROOO—–( ON MOVING —WISE MOVE BY A WISE PERSON )——-THE MORE I READ—–THE MORE I BELIEVE GREEN WILL BE TAKEN BY THE ROCKETS ( STILL THINK THAT COULD BACKFIRE ON THEM WITH KPJ —NOT WILLING /// WANTING TO BE ‘2ND FIDDLE ” ) AND I AM PERFECTLY FINE WITH CAVS GETTTING // TAKING MOBLEY
thx NOMAD bro.. when there is no choice, the decision tends to be easy.. no wisdom required, all you need is a desire for self-preservation..
I will go against the grain & take the Bucks IF Giannis is fairly healthy by game 3.
PROBABLY AGREEEING WITH JOHN B —-SUNS IN 5 OR 7 DEPENDING ON GIANNIS HEALTH——-BEEN ROOOTING FOR THE SUNS SINCE PLAYOFFS STARTED —–WAY BACK WHEN ——SEEMS LIKE FOREVER
Refreshing to see these two teams in the Finals. Hope Giannis can play and health is otherwise not a big factor in the series. And also hoping this series goes 7!
Who y’all got?
Suns in 5 if Giannis doesn’t play. Otherwise Suns in 7.
Definitely going with Suns not sure how many games though,
HEY BUCKAROOO——I FORTUNATELY LIVE IN A SMALL RURAL AREA// ACTUALLY OWN A FARM// CAPMGROUNDS // ETC———MY AMMUNITION—–THE MRS NOMAD // MY DOG- ( PIT BULL –BRUTUS ) AND …….” MORE BEER PLEASE ” ——- I DO FEEL FOR ALL THE CRIME AND THE VICTIMS WHO JUST WANT TO LIVE IN A PEACEFUL NEIGHBORHOOD
NOMAD bro.. i am moving to such a place (out rt 82 near geauga-portage line) in the next several weeks).. i am done with the city.. way too easy to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.. 5 years in cleveland heights has changed my worldview.. keeping the property as a rental (near CWRU and the clinic).. it will be a good investment going forward.. but i am gone..i am.. “going to the country”.. you remember canned heat bro ? of course you do.. take a listen to that classic and have a cold rock on uncle buck..
Varejao with 14 pts for Brazil today in a losing effort to make the Olympics. Lost to Germany at the final hurdle. Luka & Slovenia won at Lithuania and Italy upset the Serbs in Belgrade.
Greece is in the other game.
1976 was the first NBA (and ABA) Finals I can remember watching. Dr. J obviously stole the show with his performance, but the NBA Finals was more competitive. I can remember the announcers going on and on about how great a career Havlicek had had. But the triple OT game 5 (with the series tied 2-2), dubbed by many as the greatest game ever played, made me a basketball fan for life. Suns were a scrappy underdog (42-40) vs the Celtics (54-28). Celts had just defeated the Cavs in the Conf semis, while Phoenix had ousted GSW, the defending champs… Read more »
The sequence at the end of the 2nd OT is one of the craziest things I have ever seen.
My dad played hoops in HS and was a Cavs fan, so he was rooting hard for Phoenix & against Boston.
on an aside.. does CLE really need a $500 million JAIL.. i mean i know it is crazy as shit in the ‘land.. i read the police blotter daily.. have neighbors who have been ;jacked at gunpoint (and this is in a “good” neighborhood with expensive homes).. so i get that the problem is huge.. but $500 million on a new jail !! interested to know your views on this issue for our “fair” city.. by the way.. uncle buck is thinking seriously about getting a few new friends.. smith & wesson.. Really happy with this finals match up. Was a huge Barkley fan and stuck with the Suns for a while even after he left. Puffy Suns Starter jacket and all. The first sports heartbreak that I got crushed by was that Paxson game 7 winner. What a gut punch. Fortunately I transitioned to purely Cleveland sports fandom some time after and never had to worry about heartbreak again :)
And if Suns don’t wind up taking it, it’s awesome that it will go to Milwaukee. Win-win.
yup, very happy to see a new team win and analytics darlings Giannis or CP3 getting a ring… real hoopers down bad right now LMFAOOOOOOO
Paxon gane 6 game winner. MJ never played a game 7. Ever.
Oh dang… yup. That doesn’t soften the blow though Jason.
Didn’t think it would. That was a great Finals Series. At the time, I thought Phoenix was going to take them.
There is such a recency bias in sports. We tend to think the most recent great performance or great shot is the greatest. KDs 48. Irving’s winner. Ray Allen’s shot. But that shot Havlicek hits is way tough. And then Heard’s answer after the court gets swarmed and the ref attacked!
Doc’s 45 + game winning buzzee beater in game 1 if the 1976 ABA finals is also nasty.
Congrats bucks.
Really hope Giannis can (safely) play in the Finals. Bucks earned their shot, either way.
Well, Suns have home court. If he is iffy, I’d rest him for game 1 (maybe 2) as well. Game 3 at home down 0-2 is the first must win scenario.
Bucks should just try to play bully ball. Suns have no size after Ayton.
Cool to see Holiday and Middleton carry them through after Giannis went down.
Impressive
This is a potential choke for the ages
Not a choke if you win…
Looks like the choke is averted…quite a campaign by the Hawks though.
These late whistles are so chickens**t. It’s either a foul or it isn’t, it’s not a play on if the shot goes in and a foul if it doesn’t.
That has been NBA refereeing forever.
so glad i did not bet on my prognostication that ATL wins series after game 1.. PHX vs MIL should be a good series..
I’m always glad I didn’t bet
*Another* three from Teague…
Jrue makes some dumb plays at times, but love that dude. Just a winning player.
Lotta turnovers this half…Jrue’s been great…
MIL looking much more self assured. Jrue a big part of that. Taking care of the rock nicely.
Really active on defense, too…on everybody…
Two 3s by Teague, talk about found money…
Trae tends to throw a lot of unbelievably careless passes. I’ve said this before, but it’s like Curry at his absolute worst.
I AGREE WITH WHAT YOU ARE SAYING RAOUL——GOOD INFO IS THE KEY AND I DON’T BELIEVE THE CAVS HAVE THAT AND ALSO ANOTHER BIG IF –ARE THE PLAYERS THEY ARE REALLY AFTER AT 5 AND 8 GOING TO BE THERE —ESPECIALLY AT 8
I can’t wait to “win” the debate when my Mobley piece drops CLF… :)
LMFAOOOO that’s why i took the Cade assignment too!! LMFAOOOO
KOBY ‘DOLL’ DOESN’T NEED TO TRY AND ‘OUTSMART ‘ EVERYONE—-JUST GO WITH THE SURE PICK—-GREEN / MOBLEY AND IF THEY DON’T WORK OUT —WILL GUESS WHAT 28 OTHER GM’S WERE WRONG TOO
I agree that staying at 3 is PROBABLY the smart thing to do. But if you have good info and assessments, there are other options. Unfortunately there is little reason to think the Cavs have that. Potential trade partners mentioned in the PD: Magic (5,8) and GSW (7,14). For example, If I had good reason to think there wasn’t much difference between 3 and 5, and the Magic thought 3 was vastly better than 5, I would trade 3 for 5+8 in a heartbeat. Etc. If this is a good idea or not all boils down to having better info… Read more »
NOMAD bro – the proper name is “kolby ken doll”.. we are in total agreement on KISS.. keep it simple stupid.. this should above on the door to the cavs front office..
Cavs need to draft a guy who can score 17-20/game…no projects; no large developments…they need an immediate scorer…especially if they get rid of Sexton
Virtually every guy in the draft nowadays is a project. Getting guys who are Mikan, Kareem, Wilt, Oscar, West, Baylor, Magic, Bird, Isiah, Shaq, Duncan level guys off the bat is almost unheard of.
Even the most ready can take a bit to lift the franchise. MJ took till his 4th year to crack .500. LeBron in his 2nd. Luka his 2nd.
Or even the few who can get 20 right away have a long way to go in other areas (Zion).
so, will kolby ken doll screw it up ? what are the acceptable options ? the obvious ones (green, mobley, suggs) ? i fear kolby trying to prove that he is a very smart pro who belongs in the “show”, as his record is rather mediocre (at best)..
the obvious ones are the choices.
I’m scared if there’s a trade down, even though I think it’s a viable option, I have no faith Koby will get the right guys picking lower.
Yep. Sit at 3. Take whomever Houston does not.
ANOTHER GREAT JOB CLF——I REALLY LIKE SUGGS / THINK HE WILL HAVE A NICE PRO CAREER —BUT –MAYBE I AM BIASED —MOBLEY // GREEN HAVE THAT “STAR ‘ POTENTIAL ABOUT THEM—-COUNT ME ALL IN ON GREEN OR MOBLEY
Thanks NOMAD!
75% FT for a PG is pretty low. Concerned about the shit & having so many 6’3″ guys who need the ball to be effective.
Not concerned about level of competition. Zags played real games and he was excellent.
Lebron was the same for FT and was a poor shooter his first two years in league…he was the best in driving to basket or a few midrange jumpers, but after being swept by Spurs he had to get better at his mid-range and 3 point shooting which he did…so I’m not entirely concerned about it.
It’s kind of low, but not low enough that I’d say he’s a bad shooter.
I think strength of competition allowing Green to be ranked ahead of Suggs even though I think Suggs has a more well-rounded game.
I’m fine with taking Suggs if Green gets taken ahead. I’d rather have this guy than Mobley. It’s not that I hate other guys, it’s just that I feel Green and Suggs provide that feel of franchise cornerstone rather than part of the rebuilding process. This is what this guy reminds me of as his ceiling… Penny Hardaway. Of course we all wish he could reach that minus the injuries. His floor… Mike Conley. A steady floor general. The guy is a legit point guard with legit playmaking and scoring capabilities (with a jumpshot that has a good foundation… it… Read more »
Although, Penny was a giant 6’7” PG before he got injured. Mobley seems like his ceiling could be the highest, but I could see his offense taking awhile or not reaching that ceiling, especially without a good playmaker to consistently find him on rolls. Unless his outside shot or post game (does have a jump hook, think over left shoulder almost exclusively) develop extremely quickly he may take a longer time to generating consistent offense on his own than the other two. He can provide rim protection and mobility as a big on d for cheap during his rookie contract… Read more »
Mobley doesn’t stand out athletically in his competition. He’s got moves, and abilities and touch but it doesn’t scream total domination in college ball and he’s playing kids who are slower. That’s my fear on him for the pro’s. Although I can be convinced the more I see him play. It might take him longer to adjust in the pro’s.
A lot of good points runningjumper…. I think I still go Mobley over Suggs, but it’s not as clear cut as some might think.
This is who I want the Cavs to take he can fix his shot – his 3 point shot isnt any worse than what Booker was in college or Murray…guys can always fix their shot when they are studs in every other category….Cavs need a guy to run the table and score…obviously Cade is the clear dude but they won’t get him, so this is the next one.
Agreed.
There are some nice bucket getters at the top of the draft.
Wow Bucks with the beatdown? Wonder if Trae or Giannis ever make it back.
Obviously sucks missing Giannis, but it probably helps Lopez’s game…
That is a ridiculous flagrant call.
It’s the letter of the rule, though
To be a foul, sure… but how is that unnecessary contact? He was just jumping to contest a shot. If Middleton misses his foot, that’s not a flagrant.
That is the letter of the law for a flagrant 1. Not saying it’s right or wrong, but it is. Ever since the Zaza play. He was in his landing space.
Good god. I knew there was more of an emphasis to call it a common foul since the Kawhi/Zaza play but didn’t know that was criteria for a flagrant. Harden should draw a flagrant every game if that’s the case then. The pussification of the NBA knows no limits.
Truth.
Calm down. Let’s see you make it from one end of the court down to the other before you bring the tough talk.
Lopez pretty huge tonight…
With Lopez & Portis roaming fairly free, & even Jrue able to score in the paint, it’s hard to see Hawks winning this one.
Just tuned in. Feel like bucks have to get this to win series.
Collins has been awful.
Agreed, then he hits that three…
Big. Heurter also struggling but they are both sticking with it. Heurter’s slick passing there put pressure on Bucks. Can’t see them quitting this game, even though they probably could.
Bucks playing well, but man Hawks are playing pretty incompetently. The real question is whether Jrue/ Khris/ Brook can hold up for 48 minutes.
Feel like this is gonna be a wierrrd game.
Lopez getting his dunk on tonight…
Bobby Portis bringing the energy!
Great start for the Bucks, defending well, and killing it on the boards
Nice writeup. Doubt the Cavs take him, but I loved this dude all year, and hard to imagine him not succeeding in the NBA. Whoever takes him (Cavs included) is going to be pretty happy, most likely.
Yup, I like him… he’s as a complete player as you can possibly be.
Good summary. I’d be fine with Suggs. But eventually we are still undersized even if we keep only one of Sexland. Especially if Okoro is forced to play 3. Trade value for lottery picks will likely always be higher than non superstar young players. So I doubt you get equal return for either or both of Sexland. Think I would rather roll the die with Green or Mobley. People talk about fit being irrelevant at this stage in the cavs rebuild, but in my opinion, Suggs doesn’t seem to be enough of a sure thing franchise changing player over Green… Read more »
Our roster don’t have any resemblance of a identity as a team and coaching philosophy to even think about fit.
It hurts but we are back to square 1 as like every year since LeBron left. We should take the best guy and go from there. A guy we can definitely build around.
Sure but out of those three guys, Suggs is about equal in my mind to the other two. I don’t see him having a higher ceiling than either or being more guaranteed to become a star. They each probably will have different roles and positions. Rather have a wing or SG or versatile big than a PG. So take one of the other two since Suggs doesn’t seem a better prospect to me than either.
That said I wouldn’t hate a Suggs pick. I just would be more ambivalent to it.
Thanks John! If Green or Mobley get drafted they also bring fit issues along with them. I’m in agreement with runningjumper, just take the best player.
