Live Thread: Cavs vs Bulls
2024-01-15Bounjour! It’s been a quiet around here, other than a Cavs’ convincing win over the Nets in Paris that started at two in the afternoon (EST). But that sweet victory was sandwiched inside a week of travel. The Cavs haven’t had a U. S. game in eight days as they return to the RMF to host the Bulls tonight.
For Chicago, Torrey Craig and Julian Phillips are out, while Patrick Williams is questionable. The 19-22 Bulls are 5-5 in their last ten and absolutely look like the league’s biggest water treaders. They have a team of solid role players, and no stars, and not a ton of shooting.the Cavs beat them before Christmas and will beat them again tonight.
For Cleveland, another grind out victory would be ideql. Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Ty Jerome remain out, Isaiah Mobley is with the Charge, and despite knee soreness that limited him to seven minutes in Paris, Max Strus is expected to start tonight.
The DG-less and Evan-less Cavs have played very well in their absence, going 9-3 since the mid-December bad news. Jarrett Allen has been putting up 19/13/4 averages with 2.4 stocks in that stretch: DPOY numbers. The team’s shooting volume and rebounding have been the keys to beating not just scrub teams, but also to notching quality wins against Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, and Brooklyn. This is a winnable game on the front end of a difficult week, with three of their next five against the Bucks. Let’s hope the good guys take care of business.

If Siakam bolts in FA, then it is a fiasco. Otherwise, good deal for Indy. Giving Carlisle pieces to play with is dangerous for the East. He is one of the best in the business.

Siakam doesn’t move the needle much for the Pacers in the regular season (they were already scoring plenty of points, and he’s just an OK defender). But he can get you iso buckets in the playoffs if his head’s right, which an extension will probably ensure.

Upshot is: NBA teams are required to carry 14 players and can only be under 14 for 2 weeks. We dropped to 13 when Rubio was bought out Jan 4th. We have to add someone by end of day Thur.
Porter is the mist strightforward option. They have him as being active for 36 games (14 to go). Also mention former first rounders Jarret Culver (Rio Grande G league) and Zhaire Smith (Charge).

I’m ok with however it shakes: prefer something close to .500 but variance is a thing. We have found some really nice bench lineups that work.
I expect to take a step back integrating DG and Mobley if only bc they have been imo really indecisive all year in spots. (that said if they come out aggressive I’ll eat my words but they really overpass and overthink)

I just looked it up. The language is 50 games on the active roster. End of debate.
Furthermore, I see language about if a team does not carry a full 15 man roster (we don’t), then the 3 2-ways can only be active for 90 games combined when the team has under 15 signed.

Got you. Yeah I assumed it was active roster but don’t know where that’s listed. I’m a caveman and just check my Yahoo sports app (lol) for tracking simple stats, and saw he had 25 GP.

it is kind of a mid season measuring stick. the expectation is slightly less than 1 win. if the Cavs get swept, not so good. one win would be OK. two or three would be fine.
Go Cavs! Team is super fun right now. Going to be interesting to see how we stack up against MIL—3 out of the next 5. And even more interesting to see the rotation once fully healthy

All they had to do was keep Baker for a year,draft c j ,save all that money and draft capital and avoid the bad karma.
I was in favor of keeping him to the end of his contract and hoping to get lucky in the draft. but it is a little hard to predict who will work out in the draft (see Mayfield, Baker).
That bad karma is gonna last at least as long as Watson’s contract….

Strus and Niang are really struggling. At least they are still pulling defenders out.
I don’t think we can get a stretch 4 without expending some trade capital but the Niang minutes are rough (and I thought he’d be able to be effective against the Bulls). Still, the lineups with Merrill / Strus / Niang at 2/3/4 should work with any playmaking guard and any big at 1 and 5.
At least we’re generating good looks. Hopefully we can keep cranking 3s with DG and Mobley back (and Strus’ looks will be more open)
Georges Niang goes -7 in a game that the Cavs won by 18. TT goes -14 for a -32 net rating. Woof.
Other than those two, great game. TBF, I didn’t think TT played that poorly. Niang dragged down everyone he played with in the second half.
