new post up!
SOUNDS AS IF CAVS ARE VERY INTERESTED IN DIENG———–NOMAD HAS TALKED HIM UP ALOT ——-WE SHALL SEE
Stephen A: “And [Kyrie Irving] thinks that he deserves a four-year extension, fully loaded on top of the $36.5 million dollars. I mean what nerve, what gal. Talk about delusional, I mean that’s this dude, that’s Kyrie Irving…Did you know that this brother right here Kyrie Irving, would conduct his own practices. So Steve Nash had the team on the floor practicing. They would finish and he’d go and get five guys and conduct his own practice! You have any idea how disrespectful that is to the players, you how disrespectful that is to Steve Nash. He conducted his own… Read more »
The Nets gleefully signed up for the Kyrie ride…and he’s going to give it to them, good and hard.
he told the nets to assume the position.. and they did.. one must always be careful about what one wishes for.. the hegelian dialectic will not be cheated..
KJG HAS JUMPED ABOARD “THE DIENG TRAIN ” ALSO—- I HONESTLY DON’T THINK HE WILL BE THERE AT 14—BELIEVE ANOTHER TEAM WILL ” ROLL THE DICE ” BEFORE CAVS HAVE A CHANCE TO
yes he’s local NE Ohio guy and played for buckyes but Branham would be a great fit for this team. I think he was held back a lot at OSU due to horrific coaching and lack of playmakers outside of Liddell and even then if not for Branham I don’t know how Buckeyes win even half their games. I really dont know much about the other guys, but Cavs need a guy who can score to begin with 12-16 points/game and then develop into a 20/game scorer. The NBA is offense…why is GS good all these years? They got shooters… Read more »
yes.. they need buckets.. from the outside
For the last year or so I have heard an occasional opinion that the 22 draft class is unusually weak. Lately I have also seen opinions that the 23 draft class looks to be exceptional.
Anyone buying either of these?
So glad Kyrie is the Nets problem. Most annoying NBA player of my lifetime. And with all that, he’s never going to take a team anywhere on his own.
haha! and now it appears he wants to grab hitch his wagon to LeBron’s coattails.
Trading down also an option, but hopefully not too far. I’d do it for a first. Though I think that chatter is primarily to try and convince Charlotte (with 13 & 15) to use #13 on a big and not a wing. As is, the Hornets, who need a big, feel there is no way Cleveland takes Duren or Mark Williams at 14. We need wings. So it makes sense for them to pick the wing player at 13, and then the big at 15. The Cavs would much rather they go big 1st. If there is a possibility the… Read more »
go big or go home.. it has been said.. as a general proposition, talent is near infinitely more valuable than “fit”.. look at recent cavs sub-par actions.. okoro.. windler.. if you can take a great talent.. take it, and deal with fit from a position of strength down the road.. mediocrity is omnipresent.. throw a dart..
I get where you are coming from, but I disagree, vehemently. Just look at Westbrook (fit), and Kyrie/KPJ (talent) for the counterpoints.
So, if the Cavs had moved up to top 4 (say 2nd or 3rd), your strategy would be to take Holmgren or Banchero and figure it out later with how they would work with Allen & Mobley?
Best player is for football. Or for situations where the cupboard is bare of high end talent or the guy you are drafting is so superior you clear the decks after you trade him. At 14, with DG & Mobley & Allen, neither of those things is true.
Going big (for me) would be trying to use the pick (plus Sexton/LeVert) to try and move up to take Daniels/Sharpe (big talent swings), or even Murray or Mathurin.
If we are gonna keep Sexton & LeVert around, then I want Agbaji because I then we have too many guys who need the ball to be effective.
If we are going to jettison one (or both), then I want Branham’s playmaking.
I have come around on J. Williams as a nice 3rd option.
WB —-I GUESS HOMETOWN KID BRANAHAM IS PREFERENCE–PLUS HE IS YOUNGER// THINK HE HAS MORE UPSIDE —-OBAJI PROBABLY HAS MORE IMMEDIATE IMPACT ——STILL ON THE “EASON ” TRAIN——–IF CAVS WOULD MAKE A TRADE DOWN—-DO YOU THINK WILLIAMS OR TERRY ARE STILL THERE —–DEPENDING ON WHAT WE WOULD GET IN A TRADE —I AM VERY SATISFIED WITH WILLIAMS OR TERRY
Most mocks seem to have us taking either Branham or Ogbaji at 14. Anybody vastly prefer one to the other?
Two different types of players, who each bring some things we need. Branham needs the ball in his hands more, and is gonna provide more playmaking. He could possibly even play some PG. Provides some threat as a spot up shooter as well. Has good length but is skinny. I see him as more of a combo guard. I do not think he can play/guard 3s and is not a great defender yet. Agbaji isn’t either, but he is bigger & stronger. More able to guard 3s, though still not that long for a 3. He is gonna play without… Read more »
Branham over Agbaji easily… you get the shooting plus the on ball offensive creation and he’s 3 years younger, there’s offensive star upside with Branham.
Keen followers of this commentariat may remember that my daughter has a Lake Erie sized crush on Isaac Okoro. Thought I’d share my end-of-school-year present to her with you all.
Now, if he can only start attacking the rim with as much skill as he delivers shout-outs…
Ha! That’s awesome.
I still have hope for Okoro. He has not had a “regular” off-season yet. His shooting numbers have improved some. And, I *think* some of his advanced stats (box plus minus, on/off) show we do better with him out there.
He’s a very good finisher. 65% at the rim this year.
Hey, I know this is gonna sound crazy, but what if the Cavs could get involved as a third team in a big deal? Kyrie may be at an impasse with the Nets. The Lakers are in jail with Russ. We have one guy making $19 mil or so that I am not enthralled with as a player (LeVert), and Sexton wants that kind of money. If there was significant other assets involved (1st round pick(s), player/prospects), would you be willing to eat Russ’ contract for a year? We do need PG help. Garland could play off ball. We aren’t… Read more »
No thank you on Russ, unless they’re gonna land a decade’s worth of first round picks LMFAO
Although if the Cavs can act as a third party to help get Russ to Boston, I’m okay with it…
LMFAOOOO MikeO always willing to lend a hand to our friends the Boston Celtics!
Happy Father’s Day and Happy 6-19 guys!! Never forget!!

Hey Chris, I’m Elie (Eli) from the basketball court. My twitter is @ESGIV20
Hey Elie!!! Great meeting you, will follow back now!
Bizarrely, Kenny Atkinson now staying with GS as lead assistant and not taking the Hornets job. Makes one think he was give some sort of promise by GS.
I think Kenny is smart to pass on the gig, even if Kerr stays. He deserves a shot to coach adults after his previous stop. Either way, the lead assistant on the Dubs has certainly been a great jumpstart for the previous guys, and yeah, if Kerr does decide nine championships are enough, he would be a great choice to take over.
Apparently Atkinson and family love the Bay area. But it does make you wonder if Kerr will ride out the Curry/ Klay/ Dray era and then have Atkinson take over the tounger guys.
I always wanted him coaching the Cavs, even though that seems a pipe dream now.
CONGRATS SIMMMO –HOPE YOU TOOK ‘ADVANTAGE ‘ OF THE TIME—–THE MRS NOMAD AND I RARELY HAVE ‘DATE ‘ NIGHT DUE TO WE ARE ALWAYS WATCHING GRANDKIDS SO OUR KIDS CAN HAVE “DATE NIGHT ———” MORE BEER PLEASE” :-)
Love to see Bogie on the Cavs. Consumate pro.
Re: pitches – had a rare date night with kids at babysitters last night. We went to see Top Gun 2. Action sequences, particularly from Mav’s 2:15 test run, were great. The rest was a carbon copy of the 1st movie, an expensive stroll down Lane Sentimentality. Would have preferred to stay in the foyer, sipping a nice red while judging young adult fashion as it strolled by. 5/10.
LMFAOOO nice review Simmo!
Never cared for the first one, not planning on watching this one. But for those who watched it and love it, glad it’s there for them. Thanks for the ‘review’. :D
Even GMs are morons when it comes to guys who “can get their own shot”. If the Cavs are more serious about winning than fan optics, they will soon part ways with LeVert and Sexton. Gary Payton II just led the Playoffs in TS % and DBPM. Without media really internalizing how basketball works, he was one of the best players in the Finals. Decision making matters. How many times did Gary make an extra pass, screen, cut, rotation, etc?. The guy was an absolute coach’s dream. Defense matters. Contrast that with Collin Sexton, who has never been a truly… Read more »
“Never be a slave to previous mistakes”.. perfect.. i will use that one.. thx
If Altman re-signs both Sexton and LeVert he should be immediately fired, but I don’t see any way that happens. I don’t like Sexton at 20+ mill, for sure, but I’d be okay at $15 mill. I seriously doubt any team is going to throw much more than that at him as a RFA. If someone like Detroit does, maybe either match for a year, otherwise wish him well.
The Sexton conversation the last few years has been absolutely exhausting.
Why do people like him at 15 million? Just because it isn’t the Max? He isn’t worth 15 million either. I agree with players like the Martins and DiVincenzo being rated ahead of him. He has had his moments, but he is a 6 foot shooting guard who can’t defend. All those other 6th men types can create their own shot and create for others if they suck as hard as Collin does defensively. Collin can only get his, and seemingly only in transition or while being spoonfed by Delly. I don’t want him on the team, period. If on… Read more »
I’m not a fan of his game, at least his game as displayed to this point. But what if he really started to lean into catch and shoot threes, and developed a reliable step back three? Also, he could lean into a lot more cutting off ball…I could see that being a pretty good offensive player. He was doing a little more cutting off ball before he got hurt this season, although that was a tiny sample size. The question, of course, is who are they going to get at $15 mill who’s better? Or even as good? I’m all… Read more »
nevertheless it is quite possible these guys can be used in trades.
Great takes! 100%. We need people who can see the court and anticipate where the action is going. Both LeVert and Sexton are always behind the play, and don’t “see” the whole court, which is why they are so turnover prone and poor team defenders.
so, ctb gurus.. i want to know your best trade(s) the cavs can make to better the team.. type 1 trade does NOT involve #14.. type 2 DOES include #14.. proceed..
THINK THIS DRAFT IS GOING TO HAVE SOME SURPRISES AFTER THE 1ST 7-8 PICKS
I have a feeling the 2nd round is really gonna tick me off again, as I think all the guys I like there will get gobbled up before we pick at 39, but some would have been there at 34 (Moore, Braun, Nembhard, Koloko, McGowans, LaRavia).
so you think that six guys that will be there at 34 will all be gone by 39?
No. Reading comprehension not your strong suit, eh?
Some will be gone before 34.
Some will be gone after 34.
All will be gone before 39.
Hence, if we had 34, we have gotten one.
That’s what “some would have been there at 34” means.
If you are gonna be a smart@$$, don’t be a dumb@$$ first.
Just here to peek in after the Jalen Williams news broke.
Cavs are not going to ignore CtB!
At their peril….

Well, I have optimism the Cavs CAN improve, but the top of the East is gonna be rough.
Top tier: Bucks, Heat, Celtics
Middle: 76ers, Nets
PO Hunt: Bulls, Raptors, Cavs, Hawks, Hornets
Borderline: Pacers
Rebuilding: Magic, Pistons, Wizards, Knicks
Very happy to wake up today and ponder that Al Horford doesn’t have a championship, and most likely never will. Because eff that guy.
And his sister. He’ll always have the glory of game 1 to bask in.
Congrats to the Warriors for making a good player out of Andrew Wiggins. I doubt anyone else in the league thought 2 years ago, “let’s turn Wiggins into a defensive-first off ball player”. Steve Kerr and his staff had all the answers for Boston.
Celtics had no bench and the starters just wore out, I think. Not sure what happened to Derrick White and Grant Williams, but they were not ready to play in a finals series.
Kerr is a much better coach than Bud. And GSW’s offense plays so much smarter, even if a little loose with the ball at times. They put at lot more pressure on the other team’s offense. Against Miami & Milwaukee, those games were brick fests, the D kept em in it. Versus GSW, if you go cold for a stretch, you are likely in a hole.
But I have to say, I do not think Biston beats the Bucks if Middleton is healthy, nor the Heat if Herro/Butler were. Yes, I know Williams & Smart had issues too.
Draymond Green still suck and the Warriors are frauds!
The Warriors blew a 3-1 lead forever and ever greatest collapse of a team of all time brought to them by one the best and most legit teams in the 2016 Cavaliers!!
Delly > Curry #facts
THATS RIGHT RJ!!!
And gsw owns the cavs 3-1 for finals match up.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/1537638830425223168?s=20&t=Gi8Ib_0pWKv0uCm_v6ftow
Let’s not cheapen 2015-2016 by comparing this team to those warriors. Those Cavs would have mopped the floor with this team. Despite Curry, Klay, Draymond, those guys aren’t the same and the bench isn’t the same. Klay is a hollow shell. That bench was absurd as far as greater than sum of parts. Curry is still great but probably not at that level, despite having a better finals against a lesser d. This team is a shell of those teams and nowhere near the match for those cavs. This year and last year there were no great teams. Just good… Read more »
This is why i still shake my head at Kyrie being a douche and not accepting secondary role with Lebron and those two just dominating the East like Jordan’s Bulls for an 8 year period. I still believe if those two stayed, Cavs win at least 2 more titles maybe 3. The Warriors just stuck together long enough and took advantage of a chaotic East conference at right time.
agree. there are lots of reasons why it is hard to hold a great team together for long.
https://twitter.com/oldseaminer/status/1537637274657120257?s=20&t=606Hic3UE4hyIguKc-S-eQ
Curry will get the FMVP that he deserved before this.
This Celtics team probably gets swept if not for Robert Williams.
Wiggins dagger.
Celtics are so dumb. Marcus smart is the worst DPOY maybe ever.
No maybe required…
If the Warriors close this, maybe guys like Windhorst can stop saying in exasperated tones that ‘the Celtics are the better team!’. That crap is getting real old. The Celtics turn it over like it’s their job. They are very consistent about that. They have not been the better team by a long shot.
They can literally only a play 6 deep. Dubs bench vastly superior.
wow.. i thought the celtics could make it a suspense, or perhaps a drama.. looks like a comedy.. nice, the demoralization should be significant.. i love when self-doubt becomes like a cancer.. sometimes uncle buck just needs to be uncle buck..and the collapse is in the gahdon.. sublime.. as dear john sang.. “don’t let me down.. don’t let me down”
Robert Williams is definitely the MVP of this Celtics team. Not really close.
Oh man Portnoy sitting court side? Def wanna see Boston get shredded
Amen to that!!! LMFAO
I know Bill Simmons is at the game. Hope he’s enjoying this Curry exhibition.
time for GS to put a fork in BOS.. they are done.. let’s move on.. if BOS loses, which i guess looks likely at this point (54-29 at the half).. east has some decent teams, but none are extraordinary.. and GS has shown that they are mere mortals as well.. the cavs have the opportunity to grow and excel with effort and some shrewd FO management.. looking forward to the draft.. interesting trade involving DAL and HOU.. DAL won that one i think.. should we try to trade for quiche ?
No super teams currently which is a change from the last half decade. Feels more like the 90s or early 2000s where you had 1-2 stars and great role players. NJ was supposed to be one but they couldn’t put it together. There is parody. I don’t think there was a truly great team last year either.
Of course there could be a super team that pops up randomly, but probably not like the KD era warriors which was due to a cap jump.
That was a Collin Sexton level fastbreak 1 v 4 from Tatum.
I love the narrative that the Celtics were going to stop complaining to the officials. SSDD as expected. Tatum acts like a spoiled 12 year old out there, every game.
The Bucks have to ne thinking, where was this guy?
The book in him is make him drive into traffic (preferably left). Can’t let him shoot jumpers.
I was constantly cursing all playoffs. Don’t. Let. Him. Shoot. Threes. Make him put the ball on the effing floor. Only Miami did it at all before this series. Bucks just let him shoot, which was moronic. Probably cost them the series, just that strat alone.
Make all of these bums put the ball on the floor. Most of them can barely dribble. They just want to shoot threes.
Man I hate Boston. I’m just going to pretend the other team is Phoenix or something.
😂
21-0 run.
This is Rockets brick streak in game 7 or OKC meltdown in game 6 bad.
I am totally fine with Boston getting humiliated.
As a Cavs fan, I hope they get so shook it carries over to next year.
Crowd not so loud now. Wonder why.
Smart rewarded for his first two flops of the night. GG, NBA.
Nauseating
“RETURNING ” THE LOVE TO YOU JASON——-YOU ARE COREECT IN WE NEED SHOOTERS——-JUST ENAMORED WITH EASON ATHLETICISM// NBA BODY ALREADY// HIGH MOTOR// DEFENSE ——–WOULD HOPE —-( AND AM STILL HOPING ON ICE )—-THE SHOT WOULD EVENTUALLY COME

Hey Adam!!! Thank you and that’s right! All aboard the Buck Train!!!
ROCKETS ARE MAKING SOME GOOD MOVES
NOMAD bro.. just discovered a publically-traded company you might be interested in..ticker symbol is NOMD.. Nomad Foods.. i see a future in advertising if they diversify into brewing..
IF —–EASON IS STILL THERE AT 14 —I AM ALL IN FOR HIM—-BUT DOUBT HE WILL BE THERE —-SAME WITH DYSON OR SOCHAN —–GUESS AFTER THAT WE ARE LOOKING AT POSSIBLY DAVIS// BRANHAM//AGBAJI// WILLIAMS—-MY LONG SHOT -DIENG OR TERRY IS STARTING TO GET MY INTEREST
I think if Davis is there, they should take him. I like those other guys, too, but Davis would seem the smartest play.
I love you NOMAD! And I get the appeal. And I am normally a fit guy, but I just don’t think we need another guy who cannot shoot or score. I mean, Allen, Mobley, Okoro, Stevens + Rubio + another?
Though we badly need some wing length. I go the other direction, take the combo guard or SG types (Branham, Davis, Agbagi) & try to clear the decks by trading Sexton or LeVert. And/or try to trade up and get a longer guy to play SF/PF.
I don’t like guys with hair like Kuzma, either, but I really like Sochan’s game.
Just heard Nate’s line about Sochan’s FT %. Agree, it needs to improve, but he has a form issue at the line. Check out where his feet are when he’s shooting free throws. Really awkward looking stance. I’m sure that can be fixed.
FWIW, NBA Green Room invites. Now, they do miss sometimes, but do talk to GM’s before sending them out.
First 11: Smith, Holmgren, Banchero, Ivey, Murray, Mathurin, Daniels, Sharpe, Duren, Griffin, Davis.
Next 5: Dieng, Sochan, Agbaji, Mark Williams, Branham.
Last 4: Washington, Eason, Jalen Williams, Beauchamp.
Another Trade.
Mavs Trade #26 and spare parts on expirings (Chriss, Sterling Brown, Trey Burke, and Boban (noooooo!)) for Chris Wood.
Great move by Houston. They have Sengun for cheaper and almost certainly take a big at #3.
Meanwhile, Dallas seriously upgraded at C and gave Luka sone scoring help.
Win. Win.
Houston has #3, #17, and #26 now.
not a bad way to look at it!
Good podcast, guys. I only got thru the draft part.
Gitta get to Stranger Things.
Hell yeah Jason thanks checking it out as always!
Thanks for doing it. Good discussion. Especially on the draft. Cavs in a bit of a pickle.
Lot of the guys in our range are more combo guards (Davis, Branham) or SG/SF types who are a tad small for a full time 3 (Griffin, Agbaji). Though they all have goid length. The bigger guys cannot shoot (Eason, Sochan, Dieng, Beauchamp).
I have to admit, after hating it initially, I am kinda warming to the Jalen Williams idea. Though I worry about his D, especially at that level.
I think Eason is a no brainer pick among the 4 you mentioned, but there’s been rumors that he’s interviewing badly and I think the Cavs care too much about that kind of stuff.
Glad to have you on the Jalen Williams Agenda, I think it’s the “safe” pick but also has a lot of potential upside too in terms of offensive ceiling.
I am worried about his rebounding, usually an indication of a lack of conditioning or physicality. But outside of that, he’s the total package as a player.
Agree on the fences thing. We don’t need a fences guy. Garland & Mobley are your fences guys. Allen is an all-star.
Agree on the 2 of 3 thing. Pass/Create, shoot, defend. Not big on undersized 3s either.
Yes, Allen, Mobley, and Finnish are tall, but the rest of the team is undersized.
To me, upside is what you talk about when guys haven’t produced yet. It is why they bust so much. If the guy is productive, you talk about that.
A will say, we do need PG help. Even if we bring Ricky back. Plus Garland can play off-ball some.
I’d have no issue picking Chandler.
We already have 5 guys whose best spot is SG (Sexton, LeVert, Okoro, Cedi, Windler). Do we need another?
I tend to agree on the production thing. But Giannis would be the counter.
Giannis isn’t a counter example… at age 20 he put up 15/10 and 2.3 stocks per 36 for Greece in FIBA World Cup competition…. even shot nearly 80% from the free throw line until Milwaukee screwed up his jump shot.
He was insanely productive early in his basketball life.
Wait, what?
I gotta call BS on that, on a couple levels.
1) Using per 36 numbers for production. He averaged 6.3/4.3 on 48% shooting. I know it is Europe, but still.
2) He put these numbers up at age 20, in 2014. He was drafted in 2013, at 19. Seriously Chris, using stats from AFTER a guy was drafted to justify your own idea about drafting players based on production? Come on.
We should do any Sexton deal we can get.
He’s an undersized 2 who plays no D and has tunnel vision. And cannot shoot triples off the dribble.
Paying him $18 mil is insane.
agreed re 18m, especially when the Cavs have all the leverage.
You guys get why Hollinger got fired?
Grizz took off after he left.
THANKS GUYS —–WHEW JUST GOT DONE MOWING// GOT UP AT 5;30 TO “BEAT THE HEAT ‘ —-” MORE FRIGGIN BEER PLEASE ” !!!!——HAS ANYONE HEARD ARE WE RETAINING ” HOLY ‘ MOSES BROWN —-ARE WE GOING TO PURSUE ‘ HARD ROCK ‘—-I WOULD LOVE TO SEE ‘ HARD ROCK” BACK IN A CAVS UNIFORM !!!—–STAY COOL EVERYONE !!!!
Brown is an RFA so presumably the Cavs can keep him if they wanted to.
Don’t think Hard Rock’s leaving Ty Lue, its been reported he loves it out in LA and Lue was the “first coach” who believed in him.
My power has been out about 90% of the last two days in Columbus. Likely to be out much of tomorrow, too. Just came on tonight at about 10PM, we’ll see how much they allow us before the next planned outage.
Actual quote from AEP Ohio:
“Do not, my friends, become addicted to electricity. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence!”
right. especially in places not suitable for human existence with out it. e.g., if there is ever an extended outage in Phoenix or Los Vegas in July or August, there will be mass casualties.
Love to get Hard Rock back. Holy Mo is more of a question mark, but I would keep him and see if he can make the team.
