Live Thread: Hawks @ Cavs

The Cavs welcome the Atlanta Hawks to the shores of Lake Erie for their final In Season Tournament group game. Thanks to some folks in Cavs’ Twitter this is where things stand:
As for what to expect on the court, the Hawks are one of the best offensive teams in the NBA. They are conversely one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA. This is a prime opportunity for the Cavs to get their crappy offense right, and concurrently a strong test for their middling defense. The Hawks are top three in the NBA in offensive rebounding, so the Cavs defensive rebounding, which to this point has been garbage, will be tested. It would behoove the Cavs to attack the glass on offense themselves, given how the Hawks are somehow a worse defensive rebounding team than the Cavs (ranked 26th in the NBA).

Sadly Dean Wade will be out again, which is a big blow to the Cavs’ defense. Caris LeVert apparently is a very fickle player, as he is simultaneously both part of the best and worst two man lineups the Cavs run out there. As far as net rating data goes, Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen really need to get their shit together. CavsDan is spending over a quarter billion dollars on these two players, and so far he (and the fans) is not getting his money’s worth. What can Coach JB Bickerstaff do to jump start this team? How about more Donovan Mitchell at the point guard with Caris LeVert at the two guard. As one can plainly see from the five man lineup data, the triumvirate of Donovan Mitchell, Caris LeVert, and Max Strus is an extremely powerful one… it would behoove Bickerstaff use those lineups more liberally if DG and JA keep languishing. Both guys are at game 13 for the season, it’s time to put the big boy pants on and play like the All-Stars they have been.

A win tonight gets us into the top 6, as Miami & Indy play each other.
We are close to fully healthy (Wade). The next goal has to be run down the Mia/Ind winner & the Knicks. Then Orlando.
Probably goal for the year is a three seed and a slightly easier first round matchup. Only a few games out and I expect Orlando to come down a bit.

Really like the games that were added to the schedule for us: Orlando at home on three days rest and then at Miami. A real chance to make up some ground in the East and to test a healthy squad against playoff contenders.
Went to the game tonight. Mobley made me look stupid for griping about him earlier today. He really dominated on defense. Hawks looked terrible. Trae and Murray combining for 26. Really fun game from the home squadron. No complaints
SAC v GSW game is fun. The usual Dray antics and a sense that there is a changing of the guard. Fox is electric to watch. Malik Monk also coming up clutch.
And Steph does what he always does…misses the game-winner. Awesome to see Draymond get a tech in a 1-point loss too.
Easily the most fun win of the year. Really good defense

Charlotte would trade Melo for Hali in a heartbeat.
Minny and San Antonio only teams that didn’t wouldn’t ask for a redo and take Hali in the 2020 draft. San Antonio is only because they’d have been too good with him to end up with Wemby. (Vassel is very good though).

They are both good and interesting: LaMelo a much better watch / draw, so there’s a business side to it. If LaMelo wasn’t glass I don’t think they’d do it. LaMelo being what he is you’d take the extra production
This is silly. Winning is the biggest draw and Hali is an order of magnitude better at it. Plus he’s a culture setter. Charlotte’s culture is garbage. I mean Hali’s in elite company in the NBA in assist rate and True Shooting.
People are just sleeping on how good Hali is. He’s a top 15 player RN. Maybe higher.
He’s great this year and has always been good. It’s still not a no brainer.
Would slow down on the “culture setter / better at winning” – Charlotte is awful awful now and Hali is off to an amazing start.
But skepticism is warranted and health matters. don’t think a Hali team has cracked 35 wins either in Sacto or Indy, and when LaMelo played a full season the Hornets had a winning record.
And low key I suspect Indy is mid. Same winning percentage as us, buttressed by two low quality wins over a depleted Cavs team.
Top 15 player is a bit of a stretch. Maybe during the first 15 games of the season. Let’s see where the Pacers are at at seasons end. Top 15 players typically get their teams in the playoffs.

Evan bringing the ball down with an advantage is scary hours. Still a little pass-happy but can drive, give and go, set up on the offensive glass, spray out to a shooter…he had a sick pass to a sprinting JA the other game on the break.
Our bigs being quick, running and passing well, are really hard to guard, especially by lummox 5s.
