2025-12-03The battle versus malaise continues on a cold Wednesday night in December as the Cavs host the Blazers. Lonzo Ball is back, but Allen, Merrill, Strus, and Nance are still out. For the Blazers, they’ve still not announced who’s playing and who’s out 20 minutes to tip.
Meanwhile, Kenny’s being dumb again and starting Hunter at the four with Garland and Mitchell. Who needs rebounding? Cavs by five in a game that’s closer than it should be. Go wine and gold.
Wow, Cavs fined $250,000 because “an investigation revealed that Garland was available to play” the second night of a back to back and did not. Did the league office actually watch him on court lately before rendering that verdict?

Tyson +3, Mobley +2, Tomlin +0, everyone else –
I would like to see the total (year long) +/-, and also something like total +/- per 36 min. This should be a pretty good indication of a players contributions. Tyson and Tomlin might be at the top.
Ball was -2, CPJ -4, which was fine, and I’m not putting any blame on Mitchell.
It’s the talent. I love what Tyson has done but he’s our third or fourth best player! We are gonna see Travers and Proctor minutes this weekend. We don’t have the worst problems in the league but I think we have the most in terms of how many and what they are. We are experiencing all kinds of adversity and when we solve for one another pops up. There’s just not enough offense there no matter how much energy you have. Hunter has to get himself going. The Cavs had really awful shot selection. Just too many one or no pass chucker threes with no action to make the defense expend energy or move side to side that at the very least creates offensive rebound opportunities on misses. Garland has to play his way back but Hunter’s lazy ass needs to go back to the bench and Tomlin or Wade need to start until Allen is back. Kenny coached a terrible game. The defense doesn’t need to adjust to anyone but Mitchell and occasionally Mobley or Garland. We just don’t have enough shot creation to weather a bad game from two starters.
Mobley quietly looks like a #2 option though. If he has someone to pass to and to pass to him, he’s 20/9 with six assists and six stocks while shooting good from 3 and elite defense.
Just gotta stay close in the standings until the winning streak starts.
Tomlin makes other teams have to adjust with his work in the o boards and his rim pressure, especially in transition. CPJ can get shots in the half court if they let him. Hunter should be a key component of the second unit iso game and not a starter. Garland needs to be in more P/R with a rim threat like Tomlin, Mobley, or Tyson. I’m not super convinced Tomlin and Tyson are consistent rim threats yet although they flash good finishes. They are awesome putting pressure on the offensive glass but teams are just blitzing the ball handler and living with Mobley or Tyson rolling.
But at least try it for a first action, it doesn’t hurt. I’d rather have Tomlin or Tyson dive and attempt something than a Lonzo or Wade chuck.
Honestly, “nobody takes transition 3s but Mitchell, Mobley or Garland” would work for me
I’d replace Mobley with Tyson. Mobley’s threes are much better with his feet set.

Agree offense not helping with defense. Quite a lot of it has been make or miss though, not really a play call.
Every word. For me, the fact that the Cavs fought their way back into the contest with a passing game that pressured the Blazer’s interior D, only to then cede those gains by taking multiple failed 3 pt attempts early in the shot clock was malpractice.
The Lonzo Ball 3 point chuck with 4 minutes to go (when they’d gotten to within 8) was a nail in the coffin.

With the personnel we have this week, best thing to do is to try and have Lonzo and Garland shoot their way out of their slumps. It…didn’t happen tonight but I liked the shot quality a lot. Lonzo and DG are clearly protecting themselves.
This reminds me of that one stretch in 23-24 where we were missing a million guys and trying to make do with Niang and Brobley starting.
I thought this was make or miss and some odd Kenny decisions.

It feels as if Kennys is scripting a scenario that keeps their seeding mid – play the low expectation, underdog role come playoff time so they can “shock” the world and re-write the narrative?? Just don’t think the “soft” narrative can be eliminated when you are getting 64 minutes combined from DG and DH.
