Live Thread: Cavs vs Nets
2024-03-10Happy “spring forward” day, Cav fans. Cleveland hosts the Brooklyn Nets tonight, and both teams are battling some injuries. For Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell, Max Strus, Evan Mobley, and Ty Jerome are out with injuries, and Dean Wade is out for personal reasons. For Brooklyn, Ben Simmons was declared out for the season last week as he seeks treatment for nerve impingement in his back. Questions are swirling on whether he’ll be able to play again. Cam Johnson is nursing an ankle sprain and Dariq Whitehead remains out.
The Cavs went 2-2 in the last week, which, given their injuries, is something of a miracle. Something between the Dean Wade explosion against Boston and a total grind-out win (and a bit of a gift from the officials and Rudy Gobert) versus Minny would do well for Cleveland tonight, but I’ll settle for a grind fest. The Nets have lost three of the last four, with the last couple coming against the Hornets and the Pistons. I imagine they want to get back on the win train, so the Cavs need to just stay competent.

I don’t sweat it because we are clearly being conservative with Max and DM. As we get back to health and consistency this month we will be ok short term and long term and our ceiling is great: Spida sees us beat Boston and Milwaukee and Denver and the Wolves and Clips…and he sees guys like Ice and Dean and JA and Sam level up…with more to come from DG and Evan…
My gut is a medium term extension that lets him get paid when the cap spikes with the new TV deal.

Yeah there’s a world where we figure out playoff physicality vs ORL or Indiana or Miami (who I think stinks and are medium talents) and leverage that to beat the Bucks in a strength in numbers type series. Another world where we get run by Philly or NY. My hope is that we basically stay the course and do not make reactionary moves on either course, like batching the developmental guys for a weird vet to win now or flipping DG for a medium talent wing. I think it’s just hard to play him with other bad defenders.
He’s generally not going to play against good offensive players either. He’s a little exposed by good scorers when he’s up higher in the rotation but most teams don’t have good bench scorers like that.
I am really excited by Sam long term and as a depth piece.
