Open Thread: The 2022 NBA Draft
2022-06-23Good afternoon/evening, CtB!
Tonight’s the night, the 2022 NBA Draft. At the time of this writing, the Cavs will have four selections to upgrade their roster, but there is rampant speculation that the Cavs are loading up to make moves. Most recently, there’s solid evidence that the Cavs are looking to jump into the top 10, trade back, or possibly trade back into the 1st round with their collection of 2nd round picks. The excitement is off the charts in anticipation for how the Cavs will upgrade the roster between now and next’s week free agency frenzy.
Also as I wrote in this story explaining the deal, as a result of today's trade with Kings for the No. 49 pick, #Cavs have around $4 million more in cash to send out in trades — or to use to buy a draft pick if so inclined.https://t.co/hsWMxH97mO

Peachtree Hoops has the best scouting report I’ve seen for Diop. Link for those interested:

Not that they mean much, but this guy at CBS gave us an A+ for the Agbaji pick.
C on Diop. But did not hate the flier.
A- for Mobley.
C+ for Travers.

Think the Pacers would give us Brogdon straight up for Sexton?
They have Haliburton, Hield, Duarte, Mathurin, TJ McConnell, drafted Nembhard, and have another PG on a non-guaranteed deal.
They are probably looking for bigs. But Haliburton/Sexton could work.
I’d be worried about Brogdon staying on the court. He seems to have lost some of his shooting touch too.
Brogdan is also making north of $21 mill. Would have to weigh a Brogdan at $21+ mill who plays half of the games every year, or Sexton.
I guess it’s easy to forget too that Sexton probably hasn’t topped out his potential yet. He’s only one year older than Ochai hahahahahah
If we sign Sexton now we’re buying his prime. I would bet in his age 26/27 seasons he’s probably a net positive player
I’m mostly overreacting but are we sure Koby is good at drafting? He mostly missed on Sexton when SGA and the Bridges went right after. He def gets credit for Darius but whiffed on his other two firsts that year. It’s still tbd on Okoro and that draft was pretty bad but could have reasonably had Halliburton. Mobley is obviously a home run but any of us would have made the same pick. So that’s two hits in spots where it’s almost impossible to miss, with 3 (mostly) misses and one TBD.
It is a valid question.
I will say, while I agree that Mobley was an easy pick , I think full credit should be givenon Garland. Especially after taking Collin the year before.
I will say that anyone who was modeling their team building on the Blazers (Lillard/McCollum) because of all their success (past first round once/twice) does not inspire a lot of confidence that they know how to build a team (2 small guards almost never works).
Yeah I think Garland is the only very clear win he has. At least as far as the draft. Obviously he gets huge credit for Allen.
Recall the CtB consensus at the time:
Most everyone was against picking Garland because of the “two small guards” issue. I kept putting in my $0.02 worth about not repeating the blunder of “not picking Lillard because we already had KI”. That is how we got St. Wierdo.
The majority was also appalled at the extension for Jarrett Allen. How is that looking now?
How about the general gnashing of teeth about trading for and extending Lauri?
A lot of people seem to have an axiom that Koby is an idiot, and twist the facts to fit.
IMO he doesn’t get credit for Darius because John Beilein was here and recruited that class of KPJ and DG. But also I’m a massive hater LMFAOOO Also funny that KPJ played his best ball under Beilein and hasn’t replicated the same two way success since.
KPJ was obviously a flyer that didn’t fly. If it had, it would have been a steal. I’m not counting that as a miss.
It is also hard to count Okoro as a miss this early. Might turn out to be, or maybe not. He has not exactly exploded from the gate but he has shown flashes of being pretty decent.
Watched some Ogjabi highlights and dude is pretty lights out spot up shooter especially in corners…again highlights only tell parts of the story but really think this dude may supplant Okoro if the latter cant consistently score points.
Does anyone think the market for Sexton shrunk last night?
The Pistons got Ivey & Kemba.
The Pacers drafted Nembhard.
I was always kind of surprised anybody thought there was a market for him. Not in RFA anyways. A team would have to be willing to tie up $20 mil in cap space which the Cavs would be likely to match. Although I guess there could be sign and trade interest.
Agreed… also, given how the Cavs drafted, I think they’re counting on Sexton as backup PG.
😰
I am terrified that you are 100% correct.
I try not to judge too harshly until FA plays out, and if trades are made, but I am not thrilled at using 2 2nd round picks on bigs you don’t expect to roster (this year). So we STILL have a hole at backup C, and only 1 PG on the roster.
If we bring Rubio back, that eats up the MLE, and he won’t be ready until 2023. That keans vet mins at backup PG and C.
It’s gonna be a lot of Levert and Sexton dribbling lol
100% agree LMFAOOO

I posted this below, but I don’t expect him to ever play in the NBA. Congrats to him getting drafted, though.
We drafted a guy between 6’6″ and 6’9″!
Do we even think he comes to summer league?
Diop apparently will be at summer league, doubt Travers will be.
Nice post Nate!
Here’s hoping:
DG, Agbagi, Big Finnish, EMobes, JA.
???, LeVert, Okoro, Wade, Love.
???, Osman, Windler, Stevens, ???
Two way: I. Mobley, Goodwin?
We sign & trade Sexton (or LeVert) for something, either a legit PG who can play until Rubio is healthy, a legit SF, or backup big.
I hope they keep Okoro starting at the 2. Need to figure out if he’s a viable starter.
Makes sense.
I think the Cavs probably start LeVert, though.
Ugh that’s probably right. I just don’t think Levert is a winning player. Oh geeze I’m being a real downer!
We are in 100% agreement on Caris. I feel the same about Sexton.
So much so I could *almost* be talked into trading both for 1 year of Westbrook if we got 2 firsts in 2027 and 2029. And a player.
However, I think the Cavs want to see what LeVert/Sexton can do with this core. We were 7-4 with Sexton last year.
