Recap: Cavs 120, Pacers 113 (or, the Poseidon of Lake Erie)
2022-02-12Every game is important at this point of the season. Accordingly, the Cavs were able to scrap and fight their way to author their biggest comeback victory of the season, overcoming a 21 point deficit to defeat the Indiana Pacers 120-113 on the road. The Cavs were able to pull of this astounding feat with some big time offense and timely defense. Let’s dive right into the game’s takeaways…
1. The Poseidon of Lake Erie
The inspiration for the subtitle comes from CtB royalty Tom Pestak, who correctly noted in the Live Thread that reports of Rajon Rondo’s demise were greatly exaggerated, when he took the fork out of his back and launched it like a trident. Stepping up in the absence of Darius Garland, Rondo put together a vintage “Playoff Rondo” performance with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three steals, and a +10 plus/minus in 33 minutes of action. But Rondo’s contributions to the game have always gone beyond the stats. The Rondo lovefest in the post-game presser was replete with stories about his calm demeanor in the face of pressure, even laughing about the Pacers’ first quarter trash talk. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff says that he has the “ultimate” confidence in Rondo from day one, given his résumé as a two-time NBA Champion and 16 years of experience.
The lovefest wasn’t just for Rondo. Rajon also talked about how much he loves being coached by J.B. Bickerstaff, perhaps a subtle jab at his former coach Rick Carlisle, with whom Rondo famously didn’t get along. Rondo also talked about how the young guys on the team relish learning about the game, which Rondo called impressive for their mature approach. Rondo also joked about retirement when reflecting upon his final days as a Los Angeles Laker, and how the Cavs have given him new life. Koby Altman take a victory lap.
2. Caris “the Closer” LeVert
Caris LeVert admitted in the post-game presser that his emotions were running high at the beginning of the game and that it took him a bit to settle down. Facing his old team right after being traded will do that a player. But through the encouragement of the team and J.B., Caris put on a two-way masterclass in the fourth quarter. LeVert locked up his replacement in Chris Duarte on defense, as well as orchestrate the half-court offense down the stretch to perfection. Just like their Brooklyn days, the Cavs asked Caris to run high pick and roll with Jarrett Allen and go to work, and work they did. LeVert said that he was able to continually get to his spot in the midrange due to Indiana playing the same drop coverage on the pick and roll. The one time they blitzed Caris with a double team, it led to unselfish passing and a dunk for Evan Mobley. Tonight’s performance by Caris LeVert is what the Cavs’ envisioned when they acquired him. Not bad for his fourth day on the job!
3. The kids stepped up.
After a 47 point first quarter, in which the Pacers were shooting like they were throwing rocks into Lake Erie, the Cavs played three more quarters of grind. Then, Isaac “Ice” Okoro and Evan “the Professional” Mobley stepped up their defense big time in the fourth to protect the waters and secure the victory. Ice had two blocks and also chipped in three assists, while posting a team-high +11 plus/minus. Mobley had three blocks, two steals, and slammed the door on the Pacers with his slam and steal. It’s hard not to make a big deal about the kids’ unselfishness and desire to win. In a league that’s hyper-focused on individual talents, these kids for the Cavs are built differently. They don’t care about the hype, they don’t care about the outside noise. They are driven to win, and they’re willing to do the dirty work to get the job done.
4. Quick note on the Pacers
After seeing the new look Pacers, it’s obvious that they got much quicker and athletic with their revamped roster. Even though they lost, they have to be pleased with many aspects of the game. Acquiring Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield were great moves that are paying immediate dividends. A name to watch in the future is rookie Isaiah Jackson from the University of Kentucky. Oshae Brissett gave the Pacers some great defense and shooting. According to Pacer fans, there’s a feeling of rejuvenation with the team. The pro-Central Division agenda is only getting stronger.
5. Standings check
6. Next up, the City of Brotherly Love
The Cavs will fly by night to Philadelphia to take on the Sixers in the second game of a back to back for both teams. Luckily for the Cavs, DG’s load management should help the cause. James Harden could also be making his Philadelphia debut, so the game will have extra hype for the home crowd. The Cavs and Sixers have yet to face off this year, and will have to play each other four times over the course of the next two months to close the season. In a twist of fate, all four of these games have taken on tremendous import due to both teams’ desire to stay in the race for the Eastern Conference’s top seed. So, hire the babysitter, do all the chores, the Cavs vs. Sixers is must-see basketball… GO CAVS!

Noice!
We’d be 2.5 games up on Philly with a win. Tiny bit of separation.
What do you guys think Philly’s medical staff will say about Harden’s hamstring?
A. What hamstring? He’s fine. (Makes him look like a liar for saying he was hurt with Nets).
B. He is actually hurt and needs a another week to get ready. (Validates earlier injury, but cannot play in ASG).
C. He is hurt but almost ready. Needs a couple more days. (Validates earlier injury but can play in ASG).
I’m hoping he fails his physical and blows both teams up!!! LMFAOOOOO
I had this thought as well – we would all eat that up!!
right. that will be fun to watch!
I’m hoping he’s out until after AS break and Allen can take his spot on the AS game.
You love to see it.

inject this tweet into Tom’s veins!!!
IS THERE A WAY WE CAN REMOVE “FLAT EARTH ” KYRIE OFF THAT LIST ——JUST SEEMS TO TAINT// DISHONOR THE OTHER MEMBERS ON THE LIST
Irving is 8th on that list. The tweet had them in order.
Love is 1,231 points behind him. At his present rate of scoring (14.4), Love would pass Irving in 86 more games. Sometime next year if all goes well.
Sexton has 4,356. If he extends here, he probably catches him on the next contract in year 3. Maybe 4. If he stays healthy, DG should top 3,000 this year. I cannot see Mobley wearing anything other than wine & gold for a long time.
No way man. He’s an odd guy for sure, but I’ll never forget the shot, and how he helped get that title.
Co-sign, also Kyrie’s still in his 20s, hopefully not done growing and learning.
Thankfully he wasn’t as publicly/outwardly weird during his time in CLE as he is now – his time during LeBron 2.0 era was super fun and he was always my fav player to watch on that championship team
he may require some medication in the not too future..

Yeah, Kevin Love is a Cleveland Cavalier and hopefully will retire here. His apparent emotional resurgence is maybe the best thing to watch, though those pump fake, three point in your face, timely charge drawing, tough rebound, full court outlet pass moments are pretty damn cool to watch too.
He found his edge again…. got damn makes me so happy! He’s gotta be over the moon!
Great cap, Chris.
Just some more stuff on being 1st in the division (knock on wood). LeBron James led Cavs teams won the division six times (2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). Their has been exactly ONE non-LeBron Cavs team to win the division: the 1975-76 Miracle of Richfield Cavs of Austin Carr, Jim Chones, Campy Russell, Nate Thurmond (HOF), and Bingo Smith. Coached by the dearly departed Bill Fitch.
Though some of those great 80’s/90’s teams had to deal with the Bad Boy Pistons and some guy named Jordan.
There. Not their. Yikes.
Thanks as always Jason!!!
WOW, some great historical perspective there!
interesting to contemplate LBJ thoughts looking at the standings.. i am sure a lot of 2nd guessing regarding many issues and teams.. but you know his eyes keep coming back to the cavs way up the list 1 game out of 1st.. 13 wins last 16 games..
Ooops! We did it again!
Thanks for the recap; really great feel good game for the cavs and their fans =)
You’re welcome, and thanks as always TOJ! Go Cavs!

Did TT hurt DG’s back with that hug?
I think he’s faking. I hope so.
Great recap, Chris.
Thank you Coach!!!
interesting recap from indy perspective.. on indy cornrows sitePacers final score: Cavaliers close out Pacers 120-113Despite a 47-point first quarter, Indiana struggled to keep pace late, falling to Cleveland for the second time in a week. Tyrese Haliburton had 23 points and six assists in his impressive debut.

NOMAD bro.. correct me if i am wrong.. you were a big-time trash talker back in the day when you laced up those chuck taylor high tops, right ??
Thank you NOMAD as always!
Yup, great point… can’t wait to see DG/Lauri even Sexton back!
Hahaha love that title image!!
Seriously has anyone done a public service and tweeted videos if those Rondo 3s to Lakers fan?
LMFAOOO thanks for the inspiration Tom!
Tom, when you have free time and a chance, check out Lakers’ Twitter Spaces audio post-game losses… it’s Lakers’ cope/slander heaven!
Well done on the recap, Chris! I am loving the title and the Rondo resurgence. The other striking (perhaps even explosive? it’s been a while) thing about the standings is that after the win in Indy, Cavs are now first place in Central Division. That status itself is quite a close shave — JB’s Cavs are identical to the Bulls in record, are 1-1 in their head-to-head matchups w/ Chicago, and like Chicago, the Cavs 7-3 in games vs. Central Division opponents. But the Cavs have a slightly better winning percentage (64.5%) vs. Eastern Conference than the Bulls (63.8%), so… Read more »
Thank you as always Adam! I’m good friends with a couple of Bulls fans, can’t wait to talk smack this spring!!!!
